Just for kicks, really, in principle I don't really disagree:
Part 1:
1. WebMail is *really* slow compared to PINE
Absolute speed is important to a fairly small number of users.
2. FireFox with a webmail system in it takes up many times the screen space
And windowing systems essentially make that complaint obsolete. Unless you weren't aware that resizing, overlapping, and hiding windows are basic features in nearly all windowing systems.
3. I don't especially want to trust a third party with my private data
Best not let your email get routed over the Internet, then. In general, however, this is the killer feature of hosting your own mail.
4. I don't want my mail to be inaccessible when some 3rd party web mail server goes tits-up
How many people want to run their own high availability email server?
5. If I run my own MTA I can do some useful automated stuff with things like procmail
You've got one there, but like the absolute speed, it's an edge case.
6. I happen to like the interface
Totally subjective, and definitely not generally applicable.
and Part 2
1. Offline access to your mail (not everyone has an 'always on connection'
Gmail for one allows this with no hassles.
2. Sync with your PDA/Phone/Mobile computing device
Same as above. The IMAP works beautifully.
3. Good mail filtering (gmail's search and tags are okay, but they're not like real filtering)
Filtering beyond what Gmail offers is again an edge case.
4. Extra spam protection above and beyond what gmail offers
Considering the abilities conferred to Gmail's spam filtering through the massive aggregation of email they have available, and considering Gmail's excellent track record, I don't see what more would need to be done.
5. Better handling of attachments
You have one there.
6. Pine/Alpine, unlike GUI clients, will work well on a console. (What do you do if X keeps crashing and you need to e-mail someone to get help?)
It's fairly obvious in this day and age that console access is, once again, an edge case.
7. Works over ssh/telnet
HTTP can be routed over SSH, so basically, webmail works just fine. Telnet is kind of a joke.
Mac users have no real reason to know the system password for everyday use
Sure they do, they generally have to administer their own box.
There could be a few bucks in doing a remote admin service for home users who have neither the skills nor the inclination to use them. I'd google to see if someone does that already, but I'm feeling lazy.
Not that it's as politically astute, but "Gored" would sound much better. Unfortunately that can only be applied in cases of extreme hypocrisy, like flying around in a jet to tell people to stop producing so much CO2.
No, just a garden variety crazy person. These posts have been coming for years. They've never made any sense. They're full of clever misspellings. They tend to revolve around the extreme left-wing topics.
I like em, personally. Slashdot wouldn't be the same without the crap at -1. It's a shame the self-appointed intelligentsia won't read it more often.
What do you think the realistic alternative is, exactly? If someone is raping a girl in an alley behind a dumpster, should reporting that be illegal? Obviously he wanted privacy while committing his crime, so who am I to breach the privacy?
If you create a situation (like inviting a person into your house) where someone can stumble upon (or even search for and find) evidence that you've committed a crime, it's not the fault of the person who found the evidence. Doesn't matter if it's in your house or in the middle of a rush hour freeway.
You're aware that they do test the substance, right? You won't be charged with anything if it's sugar. Not that that was your point - apologies for letting the facts get in the way of your defense of criminals.
I'm tired of hearing people talk about how Galaxy is nothing new when they obviously haven't played it. But please, tell me more about how it's just Sonic. I enjoy a good laugh at the expense of the stupid.
Of course, that isn't likely to happen now, but why bother letting that influence anything when it's so much easier to just impose your beliefs on people in the name of "good."
(Yes, cute use of the word evil, too. I applaud hyperbole in all its forms.)
Are you positing that there is proof for the nonexistence of god? Or were you going at something more specific? It sorta reads like you were only talking about the 6,000 year old Earth people, but then you seem to paint all religions with the brush of insanity.
I suppose you're looking for some good old fashioned "it's not fair" type sympathy. Too bad. It languishes. It dies on the vine. In the long wrong, no one cares.
If the candidates are nearly equal in all other respects, but one dresses like an unsocialized 14 year old and one dresses like an adult, that is a quantifiable difference that generally reveals something about personality. It shows that the person cares what other people think, at the very least in situations where it might matter. It shows that the person isn't dismissive or disrespectful of those around him as a matter of course. It's a very good indicator to use.
Pretty much every definition of life I've ever seen included reproduction. I don't recall ever seeing tractors and airplanes reproduce. Software is only virtual anyway, and the arguments aren't very interesting unless one is in the mood to get very abstract. Do you have any more bad examples?
Or maybe, just maybe, off-topic ranting based on an incorrect premise (you did notice the article pretty much refutes the summary, right?) isn't going to be popular. Who knows?
Doesn't matter how violated you feel by someone saying something to you. If you physically assault them, no, you aren't a vigilante hero. You're a criminal.
The police have no power to sentence. Their threats are empty. Your ignorance has no been resolved.

Yes, yes, mod me down. I don't mind, really.

In this particular case, the chances of an extinction event were pretty damned high.

Could I get some clarification?
Well that's convenient. I'll stick with Firefox asking me, just like I like it.
I would hope not. The OS on its own isn't really doing any useful or interesting work.
I'm going to need the definition of interoperability that includes breaking huge amounts of existing pages.

Cute. I'll make a mental note that you're a scumbag with fucked up priorities and move on.
You prefer throwing the controller in the trash to replacing the batteries? Interesting...
It's a pretty long trip to blaming the gov't for this. Thank you for restoring my faith in crazy.
I can't seem to find anything showing the PS3 having any market "locked up." What are your sources?
Or maybe, just maybe, off-topic ranting based on an incorrect premise (you did notice the article pretty much refutes the summary, right?) isn't going to be popular. Who knows?
Relax a little. There's nothing wrong with it, you just don't want to see it. You're free to ignore it.
