I also wonder if Sony may be able to stop others from making matching projectors since they probably own some Patents around this technology?
Sony is no Redmond company. they will most likely license the technology to competitors, or Sony's competitors will come up with something similar or better. I don't know if Sony has any type of deal with this "Stewart Filmscreen" company, but Sony knows how risky it is to play "exclusive" in the market and make things incomatible from rest of the world. Sony will probably need allies to promote this one.
I wonder if this is the very concept William Gates conceived when he was writing the famous (and infamous) Open Letter to Hobbyists. I guess there are things to learn even from drug dealers then. Brilliant nevertheless, brilliant -- regardless of the quality of what he sells.
the best wordprocessing application I've ever used is WordPerfect 5.x, as far as my personal preference is concerned. It did all I wanted to do --to type-- without mouse clicks and without any confusion. If I want to write something besides "college paper" or a formal letter, I won't use either WP or MS Office. Some people values simplicity of application highter than extra features that they won't use. Not to mention how much memory these extra features would use is another factor to consider.
they also fear that the personnel would have problems with learning how to use OpenOffice...
so, are they saying that learning MS Office is substantially easier than learning OO for an average city employee in Munich with no previous experience with office application? oh, are they talking about vi?
None of Microsoft's ads on the web has had as much impact and influence on me as what netcraft.com showed me a few years ago when I searched wehavethewayout.com, which is an MS ad site.
Putting Pepsi ads on IloveCoke.com site and say, "new discovery! Coke will melt your teeth!" is absolutely nonsense and ineffective. But as long as the content of the website won't be influenced by the presence of a sponsor for the sake of the advertisement revenues, I wouldn't mind having hate-linux ads by MS. That makes me wonder what percentage of XP retail price is going toward advertising.
As we have already seen in "TCO research(!)" and "you'll be sued by SCO(!)" campaigns, people in tech are more sophisticated than those who take pills without a doubt after watching a diet pill commercial. Readers of LinuxToday.com? hmm..., good luck MS.
Moreover, (though this is off-topic) in my personal opinion, most of TV and streaming video ads for MS products are corny and amateurish, low in concept and poorly executed. Ads are to influence people to buy products, but many of MS ads are simply too obnoxious and annoying. I rather forget by all means about two middle-age guys in purple butterfly costume dancing. Do you remember any of MS ads? I doubt you do. Only thing I can remember is the one called "1984." That one was cool.... oh, wait...
He goes on to say that governments planning to use it will damage their own economies and that giving away source code is shooting yourself in the foot.
In any case, developers in India will probably be busy for the next several years. Microsoft is an American corporation, as are Nike and Walmart.
Thanks for the info. I wasn't so clear about writers credits in details, as I am not on that side of the business. It sounds somewhat complicated.
I've heard from people I know, though, that writer's credits are often regarded too lightly despite their creative contributions to the story and hours they spend. Hollywood needs to pay more respects to writers, IMO, because all the film making begins on the keyboard (or with a pen and paper!).
When the Hollywood picks up a novel and makes a film based on it, the film version becomes a separate entity from the novel. Keep in mind that the director will make the film according to HIS interpretations of the same story we've read. In addition the studio, producers and director will alter the settings and the story line in the way they want to so that the film becomes more suitable for their targeted audiences. It is extremely rare for a director to have enough (political) power during the development stage to maintain the authenticity of the novel. As a result, the finished film will be losely resembling to the book.
The author of the original novel is usually credited ambiguously as "story by" or "based on." Actual writing for the film is done by an army of screenwriters and script doctors, who will receive little credits (if they are lucky!). The only reason the studio gives credit to the author of the novel is so that they won't be involved in legal troubles. Well-known writers with a household name also have added value for the marketing of the film.
When you see a film based on a novel, don't expect to see what you read in the original novel --because no film director can beat what your imagination can create. Films hit your vision. Novels speak to your heart.
I didn't mean to say Moore's films are comedy and I've never regarded so. I think that's why Moore called his own films in such a degrading way as a joke, if he ever did. If you thought I was implaying that his films were comedy, that's due to the lack of my English skills.
There are real events, real people and real opinions for filmmakers and journalists to make a film out of. How Moor assembled and presented all the materials in the way they came out is solely depending on Moore's creative decisions and skills (talent).
Moore is an extraordinary documentary film maker who has a thing or two to say. Regardless of how politically motivated his films are, as long as what is shown to us is factual, his films are documentary films, as were many of war-propaganda films in the past. We, in this society, do not subdivide the genre of documentary into pieces based on how the facts are being presented to us.
Since I installed Windows 2K on top of Fedora, Linux doesn't boot up. I had Suse and Mandrake on the same disk also. Maybe Windows doesn't like to dual boot either? Is this a bug and should I report this to MS?
Or is this some sort of Windows "special feature?"
Who's modding this parent post as "Informative?" Give us a break!
Mockmentaries refers to those scripted comedy films that take documentary style (handheld, talking-head interviews, bad lighting/framing). Many of Christopher Guest's films are good examples:
See the difference. These are all staged and scripted(act/performance). Moore's films are anything but mockumentaries. They are neither staged nor scripted!!! (except for narrations, which is necessary)
The parent post is rated completely wrong and/or overrated. I can't belive that people are swallowing this horse sh*t without a doubt...
as much as many people refer to this film as "the most boring film from Lucas," I find more substance and underlying themes in this film than his later films. Lucas made original THX at (I believe) school, and prior to that, he made a 16mm non-sync B&W film with a similar theme for his film assignment. this one is the origin of THX. I saw both preceding films. they both have very pessimistic, paranoid story lines.
what I thought from viewing the THX trilogy was that Lucas' sound design skill is extraordinary, and that he did actually created futuristic atmosphere successfully without relying heavily on visual/special effects. when there is no money, people find creative ways to achieve goals, and Lucas did so very well.
quite a few film schoolers/professionals I know refer to THX as Lucas' best film. IMO it is not an overstatement.
I don't mean to be cynic, but I couldn't help wondering what practical use this vehicle may have. with two passengers maximum, this looks to me like fancy miata of aircraft. maybe this can become California governor's commuter vehicle, but I don't want to see dozens of these flying around above my neighborhood.
if you are referring to Avid you are correct. More precisely many of broadcast quality NLE are Quicktime based. Avid also offers Xpress for Windows platforms, but AFAIK media(video) files are stored in.omf, which is essentially Quicktime. I'm not saying one format is superior to the other, but Avid has been this way. As for the studios, the reason Quicktime is preferred I think is because of the quality/file size of codec (by Sorensen).
I'm just curious what format would satisfy the parent poster. AVI? RealPlayer? ASF? WMV? last time I tried to watch streaming video(Windows Media), it didn't play but asked me to install WMP9. Thanks for asking, but where can I download WMP9 that runs on my machine?
This "good" virus sounds all good, but makes me wonder what would happen to the next generation if a couple of treated patients have children. Conventional theory is that if mother is HIV positive, her baby will be positive as well. If male (father) is positive, his sperm will contain HIV virus.
The article says that the new virus "won't likely eliminate all HIV cells in a patient." If that's the case, malicious HIV virus will remain in parents' body, while it won't be as active. If child of patients inherit both viruses s/he will also be HIV positive, just that the virus won't develop into AIDS and therefore safe. But if the new virus won't inherit to a new born, only the real HIV virus will likely be transmitted from mother to baby, which can be fatal.
It's premature to speculate such scenarios, but I couldn't stop wondering as this virus may change the meaning of "HIV positive." This new development may stop the epidemic, but I don't want to pass the remains of HIV virus to the future generations even if it's inactive.
actually the prior arrests are of the users of this software, for making illegal copies of software and movies available to public for download/share with winny. the creator of Winny, at that point, was questioned by the authority to cooperate in their investigation.
now the authority decided to arrest him because from what he (mr. "47") wrote on "2ch" message board earlier, his intention to support copyrights infringement by developing Winny was clear. --he allegedly wrote:
"we will face changes in current concept of copyrights as file sharing software with total anonymity become available anytime soon. maybe I can push that trend." (translation by me)
it is a breaking case as the developer of p2p software got arrested, but the background of arrest leaves me wonder what would have happened if "47" did not mention copyrights issues publicly and left the purpose of development innocent. even though Winny has already caused much trouble, making an arrest case could have been far more difficult.
well, this is something known in SE Asia as art of counterfeit. have you seen Rolex (or something that looks like Rolex) made in SE Asia? at least they know that if they *rip off* anything from MS, they'll be in big trouble. so they took the refined open source project apart and made it look like theirs.
what bothers me though, is that they have this very (north) American-looking site to attract investors, despite the progress of *their* project. this so-called project exists purely to collect as much investors' money as possible without actually developing something. now they say they have screenshots. but guess what,
The screenshots were taken by SpecOps Labs staff; Flexbeta does not have actual access to the Winbridge application.
hmm... how convenient.
this company somehow reminds me of this startup a few years ago, claiming that their then-upcoming operating system would become alternative for Windows and run windows applications without any glitch. after trials and errors (as well as marketing hypes), they changed their promise, as they couldn't make their OS fully compatible with all windows applications. the name of the new operating system was "Lindows."
Lindows survived, but I don't think this wine/xover rip off will survive, as they don't seem to have anything to sell but too-good-to-be-true claims. teach them what GPL means and protects if they still want to fiddle with OSS.
I downloaded iso for two full DVDs via broadband once. it was feasible, using rars and pars, but it took me a few days to complete because of download limit/day my provider's service has. I'm sure the server will be busy for 24/7 if you have ISOs on the server.
how about just selling DVD distro over the net or off the shelf? I'd love to have a complete distro with a full set of apps in one disk, without worrying about installing and all that. say good bye to dependancy hells.
I've been using SuSE for a while (currently 8.2), and I've had similar problem with the last couple of edition of SuSE when I was installing it on laptops. By default YaST doesn't configure 2 mice (touch pad + usb) set up, and only SaX does. But the problem is when I configure mice using SaX, YaST will overwrite the mice config file after reboot. If you ever need to reconfigure mice setup, NEVER use sax.
I believe it did support dual mice during installation, but after the installation was finished, USB mouse was not working properly for some reasons.
anyway, I usually end up making changes in the config file(XF86Config) by text editor/vi so the mice will work properly. You just need to add one more input device in it. I love suse, but I have to admit configuring mice on SuSE can be a pain.
Keep in mind Home Depot sells all necessary supplies to build this very cheap. No matter how they advertise it, it's PLYWOOD after all. Cutting a sheet of plywood to make a box is not difficult, though it could be time-consuming. Every line is straight cut and all corners are 90degree angles. Can't be any easier.
Although I don't dislike the cases on the site,
1. combination of black plastic pieces and stained wood doesn't look pleasent 2. sheets of plywood glued or bolted on top of aluminum case??? -- go figure.
If you are good at woodworking, most likely you can build a similar case -- or much better one -- by a fraction of cost. Besides you have control over the design of the case. "Buying" is merely one of options you have.
you mean, something like THIS!? It's already out. An unfinished kit costs 9800yen (about $100 USD) and a finished box costs 13800yen (about $140 USD). their site says the box doesn't require any glue to assemble because glued paper (cardboard) will make the quality of paper poor when it is recycled... oh well. How much is a cardboard house?
Lately I have received a few emails that claim to be originated from ebay. It said my account will be suspended permanently. I sent email to real ebay and it turned out these emails are total scam. This one looked very authentic, as was it plain as real mails from ebay. Here's the copy of the mail:
******************
SafeHarbor Pre-Suspension
Dear customer,
We regret to inform you that your eBay account will be suspended due to the violation of our site policy below:
* Misrepresentation of Identity (User) - Representing yourself as another eBay user or registering using the identity of another. Due to the suspension of this account, please be advised you are prohibited from using eBay in any way.
This includes the registering of a new account. Please note that this suspension does not relieve you of your agreed-upon obligation to pay any fees you may owe to eBay. According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by completing the following form or else your account will be deleted.
For a moment, I thought this was authentic. But after a few seconds I found holes in this scheme. The mail was in html (unusual for ebay) and the link is actually blank and it redirect to another page (login-secure-online.tk) that disguise ebay's official page with authentic ebay logo and looks (the page has been taken off after several minutes of the arrival of the mail). The page asks you to enter credit card number, PIN, 3digit security code, both of the last two are absolute no-no in any circumstances anyway.
I would vote one for this email as one of the best scam, but sadly, we know who the winner is only if and when the perpetrators are arrested.

I would rather pay for Homer's voice than let producer(s) and/or studio execs buy private jet every time an episode is aired.
