Tell them they're getting a mandatory system upgrade, then put them in Kiosk mode, give them access to email, whatever office apps they have, and whatever other critical functions they need. If they ask for more, tell them it's been obsoleted. After all, they've got tenure, they're smart, right?

  3. Personally, I think on How to Fix U.S. Patents · · Score: 2, Insightful

that patents ought to have a sunset provision, kind of a use-it or lose-it. Something along the lines of patents holding for 6 or 8 years, with a mandatory renewal at the end, and every two years after that. If the renewal is not optioned, an expiration notice is sent, with a 180 day grace period for renewal, and revocation afterwards. This will weed out a lot of dead wood in the patent world, and make the patenter's clearing house firms that make a killing on buying up old patents do more work to keep the system in check.

  4. tied at the feet and the hands... on ITunes Overcharging in the UK · · Score: 0

after dealing with labels, and coming out with a pricing scheme that matches as closely to the 99 cent across the board pricing as they're able to negotiate, they're investigated for price fixing. I notice after seeing this picked up in other places, that nobody has mentioned a word of the record labels forcing pricing schemes on Apple. Apple makes just shy of squat on the tracks, and having a universal price marketing ploy makes more sense than picking up a couple extra pennies a track in the UK. Methinks this stinks of someone looking in the wrong place for an answer.

Where did I say I used Napster to steal music? I have 25gb worth of music ripped directly of of CDs I own. Doesn't mean I've never seen Napster used. I've held guns before too, does that make me a murderer?

When does changing an approach or whatever you want it to be called become selling out? How far do you have to justify it to yourself before it becomes repulsive to you? To me, I refuse to set the bar ever higher, once is enough for me.

  8. Re:hasn't someone... on Shawn Fanning Is Back Into Digital Music · · Score: 0
I doubt that you'd do otherwise. Boy how you'd get that one wrong if you'd put money on it. I'm an extremely principled person, and I don't sell out if it compromises my principles. If it's something I'm against doing, no price is enough for me. Not that you'll think I'm honest, but thats' you. And I recall how huge Napster was at the time, because I was there too. But keep in mind he DID straddle both sides of the fence, because at the same time he was trying to work with the labels, his company was suing them for illegally using their market position as a monopoly to drive upstarts out of business.

So far as pop culture goes, when a remake of a movie (which is a product placement for the new mini) becomes pop culture poking fun at pop culture, is when I say Enough. Everyone else is so content to let crap like this slide because it's no big deal, that they let the whole shebang slide down the drain. I'm an angry bastard about things like this because nobody else will be.

  9. hasn't someone... on Shawn Fanning Is Back Into Digital Music · · Score: 0

recalled his 15 minutes of fame yet? From the whole "napster" thing, to the nonsense in The Italian Job, I'm kind of sick of hearing about it. I really hope they aren't trying to capitalize on his name in order to sell music, it would seem like a shame to pimp yourself out to both sides of the fence like that.

I totally agree with you, but I think we should also not publish the names of the convicted, as we may offend their delicate sensibilities. Oh, and all criminal records must be expunged upon finishing the sentence for your crime, so that it doesn't hang over your head for the rest of your life. In fact, let's use secret code for criminal charges, so nobody will even know what crimes a person is accused of. We want these people to be able to walk proud amongst us, not as a possible danger to society, but instead as heros for pointing out potential weak spots in our social rhetoric. And for all you pukes out there, that's spelled h-u-m-o-r. And it was sarcastic. Look it up.
