A real intelligent business, who maybe didn't have the manpower or expertise to update their site regularly, would NOT put up a menu, especially not with prices on it. Perhaps just take a few pictures of their food (especially the stuff that has been sold for years and probably isn't going to stop (like a cheeseburger)), the establishment, a cute waitress smiling as she pours a cup of coffee, etc, etc. Try to distance yourself from prices, at the absolute least. And if you're going to post a list of food that you sale, make sure you a: don't list a price and b: state that the menu can change at any time.
Putting prices on a menu - any menu; whether on a billboard outside the store, or a website, or even on the physical menus the hostess hands you when you come in is a statement of fact. These are all things that are easily updateable and you are bound to keep them that way. If you can't update your website, or your billboard, or god forbid, your physical menus, then you shouldn't have them. Any of them. Failure to update them is akin to telling me the shirt in my hand is 39.99, but when you ring it up 5 minutes later, it's 59.99. It's a form of fraud and flat out wrong.
You miss my point entirely. If you're going to say "Free Speach", it better be free. If it isn't, don't say it. If we're free in america, say we're free. Since we aren't, don't say we are. That's my point. Rationally, logically, and realistically, we need these safeguards (to some degree). But, please, if you're going to implement them, at least stop saying the situation is contrary to what it actually is. We aren't the land of the free. Nowhere is. Stop the lies and propaganda and accept the truth. That's the minimum that I ask. Sure, I'd like my cake and to eat it too, but that isn't how the world works. But I will settle for a little honesty.
Moving off topic even further; I disagree with these limitations. I understand I'm very much so in the minority, and, I recognize that I'm being an idealist, but it really bothers me.
I suppose I wouldn't even really care but for the fact that this "Freedom of Speech" is touted so highly, first in our schools, and then in our society. The truth is, we don't have it. If they didn't ACT like we had it, I wouldn't mind nearly as much. This applies to everything, I suppose, as we are, at least in name, the "land of the free". Funny how many restrictions we have, being the land of the free. Realistically, I know they're necessary, but, by definition, if we're restricted, we're not free. If people didn't act like we were, I wouldn't care, but the fact that people recite this blatantly false liturgy as if it were the truth really, really bothers me.
But I digress, and don't really add anything to this conversation other than my dismay. Feel free to mod me off topic./salute
I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I wanted to point out one simple thing: sometimes you have to break one law to unveil illegal activities elsewhere. For example; what if a Microsoft employee anonymously informed someone that GPL'd software was being added to a MS software product, without GPLing the product. He's broken his NDA contract, but he's also exposed his own company's missteps. How apt would he be to do such if he knew he would be "outted" and taken to court for breaking his NDA? Or at the least losing his job?
Again, I don't disagree with you, but I think there are certain situations where shield laws and anonymous tipsters (is that even a word?) SHOULD be allowed. And then, in other situations, probably not. But it's something we, as a society, need to discuss - or at least the people predisposed to discussing things should discuss. I doubt Cletus at the local watering hole is going to give a shit one way or the other.
We aren't necessarily limiting the scope of our discussion to the law, but rather, what it should be. The first post in this thread stated that this situation had no bearing what-so-ever on journalism or blogging. I claimed that one has to admit that it does. Not necessarily in the eyes of the law, but in application to our society, it most certainly does. I don't know if you noticed or not, but this is slashdot, where we are "normal" people, not lawyers. Perhaps in a lawyer forum, you could automatically assume the conversation is limited in scope to the law first, but, given the audience here, you should automatically assume the scope is "the real world" first, not "legal system" first.
Wrong again; these news sites/bloggers did NOT agree to any of these NDAs; as such, it STILL has to do with journalism and blogging, at the minimum, and protecting your secrets (which is the purpose of the NDA in the first place).
Wrong, it's about both. It doesn't have to be one or the other. It's obvious you think that protecting secrets is of more import than speech, but don't be so dishonest as to say "it has nothing to do with journalism or blogging".
I'm not saying you're wrong that protecting secrets is more important than free speech (and I'm also not saying you're right). I'm just saying "be honest about the situation or don't open your mouth". It's completely irresponsible of you to do otherwise.
This doesn't mean anything. The people still LOVE tax cuts. It's just that they also seem to like a truly-epic-in-proportions Government and they don't tend to mind being about 8 Trillion dollars in debt.
Note to Republicans: if you're going to cut taxes, how about you cut Government spending, first?
This last tax cut reminded me of quitting your job and buying everything with a credit card instead. I mean, uh, sure, you can do it, but eventually, you're going to get fucked.
Note to Democrats: Stop smiling. You're not much better.
Ah, but if only the market were broad enough. My choices are either Cable, dial-up, or copying information to a disk and sending it through the mail. If only we all had the options you have:(
Wow, flamebait already? How dare you make a point about an extremely biased opinion in the/. news! Burn, demon, burn!
I've yet to see anything good about a Mac. What Mac fans consider good, I consider "limiting". Mac users want a tool; I want a toy. If I wanted a tool, I'd buy a shovel.
Whoever said anything about multiple times? One time is enough. Are you saying people should never have sex unless they're ready to have kids? Yeah, that's going to fucking work. What next: "The War on Sex"? That's one of the only things that would have less success than "The War on Drugs". I suppose "The War on Breathing" would be even less productive, but not by a whole lot.
You can bitch all you want, but you're never going to stop two kids from banging their pelvis' together. Never. THAT is why it's pointless. You make sense rationally, but you forget that humans don't always follow rational patterns of thought; ESPECIALLY when it comes to the opposite sex.
The point is, many parents, between their two jobs trying to put clothes on their kids' backs, do not have the time to supervise them - OR take them to an art museum or library. A good parent is one who pays the bills, makes sure everyone has warm clothes, food in their bellies AND gets their homework done. But there's more to it than that. There is supervision, and when you're working an average of 11+ hours a day (two full time jobs spread out over 7 days), it's dreadfully hard to DO the supervising. Those are some big fucking windows of time where no parent is around.
I'm not saying that's your fault, or that you should have to pay for it. No. I shouldn't have to either. But you should at least fucking UNDERSTAND it. You should accept it as the the situation at hand, whether ludicrous or not. And maybe, just MAYBE we can come up with something beneficial that benefits us all; those who weren't morons and those who were (note past test; parents, in most cases, wisen up pretty goddam fast, but no matter how smart they are, there are STILL only 24 hours in a day).
And please. People do make mistakes all the time. And whether it's fair or not, they will affect you. Let's say your apartment building burns down because someone fell asleep with a cigarette: a mistake! But also one that affects you. Or someone crashes their car into yours. Or, hell, your girlfriend or wife cheats on you. Guess what? It's not fair. But it is life.
That's well and good after the fact, but what about now, after it's happened? Too fucking late to say "you shouldn't have them" after they're already running amok. Either promote taking children off parents and making them wards of the state OR accept it as the stark truth and stop making such completely useless and pointless statements.
What is there to know about Gates? That he gave $23 Billion dollars to charity? I'm pretty sure that matters a fuck of a lot more than inconvenience at having to deal with people using the buggy product of a monopoly. Do I like Microsoft's business practices? Hell no. Do I think Bill Gates is a pompous ass at times? Definitely. But I also deeply respect him for doing so much to help others. I can only hope that, if I had that much money, I would be caring enough to do the same, instead of purchasing my own island chain and setting up my own country.
That's why, when you go to an ATM and put your pin in, you could put the wrong in one and it isn't going to tell you until you actually make the withdrawal/deposit. It has to connect to whatever-the-hell-it-connects-to and send it the pin info account info and the request and if the pin is invalid, then it spits out your card and tells you you messed up.
I wonder if the information sent to whatever-the-hell-it-is is encrypted...:O

No one ever wants to die. But some ways are better to die than others.

Personally, I want to see these studies that show there is or isn't a link between real violence and shitty parenting.

Seems like about 50% of the time, you don't HAVE two parents. You have one. Again, not optimal, but still reality.
