That's 1,600,000 people donating $50 a piece. Not impossible.
Now, lets assume that some nerds with cash will jump in, and the studios say they'll chip in because of the overwelming fan support. So, they chip in $20,000,000.
That gets it down to $50 for 1,200,000 fans.
I don't think it'll happen, and I don't think this is the best spending of that kind of money and effort. But It's possible.
back in the late 90's I worked at a body shop as a side job for a while. We got in a Dodge viper a guy had curbed.
I was tasked with the job of locating and pricing the suspension parts we needed for this and another project, a small dodge pickup.
Well, long story short.
I found that the part numbers on the lower control arm on the truck and the viper were the same. But the Viper part cost $900, and the truck part cost $300.
I was shocked, but I'm not surprised that electronics dealers would do the same thing on stuff.
It's not that franchises suck. When they are good, they are great. The only thing better than one good movie, is several.
But when then whole suffers, because of a string of poor copies (Star Trek, Star wars, reality shows, Home improvement shows) then you get, instead of a single thing you like well enough, you get a barage of crap copies and half efforts.
Our views on even our own planets and physiology, how is it you think we can make such a determination yet?
Just because we think it's dead, doesn't mean it's dead. It might just mean we don't have the technology and understanding yet to see the sort of life there, or get to where it is.
Researching a planet is one thing. Completely screwing with the entire planet is another.
I believe we've completely slacked off at undersea explorations, as a species. So, when scientists find new cool stuff like this, the first thing I think is "You know, this is probably just the shallow end of the pool too, I wish they'd explore more." You never know what secrets to life are out waiting for us in the oceans.
Of course, if we explore it, it'll likely become safer and much easier for the world to exploit and ruin the oceans.
yes, fonts have been a long time gripe for me as well. I end up running a lower res than I'd like, or just guessing what text says. making me unpopular on IRC.:)
I think they should use the distributed.net client for benchamarking. maybe they can take a few decades off of the RC5-72 challenge, or finish up OGR.:)
Smart power, not more power? How unamerican!
TERRORIST!
I'm sad to say, I don't think it'd make the list.
An awesome game, I loved it. But it wasn't really super creative.
Why should Joe Average - who uses Longhorn - switch to Firefox when he already has a 'super cool browser' right on his desktop?
The only way I see people dumping IE on Longhorn, would be if they already used to and loved Firefox.
So, if Firefox is to combat IE on Longhorn, they will have to push and take as much of the marketplace as they can before Longhorn hits the market.
Then, the users, who are creatures of habit, will download Firefox the moment they get that long horn system on the INTARWEB.
But, thatd still be a lossy transition.
That's a lot of dough. But, not unreachable.
Lets say we're aiming for $80,000,000.00

YIKES!
That'd be a losing situation.
Either the sound quality would be REALLY poor, or it'd drop like mad.
BAH! This is what I'm talking about!
Fake reality for real people who's real relity isn't really interesting!
:/
On that note, I must say that my girlfriend a serious Sims adict.
I fear that the average user will think that the way AOL impliments VoIP and Desktop serching, is as good as it gets.
I fear AOL won't do a great job (suprise!) and people will think "VoIP sucks! I tried it with AOL and it never worked right!"
Then, they might shy away from other VoIP services that are great.

distributed.net is where all the smart CPU cycles have gone! :)
It'll run 360 days, and then it'll die. This will force you to go get a new one with updated DRM. :)
I don't think this is something that can be chanced. I suggest buying these computers by the rack!
But honey, they're to heat the house!
Well, now with two cores that are near half as efficient, I think they are just about to catch up. :)

Yeah, down already. Almost too quick to have been the slashdot mob. I guess I'll jsut have to come back in a week when the traffic twindles.
Read up, kid.
I read it as such as well.
Talk about a few moments of terror and confusion.

Boy, now I'm all sad n'stuff.

yeah, I love screen shots. But these aren't so great. Possibly to a more trained eye, but not mine.
No, as long as he gives up fellow hackers, he'll go free. :)
What, you expect someone to responsibility for thier own actions? Hmm, I think you're asking a little much, aren't you? :P
I don't know what you're talking about.
Me: WTF Mate?
Alaska can come too.
