I'm lazy. And I hate washing dishes. So what do I do with my dishes? I put them in the freaking dishwasher. You can replace a lot of scrubbing if you just let a machine take care of it.
I also like to let my brain do the same things with problems. You can sweat and fret over some technical or even personal problem, and hack out a solution that seems like it's the best you have (and yet seems inadequate), or you just let a machine take care of it.;-)
Although your post is mostly a rant about Republicans trying to steal elections through e-voting and the cliche "stop being selfish and solve world hunger," I think this sentence is important to comment on:
This could be seen as the fatal flaw of humanity: we don't care if we fail.
This is an absolutely fundamental part of the free market economy of the US. Unlike some parts of the world, it's not a huge black mark on your record if you fail. In fact, it's sometimes a badge of honor.
We're entrepreneurs that eagerly take risks, because those risks may just turn us into millionaires. Those risky endeavors are also where the huge innovations that change the world are created.
Sure, a lot of people that tackle this problem will fail. But it's the few that create real breakthroughs that will make us wonder how we ever got by punching holes into paper cards.
This is kind of an interesting point, although it will undoubtedly be seen as a troll.
GPL: Enourages sharing, thus is good. Those who do not share (GPL violation) should be found and punished (although thankfully most violators end up cooperating).
Copyright law: Restricts sharing, thus is bad. Those who share (copyright infringement) should be left alone and certainly not punished.
Yeah, because his dad is going to be modifying the Gimp's source code sometime soon.
Don't get me wrong, open source is great, but if a closed source alternative works better for your needs why not use it? Just admit that while it sounds good to say you support Free software, you really only give a shit about it because it's free software. I love Freedom, but the only time it really matters is when I want to modify the code (which happens very rarely).
I wonder if Dreamworks will ever come up with some original concepts for their animated films.
A Bug's Life/Antz (Obvious.) The Emperor's New Groove/Road to El Dorado (These were much closer originally, but changed quite drastically after rewrites on both sides). Monster's Inc./Shrek (This is quite a stretch, but hey, green monsters star in both, heh.) Treasure Planet/Sinbad (Hardy har har!) Finding Nemo/Sharkslayer (Something smells fishy here.)
Obviously these movies aren't all complete ripoffs by any stretch of the imagination, but it is quite interesting that Dreamworks/PDI movies that closely follow the release of Disney/Pixar ones have similiar basic ideas behind them.
Don't you mean Bizarro Bizarro World?
It did the same thing over two years ago. Please, Google and stock market trolls, think before writing.
You see guys? There's nothing to worry about.
:)
This outsourcing trend will eventually stop as soon as we're all living in poverty!

Oh no! Not "every goddamn year since 2002"! That's been...two whole years!
I believe it is "peace for our time."
Forward that this way, buddy!
You have pretty high expectations for a site that frequently commits the newspaper equivalent of printing the same article three days in a row.
Lock your doors. The feds are coming for your source code.
Wow, I'm gonna have to reformat my hard drive and install Linux again so I can stop getting spam emails!
I remember when 5.25" was the floppy standard.
I assume he'll be paying us...I mean, these "hacker" folk in small, unmarked bills, right?

How many people are concerned about patching their systems but don't want to upgrade from IE 3? ;)
Oh, so that's what the blue screen is for!
I will never curse the glorius blue screen of security again!
[...] highlight Microsoft's advantages in areas such as security [...]
Microsoft's products surely have advantages over their open source counterparts, but security? Come on!

[Chorus]
Billie Jean is not my copyright.
It's just a song that I have shared on Kazaa.
But it's an EXE -- booyah.
...you cheer on a country with such a horrid human rights record simply because its software ideals appear to align with your own.
Why don't they have "buy a new iPod, get a new Beetle"? Even I would jump at that opportunity. ;)
You're a registered member of Slashdot !
I was expecting much more after the promising 9 month beta test.

Sinbad is a Dreamworks film.
Dreamworks is not Disney.
Congratulations.
