It's very rare, but Slashdot users are missing the conspiracy theory on this one. This is a scheme to legally tie proprietary software (Windows) to the hardware. At some point in the near future, this BIOS will only allow you to install Windows. To install Linux, you will need to circumvent the BIOS. Circumvention is a DMCA violation and will get you sued by Microsoft and/or the hardware vendor. If the RIAA, MPAA and Microsoft have their way, DMCA violations will become a criminal offense. How about going to jail for installing Linux on a computer you purchased?
Tightens foil hat...
I don't care that much fo John Kerry, but if you want any hope at all of this type of thing going away, you'd better get out and vote for him in November.
Miss Cleo's record of predicting the tech industry is as good or better than Rob Enderle's. Enderle actually has a book coming out:
How to be semi-famous by pulling opinions out of your ass and never admitting you're wrong.
So the writer spent dozens upon dozens of hours building, tearing down, rebuilding and troubleshooting something that's going to be less reliable and more expensive than a TiVo? DirecTV with TiVo is $100 plus $5 a month, not $600
I can just hear his wife now, "Matt! I JUST want to watch American Idol! Can I PLEASE watch American Idol? Why is there no sound? How come the picture looks bad? Why do I have to reboot the computer just to watch TV? What's a General Protection Fault? Wait! Something just popped up on the TV that says 'NIMDA' what's NIMDA? The TV said 'C: drive full' while I was watching the Trading Spaces Marathon! MATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!"
Dude - just buy the TiVo and you're done. Seriously.
Paul Thurrott is the biggest Microsoft whore in the industry. He is the Windows equivalent of the stereotypical, senseless Linux-religious warrior. The guy is not a journalist in any sense of the word. Every one of his articles is simply Microsoft=Good, everyone else=bad. Thurrott says absolutely nothing worth reading. He is the Rush Limbaugh of the tech industry.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess that the Republican won, and that people whose votes weren't counted are registered Democrats. And that the voting system runs on Microsoft Access.
Why don't YOU try reading the F-ing article? The guy explicitly said he has 4 machines. Repair #4 took 5 minutes times four. Repair #3 took 15 minutes times four. Neither of those numbers is out of line.
None of the others is out of line. When Outlook crashes, you could easily spend 15 minutes to a half hour per crash trying to fix/update/patch/reinstall so it works right. When your ISP goes down, it could be a broken DHCP problem on your internal network, bad NIC, bad NIC driver, bad network cable, broken router, broken firewall config or broken personal firewall. It takes time to figure out whether the problem is you or them.
Sensationalism? You obviously know absolutely nothing about consulting or about how long it takes to fix a machine.
I have the same problem working for the Government. Largely Due to the wonderful economy, I've been stuck in the same stupifying contract job with the Government for almost three years. I work with the laziest, stupidest, most-weak kneed people humanity has to offer. The Government is stupider and more wasteful than I ever could have imagined. I hate every minute of this job, but when you need the money, sometimes you just have to take it. I am embarassed about working for the Government for this long. I sincerely hope that once the economy turns around, I'll be able to find employment in the private sector again. Government contractors have as bad a stigma as anyone who worked at Enron.
This is simply Bill Gates observing that "up-is-downism" works in today's society. Call me a troll if you want, but I mean this sincerely: The current US Presidential administration tells outright, baldfaced lies constantly and they get away with it. To them, up is down, black is white and so on. Gates figures that most people won't question Microsoft, so why not give it a shot? If Bush can get away with it, the heads of major corporations probably can too.
Because in the Gattaca "world", not everybody was genetically perfect. In the Gattaca company, they were. I'm sure the rich could afford better gene therapy than the middle class.
In the compact segment it was the remarkable Toyota Prius that took top honours with 4.5/4.7 and 63/60 mpg. This car is reliable too - a Vancouver-based Prius taxi was recently taken off the road with over 332,000 km on the clock and no major repairs. It was only taken out of service because Toyota in Japan wanted to strip it down and check everything out (the driver was given a new Prius at no charge). Perhaps even Toyota was amazed at this vehicle's astonishing durability, but some credit must go to driver, Andrew Grant.
If Adrian is such a great damn hacker, why doesn't he just go straight to the corporations and say, "Look, I know that I can hack into your system. How about you pay me to make it more secure." Rather than hacking in, and then saying, "Hey, let me make it up to you by showing how to secure it for free." See, that way, he gets money instead of going to jail.
Let's change the scenario, shall we? I drop my keys next to my car in a parking lot. Someone picks them up and tries my lock to see if they have the right car. They do, and they go through the car looking for an address and phone number. They find my business card and call me at work to give my keys back. Do I charge them with breaking and entering? Hell no. I give them a $20 for not allowing anyone else to steal my car.

That was one of the funniest things I've read in months. Thank you.
They found Iraq's WMD. They were flown to Mars using Saddam's top-secret balsa wood drone program. We will now invade Mars.

If you think they make a decent living, you're more than welcome to move there and work for $2,000 a year.
Work addiction is in indeed the hallmark of successful people. It is NOT, however, all hallmark of happy people.
If you have a problem with TiVo's data collection, call 877-367-8486 and opt out.

Their handwriting recognition is already crap. There is no way this will work at all. It's all show and no go.
This is a freaking advertisement for a vaporware product that may or may not be out in a few years. Microsoft should buy ad space on CNet...oh wait...

For the record, Lamo did not "knock the online version out" so I don't see how your argument is relevant to this case.
Yeah, because it's not like the Constitution requires probable cause and a search warrant or anything.
