It isn't MY argument. I don't even have kids. I'm illustrating the situation that many parents are presented with. I applaud the fact that you do do your job. Are your kids going to be pissed? Yeah. Probably. Kids get pissed about a lot of things. But beating the shit out of hookers with a baseball bat is not something most (if any) children should be playing.
Your point that it should not be legislated has merit. In fact, I don't think it should be legislated. However, what other alternatives are there? Are you going to begin going door to door to force busy/lazy parents to do their jobs? What are the other options?
Bullshit. Some parents are just too busy to do their jobs. I don't know that I can blame them; sometimes the situation dictates both parents working 50+ hour weeks just to pay bills and put food on the table. Sometimes they're just lazy. But when it comes down to it and it's little Jimmy's birthday and he wants to buy a video game with his spare money, you better bet that they'll end up cajoled into buying it.
It may make a few parents take note, but it will probably just irritate other parents who have to take the time to go buy the game themselves. Do you all - or even most - parents are going to pay attention?
Is it possible that he's merely referring to Red Hat's distribution of Linux? Maybe that's the only distribution he considers a real threat, eh? Maybe you should just relax and focus on the subtle nuances of the English language instead of running off into the sunset with your torches and pitchforks?
Or we can form a rabble, if you want. I'm always up for a good riot.
Somewhat off-topic, but related...and I feel like ranting.
I don't understand why people are freaking out about Tivo and other PVR/DVR systems. I'll be the first to admit, I'm a jerk about copyright infringement. Music, software, etc, etc. I've been getting a lot better now that I'm not a poor highschool or college student, but I DO have a bad track record.
With that said, however, never once did I even ponder the idea of either downloading OR uploading recorded TV shows. Why? Because they're already freely available. There is nothing I need to see THAT BADLY that I can't just tell SageTV to record the next time it pops up and go about my business. If I won't be able to see it for a year or so until they slide it into the re-runs, and I positively have to see it, I'll purchase the season (ala SG-1).
Why would I want to download a show recorded by someone else when I can get the exact same thing for myself without almost any effort? Aside from the fact that I may get a kick out of their crazy local commercials that may or may not appear on it, there's absolutely no reason for me to do this.
As for skipping advertisements, which I know is the real worry; keep things in perspective. Yes, I do fastforward through commercials (when I'm not too lazy to pick up the remote (now THAT is lazy!)). But even if I didn't have that option, you can bet your ass I would spin my chair around and turn some music on while muting the TV, or using the bathroom, or making a sandwich, or throwing socks at my cat in an effort to make him freak out. I don't feel like I'm anything unusual here; most people are the same way. Would I download a movie? Yes. Would I download a TV show? No. Could others? Yes. But I've been seeing avi's of The Simpsons floating around on my campus network since 2000. The more PVRs, the better, because now people aren't sharing, they're making these recordings themselves.
I'm sure there's a point in there somewhere. Or at least I hope so. If not, at least I may be able to start a discussion.:O
The problem is that 99.99% of the complaints are not in the form of constructive criticism. It's a barely cohesive mumbo jumbo with a lot of "ur" "2" "gay" "faget" and other bullshit. In the off chance the user has refrained from profanity AND put to use their 10th grade writing skills to use, they still manage to fail to offer any sort of constructive criticism. Constructive criticism requires two things; pointing out the flaws and offering possible solutions. Without the later, the entire concept of "constructive criticism" is moot (in this situation); it's not like Valve has a whole SLEW of better ideas just sitting there waiting for us to bitch enough before they implement them. Because that obviously makes sense. [/sarcasm]
Yes, people don't like to have to validate their game. I'm sure there are some people out there who also don't want to have to install the game before playing it, either. And probably even a few who don't even want to have to be forced to play the game; it should just play itself!
I realize those are unfair comparisons, but the bottom line is, Steam is the best thing Valve could have done, both for themselves, and, yes, the consumers. Now the patches are delivered right to my computer. I don't even have to bother looking for them. Could Valve have invested in a wee bit more bandwidth and a few more servers, at least for the launch and the Christmas season? Definitely! But it's not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. People, seriously; get a goddam grip. I wasn't thrilled when I had to wait 12 hours for the last 18% of my preload to finish (on a connection that usually gets about 300k/s), but that doesn't mean that Steam, the validation system, or Valve are the anti-Christ. Relax a bit, have a cookie, and go for a walk while you wait.
Besides, it's not as bad as waiting for a Gentoo installation to be finished.

Read the article, seriously. He's covered all the hospitals he's been to and doctors he's seen. He's not expecting some doctor to just prescribe him medicine; he's looking for a doctor who MAY have a clue as to what his illness might be. He's grasping at straws here, trying to find out what the problem is exactly (even if he thinks he has a good idea) and any subsequent treatments. In essence, this has gone on far too long and it's starting to get much, much worse, and every ER (there have been multiple visits to multiple hospitals) he's visited as well as multiple doctors have given conflicting diagnoses, with no treatment doing anything to help Patrick along. If you read the article, you get a much better picture of what he's asking for. Don't just assume he's asking for a script.
Did you even RTFA? He's been to the ER multiple times; no one is really taking into account the gravity of this issue every time he goes. The ER is a hectic place and it's pretty obvious this isn't a run-of-the-mill illness; continuing to go back is NOT going to suddenly make them wake up and do the research to figure out what this shit is.

But yeah, I guess you're right. How dare you commies not keep your mouth shut and continue to work in shitty conditions without complaint for the betterment of the motherland!
I hate it because it is a figurehead of a situation I dislike. Let me explain.
The Shuttles we have now are pretty much ancient. They're not cutting-edge technology anymore, not by a long shot. On one hand, it's great to have a reuseable spacecraft that has a relatively large payload. On the other, it's so very expensive keeping our fleet that most of the money allocated to NASA gets spent on shuttle maintenance and not on a: exploration and b: Research and Development. Since Congress is not thrilled with the idea of giving up even more money for (a) and (b) to happen in earnest, it's the space shuttles that are holding us back (even as they are our greatest step forward to date). Of course, the X-prize was wonderful and all, but that's nowhere even remotely close to what NASA did with the shuttles 30+ years ago. They are still the pinnacle of space flight. It's just that it costs so much, we can't seem to move past it to something bigger/better/faster/cheaper:(
And that's why I "hate" the shuttle program. It's more frustration than hatred, but after a while, it still boils down to a crappy feeling.
(to a true conservative who believes in less of a role for government in the lives of Americans) - you say that, but you can't actually mean it with Bush and the Christian Right involved in this. I wouldn't be NEARLY as hateful towards Bush if he dropped all this Christian bullshit here and now. A real conservative would look at this wild religious bent and shudder with terror; not because he's a Christian (as many conservatives are wont to be - and that's not a bad thing), but because he's forcing those religious rules through left and right, and, I'm sorry, but a religious rule with no rational justification behind it is wrong - in every situation; hence that whole "separation of church and state" amendment. Of course there's going to be some religious influence, but it's pretty obvious the founding fathers intended to attempt to keep the two as separate as possible; NOT by joining the two as one, or making one subserviant over the other.
This is the sole reason I despise Bush - and most Republicans, for that matter. Otherwise, while I disagree with their "less government" approach when it comes to monetary matters, I still respect it. But I can never respect anyone who is thrusting their religion into my lap by passing "values-based" rules, regulations, and laws. A true conservative would be angry that someone is taking the choice of determining their own values away and planting it in the lap of a government agency. But they aren't. It's sad.:(
I'm a libertarian on social matters - to an extreme - and very anti-business when it comes to business matters (especially when those business matters come into contact with the environment and personal civil rights vs. the right of someone else making a profit).
But I've rambled and I'm sure I'm going to take a hell of a Karma hit for this, but whatever. It had to be said.
I'd just be happy if he didn't leap on my full bladder first thing in the morning. You'd swear by the look he was giving me afterwards, I was the one who should have apologized for ruining HIS moment of relaxation.

This may not even be legal in the United States - at least for long.
I mean, come on, if they're going to ban model rockets like Estes (and their engines), how long until they do the same with these?
