Flamebait. You're obviously not a teacher or any type of leader/instructor so I'll just assume you're ignorant and tell you why it is important to know about student's lives.

First, this isn't just a good idea for a teacher... if you want to communicate with someone... be it as a Supervisor, Boss, Teacher... understanding that person as an individual will greatly help you communicate with them and create a rapport that will allow them to trust you as well. As for teaching... it is an incredibly intimate subject, everyone learns differently and you play to each person's strengths and weaknesses to help them learn best. The young boy who loves art might learn from hands on activities more than the girl who sits with her nose in a book and would rather just do rote worksheets to learn.

One of the hardest jobs I ever held was a substitute teacher. As a sub you rarely make those connections with students and you are just a person in the room covering for the teacher... who knows them best. You don't know the kid who lives in a motel room because they are too poor to afford an apartment... and how that might affect his learning. No, I'm sorry, but from my experience you are completely wrong... in fact Schools probably need more of the OPPOSITE... more teachers need to understand their students and their backgrounds. Public Education has its problems that need repair... but needing more teachers detached from their student's personal lives is NOT one of them.

Thank you, I have written about this several times. The video game industry is even worse than the film industry when it comes to trivializing and objectifying women. At least in film, women with "undesirable" figures can land parts and be leads in motion pictures... in the gaming industry, modelers and board executives create their sexual fantasies and incorporate them into the game. Damn near every female game character is some archetypal short, buxom, hyper-sexualized character to fulfill the designer, artist and players sexual fantasies. Why isn't Alyx Vance a little husky? Why is Lara Croft a sex bomb with huge breasts when her figures and career tells me should would probably be closer to flat chested and sinewy.

The video game industry is stuck being the fantasy playground of horny young males... and I don't see this terrible trend changing any time soon. Why make a realistic character when you can just model the girl of your dreams... and on the flip side, what horny male teen wants to play a game with a lead character that looks like Kathy Bates?

They are charged with upholding the law, saving lives and educating the youth of the future... a bad public servant can be detrimental, but a really great servant can influence lives. Why aren't those jobs worth $50 million a year?

I don't buy it and I don't believe you even make a rational argument. I'm not complaining that the doctor next door makes a lot of money... because he is tasked with a demanding job and earns his pay. But I will not even hear arguments that someone deserves to make 500 times my salary because his job is "Sooo Demanding". Is the Coal miner's job demanding? Black lung, cave ins and asphyxiation are the dangers they face... that sounds more demanding than sitting in a board room signing papers.

No sir, corporate pay is WAY to high and disproportionate... particularly since most CEOs aren't the company founder. Like I said earlier, I'm not a businessman, that's not my job.... but I guarantee my job is as equally demanding and large numbers of people rely on me to do my best work. Besides, I'm sure I can run a business just as well as Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling... and I'll do it for 1/100th the cost.

Merill Lynch employs 56,300 people. 161 MILLION dollars for one man is a travesty... I will stake my life that the work of any CEO is no more demanding than jobs most of us do. That chunk of change would have amounted to almost $3000 per employee, now wouldn't THAT be a nice Christmas bonus for those individuals.

I believe the average CEO pay in the US is FIVE HUNDRED times the average employee wage. Now, I work... oh maybe 55-60 hours a week, including unpaid time spent outside of work ON work. Now... I sure hope that O'Neal, who earned 48 MILLION dollars in 2006, works 27,000 hours a week. I will wager anything that most of us work just as hard and will probably just break ONE million in our lives.

Maybe some people see egregious severance packages as a "good business decision" but I cannot in good conscience and reasoning even see that. Pay CEO's less and treat them like any employee... bad at your job, 'You're Fired'(tm).

True, buttons have become daunting... press this with this to crouch and fire mode 2. Metroid Prime 3 was an excellent use of the controls to play a 3D shooter. I think when you said you were going to augment your gaming library by having a 360 and a Wii is the most important part. Sometimes I don't want to monkey around and swing my arms like a gorilla... sometimes I want to sit on the couch with a controller and just be a vegetable. With the power of the other 2 consoles, there are many games the Wii simply can't do... which you need another console if you enjoy them (loved 'Dead Rising', Gears of War and a number of other 360 releases). I was particularly excited about the new Ghostbusters game and was saddened that the Wii version is dumbed down to a cartoon... I want photo-realistic shaders and high poly models with real time lighting and other buzz words for my Ghostbusters gaming experience... but would love to use the Wii controls.

OK, so I'm rambling now and forgot where I was going with this. I think it will take some time before we will know if the Wii sold because it was hot... or peopel really wanted one. If Nintendo moves tons of games for the system, since there are so many in homes, then it probably was true... but if game sales are lax and people don't purchase many, I would argue it was probably a fad. We'll see, you might be right.

The 360 is relatively the same price... $270, even if it is the version without the HDD it is still a "360" as far as they care. The people buying them as gifts don't care about price, for the most part... if their kid wants a 360, then so be it, that's what they'll get.

This is an honest to god response I got from a middle aged woman at work when I told her my parents were looking for a Wii, "What's that?" the other secretary said "It's the thing where you move your arms around to bowl." the first woman replied "Ugh, no thanks." i know this is just a silly anecdotal story... but this isn't the first time I've hear the Wii described as a toy. People say "old people and every generation are playing the Wii" and the commercials try to paint that, too... but I have never seen it. I'm sure there will be a story or two of a grandparent using it... but it just isn't happening. The people buying them are the same gamers that have always bought consoles and kids who ask their parents for it because it's the hot new item. I'm sorry if it hurts to hear, but I just don't see the "outreach" people claim the Wii has... I really think it's just the hot thing to have, particularly because you can't find it.

  10. Re:Curious on Wii Shortages Costing Nintendo 'A Billion' In Sales · · Score: 1

The bigger question... for me at least... is WHY is it a surprise hit? There still are so few, really good reasons to own a Wii. In the past year very few blockbuster titles have been released... and others delayed. People are quick to claim that Nintendo made a console that is "just for everybody" and people are buying it in droves because it is so awesome and original... but I don't think so. I have never met anyone who didn't grow up with video games even give another thought to the Wii above any other console. My parents bought one for the grandkids and were totally confused and could care less. My old coworkers... could care less. Grandparents... don't care.

I still believe that the reason... the REAL reason... the Wii is selling is the "cool" factor. Why did everyone want a Tickle me Elmo? Why do certain Action Figures sell out? Something picks up steam and word of mouth and soon everyone wants one... the less they can find it... the more they want it. I know tons of people who bought Wiis the first year because they thought it was cool... now it collects dust because they beat the 3 games they owned and nothing has been released. I owned one myself but never saw the allure. A fine console... but not amazing like it is claimed. If the Wii is TRULY selling to every demograph and a huge hit... then me being an average slice of the consumer market should see it... but I just don't.

However, I think that, many times, we consider the "reward pellet" to be someting tangible. The "reward" I dole out the most is praise.. and, to be honest, kids eat it right up...as do adults. "Nice job Greg" or "Tommy, I've been really impressed with your behavior this week, keepit up" or even "Janie, what a terrific story, you must have put a lot of work into it". Sometimes, the "reward" doesn't have to be anything more than a compliment. Even as an adult, when someonenotices I've done something good, it feels damn goo to know it and be told I'm doing a nice job. I don't recall many professors telling me that I did nice work on a project, and the few times they did... I felt really good.

The phrase always struck me a a snide comment against teachers, as though we are incapable of anything else so we teach. Many people who know what they're doing would make TERRIBLE teachers... which happens quite frequently in college.
