    I like hacking on legal code that I can proudly stick my name on and collaborate with others on openly.

    Yes, there have been some clever hacks written in little IRC channels somewhere, but you aren't going to get another Apache from said folks.


    Well, jsut because the law says it's illegal doesn't mean it is. There have been plenty of wrongful decisions in our courts, and it's up to us as a whole whether or not to acknowledge them.

    I mean, you can still collaborate openly. There's IM, private CVS servers, so on so forth - you could even set up your own private forum that only allows access to project contributors.

    From there on, release the code and the binaries over p2p. ...or whatever method the devs come up with. It's not hard at all to decentralize the code so the project lives on.

    And the "just ignore the law" argument generally isn't a good long-term solution.

    Depends. For anti-piracy related matters (open source software, especially), it's okay to ignore it because they can't do much.. plus the law is often misused and manipulated, so it gives you the justification to do so.

    WinFS is nothing new and isn't even exclusive to Vista considering you will be able to use it for XP.

    Hell, you can write a third party app to do the same thing. What do you think Google desktop will become?

    The article is comparing OPERATING SYSTEMS, not add on utilities for file systems. ...which is why the article is completely useless.

    Just because it's something you don't agree with doesn't mean it should be censored.

    Someone's "lie" could actually be the truth, but sometimes people are too bullheaded and sheepish to pay it any thought.

    You might consider someone a troll, but they could actually be saying something insightful that others are too ignorant to pick up on (happens here on /. all the time).

    Just because one person, or a group of people labels something doesn't mean that's what it is.

    It's not a "problem" of the internet - the problem is with people like that can't tolerate the fact that other people's thought or ideas that are out of the ordinary might not be exactly in tune to what they believe.

    Reading is not an inconvenience. It's the morons who are gullible enough to take what they read literally who are the problems.

    Libel, slander, and threaten someone all you want, but if people are honestly dumb enough to blindly follow it without researching, then that's THEIR problem.

    So yeah, one of my past employers can say I got fired and lie all they want, but if the current company hiring me actually believes it, they are just as at fault.

    Here's a hint: when you write an article comparing operating systems, don't compare useless shit like FILE SEARCHING.

    It's boring and provides no insight to the OS itself. Really now, how often do you use windows file search to locate something?

    Why do people act like this is an essential thing to have? I know the old windows file searching is slow, but if you're releasing a new OS, focus on something more useful and relevant, like system stability, or these mysterious "new features" that Microsoft is claiming to have made.

    So far the only new "feature" is the skin, which really doesn't look all that great... oh, and the improved file searching (big whoop).

    What I want to know is: what's so good about Vista? Why does Microsoft claim that Vista is the next big thing on par with going from 3.1 to 95?

    Oh, DRM so media companies can insure that others don't pirate their stuff? That affects me HOW, exactly?

    So far I've heard a lot of talk, but nothing to back it up with.

    Please, if I shed a tear at every sad event that took place in this world, I'd be a depressed individual. It's not that I'm insensitive or arrogant, I just don't see the need to get worked up about something that people could avoid.

    And Gas... has nothing to do with this.

    It doesn't surprise me that people are stupid enough to honestly accept "hurricane" as an excuse for why prices are still $1.50 over what they SHOULD be.

    Hell, might as well raise it to $5 because all the sheep in this country STILL won't question it and will have no probs grabbing their ankles.

    But that's offtopic.. ANYWAY..

    Put myself in their shoes? Hah. You couldn't PAY ME to live anywhere along the southern coast. If I was in their shoes, I would pack the family up and move elsewhere, because it's not worth risking completely losing everything you own.

    Jobs are everywhere, so the "they can't afford it" thing is just an excuse - anyone can move anywhere at any time, you just need ambition and the motivation to get off your ass and do it.

    The point of my original post is - you play with fire, you're gonna get burned. I know all about the geography and the industries down there, and I never said in my original post that I didn't. Just like people who make their living on the fishing boats... yeah it's sad when some of the crew never comes back home, but hey, they knew the dangers before making their choice.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm not LAUGHING at them, I just don't understand how people are so shocked and surprised that this could happen.. or people that ask, "why why why". Because you live in a very bad location, that's why.

    Wrong.

    1. Earthquakes, contrary to popular belief, aren't all that destructive. They CAN be, but most important structures (homes, freeways, skyscrapers even) are now build and are reinforced to withstand them. Big destructive ones are few and far between.

    2. Volcanic.. again, eruptions are few and far between, but they only affect a small radius around them.

    3. Tornadoes, frequent, but are very isolated.

    Hurricanes cover MASSIVE area, almost the size of an entire state, and you are guaranteed one or two WEVERY year resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in damage, if not more.

    All other "common" natural disasters pale in comparison.

    Seriously, I just don't get why these people don't learn. A lot of people right now probably feel like they should feel sorry for them, but these people made a conscious choice to live there knowing full well the consequences.

    Year after year they get smacked with hurricanes, sometimes on multiple occasions, yet the common sense to get the hell outta there eludes them. Never once do they think, "Gee, maybe we shouldn't live here since there are HURRICANES EVERY SINGLE YEAR."

    This isn't something random, like a tsunami. This is something that repeats itself year after year after year. I mean, it's so frequent they have cute lil names for them that go in alphabetical order.

    If you're gonna sit and play in the freeway, don't act all surprised if your ass gets hit by a car.

    Something like this happens and people are all shocked and surprised and "devastated". Look at how much money is gonna be wasted fixing this city when in another few years the same exact thing will happen again.

    Thousands upon thousands of homes destroyed... imagine what these people cough up for insurance. They need to take this chance to use their insurance money to get the hell outta there and consider it a tough lesson learned.

    Anywhere but there...

    Many people might think "well all the people in California are pretty stupid too," but earthquakes actually aren't all that bad. The destruction you hear about are often in major structures not properly set up to deal with them - and most homes are just fine. I've been through MANY earthquakes, and as long as you do some proper arranging of things (ie not setting expensive stuff near edges of shelves), you'll be fine.

    The thing is when people drink coffee, they do crazy things like drink a pot a day. Not very good for your blood pressure or your stomach.

    I think reports like this are very misleading... just like the "wine is good for you!" So yeah, many people will justify drinking an entire bottle.

    Drink a lot of coffee and... you're wired.

    Stick with green tea if you want the benefits of antioxidants - coffee is too harsh.

    ...the sad thing is people won't think twice. They'll see "oh it's only $1.50", but they'll ignore the fact it's a 50% MARKUP.

    Ah well, at least things like iTunes diverts attention away from piracy for once. I still prefer newsgroups as the source for my music.

    ...and it's probably been said before, but it needs better hardware detection, support, and auto-configuration.

    I've been using linux as a desktop off and on for a few years now and the major headache for me has always been getting the hardware to work properly.

    I have a compaq laptop and I couldn't get pcmcia to work for the LONGEST time. It'd simply lock up. Common sense tells us that it's a resource conflict (average user won't know that, btw).

    So great, how do I fix it? To this day I would've been stuck had it not been for a friend of mine that found a config.opts from a linux guru that toyed with the "include memory" lines in the PCMCIA's config.opts file.

    You kidding me? The average user won't know how to do that. Hell, I know what I'm doing and I don't even understand exactly what changes were made to get it to work.

    Then again, my other laptop (also a compaq, diff model) hasn't had a single issue with linux.

    While the thought of having a compaq laptop in itself is problematic, you have to realize that people have HPs and Dells.

    How about your common things, like PCI Linksys wireless cards? Needs ndiswrapper, which... needs driver and inf files to run. People don't know that.

    Yes, perhaps they need to RTFM, but that in itself is an issue. Average users aren't gonna spend days on google trying to figure out why their stuff isn't working.

    You have to realize that most people are stupid.

    You and I know that DRM is bad, but most people are ignorant and don't care. They will accept whatever is fed to them.

    Believe it or not, the problem isn't Microsoft. It's people in general. They are consumers. If people were truly smart enough, DRM wouldn't exist.

    But it does. Why? Because most people are trained to not have a desire to know or care about what it is or what it does (like most things in life, especially lawmaking).

    Hahaha.. bad analogy. People don't die or lose their HOUSES because of a computer virus. You can lose files, sure, but if it wasn't backed up, then it's obviously not important.

    Anyway...

    As for why I think it's great: people are stupid and naive. The general population needs a good slap in the face to wake up to this shit because they obviously haven't learned their lesson from Code Red, MSBlaster, or any of the other plethora of viruses/worms that have been glorified in the media over the past few years.

    I'm just curious as to why virus/worm authors aren't more destructive with their code. I would be. I think it would make a bigger impact and force people to learn their lesson.

    Then again, these worm authors weren't very intelligent. It's damn near impossible to get tracked as the source of a worm unless you were fuckin obvious about sending it out.

    Not only that, but we live in an age where naive goons buy up wireless technology and don't even bother to secure the damn things. Unleash it over those networks and you'll never get caught.

    No, Metroid Prime is great. One of my fav games.

    The gimmick lies in the "hey, if you buy a GBA you get to play as samus with a colorful suit" and vice versa: "Hey, you can play the original metroid!"

    Why not just unlock it so everyone can do it? What does a GBA have to do with either one? It's not a "bonus".

    That is what a gimmick is, and that is the point of this article: Nintendo is notorious for it in recent years.

    As stated in another post of mine, the UMD is ridiculous. I hate it and everything it tries to be.

    However, Sony has been innovative: PS2 allowed for widespread DVD usage - not only was the console a kickass next-gen system, it was also a DVD player, something that most people didn't have at the time (2000).

    You need to think of the future - what you will get are N64 equivalent games and PORTS that you have played before as opposed to current hits, such as THUG2, Sims 2, or any other hot selling PS2 title that they wanna push over to portable.

    Have you played the Metroid Prime: Hunters demo? I mean... it's ugly. It's a BAD port.. just like THPS was to GBA. Some things just DON'T work, and that's one of em.

    You're right - the PSP doesn't have many hits just yet, but take a peek at releases that are just around the corner (at IGN for example..)

    Many of the PSP games coming out are not only unique titles (GTA: Liberty City Stories), but are ports of RECENT games - The Sims2, Jak & Daxter, THUG2, and others that are SPOT ON.

    DS? Nintendogs... Mario 64... and other ports of recent games that look horribly N64ish (also Sims 2).

    Final Fantasy III is seeing light with DS, and I'll give it that...

    However, while my first post may seem trollish, the DS doesn't provide much for your dollar. The games may be fun in a kiddie sort of way, but it's just too far behind with what it CAN provide in the future. You're paying not only for old technology (Mario 64), but dumbed down NEWER technology.

    They are more or less extending the N64 and hoping to make some unique titles for it that will catch on... but I can promise you it won't happen.

    The UMD thing IS pretty stupid though, I agree.

    DS is old technology. It's a portable N64 going for $150. WTF?

    For $100 more, you can have a portable PS2. THINK ABOUT IT for just a minute. When you compare dollar by dollar to the technology you're paying for, you are paying too much for the DS.

    Which is the better deal... hmmm...

    DS has the stylus, and while many might think otherwise for a second, it IS a gimmick. Oh, it's not, you say?

    PLEASE tell me how it's not. I will admittedly shut my mouth and admit fault if you can tell me how the stylus and dual screens alone are "innovative" as opposed to the "wow" gimmick factor. I challenge you.

    Nintendo in recent years has been notorious for gimmicks. An immediate one off the top of my head was... Metroid Prime. Anyone, anyone? Oooh, plug your GBA in with Metroid Fusion and play with SPECIAL SAMUS!!! *cream* Hah.

    What about the Final Fantasy chronicles? Plug your GBA in, get special stuff that other people cannot. Oooh.

    What about paying for Mario all over again just because it's portable? or $20 for the "classics" series - The Legend of Zelda. Hah. That shit should come on ONE disc with 20 other games for $20.

    C'mon.. where are the supposed hit games? Mario 64? Yeah, I played that 9 years ago. Give me something new.

    Nintendo needs to get their shit together.

    I thought Code Red was amazing.

    It's truly funny how many people are fucking lazy and naive enough to NOT update their systems after many many years of hearing about viruses.

    I mean really, you gotta be pretty fuckin dumb to not know about keeping your system up to date, or at least acknowledge that viruses exist.

    When the worms hit, people flip.

    It's even better when big companies get hit because they're the ones pumping shitloads of money into supposed "experienced" network admins.. and what happens? Shit hits the fan.

    I love it.

    These lawsuits should be thrown out.

    We've seen this before with the lawsuits that took place against companies who developed p2p networks because the plantiffs had a misconception that the developers knowingly allowed this material on their "network".

    They just want someone to blame as an easy way to get money. Google has lots of it, so their next logical step is to blame them.

    Google is not responsible. They are merely a search index. You know this, I know this, but the technologically illeterate morons we have for judges don't see this.

    Instead they see in black and white, and without knowing the truth about how the technology works and who's to blame/not to blame, they blindly dish out decisions - and a lot of times they aren't in favor with real justice.

    I wonder if they could countersue for these companies trying to manipulate the system.

    No no no no no... you got it all wrong, and I think I understand your past posts now.

    The lortab DID relieve the pain, it just wore off quicker than the 4-6 hour period.. so when I needed more and ultimately ran out, the pharmacy (despite DIRECT orders from my doc) refused the refill mentioning that lortab/vicodin are controlled and I could only get so much in a 3 day period.

    I TOLD my doctor that it wasn't doing the job and that I have to take it 2-3 hours because of how fast it wears off. He said that's not a problem and proceeded to issue me a refill (in fact, he gave me 4 refills because of the severity of the surgery).

    People DO have different tolerances to medication, and I'm one of those people. I was on morphine when I had the second operation (due to complications in healing) and even THAT hardly had any effect on the pain.

    During the "downtimes" when the pharmacy would refuse to refill the medication for up to 24 hours (again, despite my doc calling in the refill) - I simply went elsewhere for the dosage needed to get rid of the pain. It just wasn't through a pharmacy.

    Technically if you want to interpet the law word for word, yes, what I did was illegal... but I operate off common sense. My comfort and well being comes first before anything else, and if that means being in severe pain and going to someone that can relieve it outside of a pharmacy, so be it.

    There is no "self-medicating" or abuse of any kind going on. I'm just a perfect example of how our laws, designed to "protect" us, can backfire on us because they are overly protective for no good reason.

    I'm in no way shape or form saying, "let's welcome abuse." That's the common response when talking about drugs - people assume drug uses are abusers with certain "problems". I'm saying if people want to USE, let them.

    You could be just as easily in the wrong from drinking alcohol (but that substance is okay because govt says it's legal, right?)

    This leads me to the process of thinking that maybe it's just not right for others to be telling people what they can and cannot put into their own bodies. ...which brings us back to the topic of the article: this man gets arrested for writing scripts. A drug dealer of sorts.

    I personally believe it's ridiculous to punish people for delivery of substances for others to use in their own body off their own free will.

    Yet the first thing you say was, "...burn..." along with commentary about people seeking drugs and how this is supposedly problematic for you.

    Just because something is available doesn't mean everyone will splurge and become fiends - that thought is flawed to the core as well as the arguments of "I don't want my tax dollars supporting blah blah blah", yet.. in reality, their tax dollars are supporting much worse causes than helping addicts.
