Russinovich notes a convergence of the Linux kernel towards the Windows kernel by pointing out the additions of kernel pre-emptivity and re-enterance as if these were concepts unique to Windows. He brings up the already discredited argument that Linux is based on Minix, which both Andy Tennenbaum and Linux Torvalds deny, to paint Linux as a Minix derivative work. In going over I/O management, security management, virtual memory management and other basic functions, he points out similarities. It seems that any two relatively sophisticated kernels can be compared with similarities noted on their basic functions, but it doesn't mean that one fostered the other.
His argument does not show Linux converging to Windows anymore than it show Windows converging to Linux.
A relationship between open source software and corporations can exist. But to the business suit crowd, could you please leave the bullshit keywords at the door?
You mean leave only the bullshit business keywords? And that the bullshit OSS developer keywords should be adopted by the business person?
It shouldn't be so far fetched that each learns the terminology of the other to facilitate communication and understanding.
Patents were never intended to give people a monopoly over just a neat idea that can potentially make money.
That's is precisely why patents are given.
The unintended consequence is that shifty IP carpetbaggers and claimjumpers will apply for a patent on an existing ideas and technologies in order to extort undeserved licensing fees. They couch their patent application language in broad or vague terms to disguise their real targets, not that it seems to matter as the patent office examiners seem totally clueless.
If patent examiners only lived in the same world as the rest of us, we wouldn't have this bogus new business model of suing for IP violations when no such thing really exists.
...somebody suggested that the USPTO be closed because everything that can be invented has been invented. It should be closed today because it's willing to grant patents on the wheel.
What's wrong with this picture? Microsoft has over $56 billion in the bank and should be dominating the console market.
I always cringe when I see somebody equating money with intelligence, status or whatever. The fact is that MS is Johnny-come-lately in the console gaming market and they have to play catch up with entrenched big name competitors. Having good titles available on your platform is more a function of branding and getting to market first than the size of MS's wallet.
The KDE and Gnome desktops have gotten heftier but criticisms seem misdirected at Linux. It seems to me that the blame should fall on the developers of the unweildy desktops and applications. The are other lightweight GUI's that will do only what many users need without all the bloat. Current distros still run quite well on older hardware if the user eschews the KDE, Gnome and unneed services.
Traditionally, Japanese is written from upper right, downward, then from the top again, working to the left. However, the more contemporary style is to write from left to right in the western style.
Wouldn't that be "Morals == Profit?" given that I posted "Morals = Profit?". Since I'm really asking a question, not making a variable assignment, the error in meaning that you ascribe to my post is likeless erroneous in the reply.
A few months ago, I had heard that some groups were working on cracking the scheme using a collaborative method similar to the SETI project. The expectation was that it would be cracked before the official rollout in April.
Maybe, it's just me, but it seems like an awful lot of effort to watch low budget Japanese melodramas.
You paid $160 for a free operating system!? P.T. Barnum was dead on.
Free? Nothing's free. Even this d/l is costing me something. Then I've gotta burn it on disks that aren't free.

That is completely false.

We're refering to Bubblegum Crisis, a Japanese anime, not Blade Runner the movie starring Harrison Ford.
I don't recall them being naked either.
I think it only applies if Slashdot has a server in Brazil.

I'm not an expert but I don't know why the ".bak" part is necessary.

Looks like the same gaggle of rabid geese or clump of chattering monkeys who prepare my page for me also decide what stories to run and re-run on /.
Not enough people are running Linux as root.
The time when either Tarantella or SCO were decent companies was before the current reign of Darl.
Punctuation counts.

Nobody likes a pedantic ass. :^)
It's a brave new world.
How does McBride fit in this list?

I still use pine. Must be the nostaglic streak in me.
