I was visiting this pr0n site yesterday and it asked me to install a plugin on Mozilla. It was a sleezy toolbar called xxxtoolbar (http://xxxtoolbar.com/). Yes, it was just like the one for IE you saw on your friend's hijacked computers. Needless to say I did not allow installation of this stupid plugin. I clicked "cancel" and no plugin was installed, but while I was doing so, cookies were created, and they prevented me from viewing the pages I was visiting, unless the cookies were deleted.
I wondered how many people would allow this junk to be installed, unknowing what it really does.
Firefox/Mozilla's success is all great and wonderful, but some guys are already starting to make junks to mess with FF/Mozilla. Beware.
Wow, that sounds great. I was expecting to see a free Service Patch on their website to fix the security flaws. As far as I know that's how businesses take care of flawed products nowadays.
My question is whether or not other OSs also make you want to reboot as frequently as Windows XP does. 30day uptime doesn't seem to be very uncommon on netcraft.com.
hold on, something seems to be wrong here. Check this out. Blu-ray is to be used by Sony, Philips, Pioneer and others, while NEC/Toshiba are planning to use HD DVD, aren't they? You won't find NEC and Toshiba's name on Blu-Ray's official site, as far as I can see.
And to clarify further, in either case scenario, MS will win because both Next-gen DVD formats will most likely use MS codec.
At this point, I think HD DVD (by NEC/Toshiba) is a history. And I wouldn't be surprised even if Sony has a second thought on the codec they will use for distribution. I want to see Sony leaving MS or coming up with something other than MS codec.
The HDR-FX1 Handycam® camcorder records and plays back high definition video with 1080 interlaced lines of resolution - the highest resolution (1440 pixels x 1080 lines) of any consumer camcorder available.
So the maximum resolution you can get with this camera is 1440 x 1080, which still doubles the lines of current DV resolution in both x/y axes, and quadruples the number of pixels.
Squeezed 16:9 is not that unusual, considering the price of the camera. If you want native 16:9 resolution, you might want to get this one instead of the new camera.
as far as I remember "Reveal Formatting" option in Word reveals only icons and symbols for limited formatting options (i.e. hard returns). Word processing on Word is still GUI based and heavily depends on use of mice.
In contrast, "Reveal Code" function in Wordperfect splits the window and reveals most of the formatting options, including font size and tab settings, in command lines. Formatting options show up just like options in an html document, marking the beginning and ending points to which the option applies. I don't know if this goes same in recent versions of WordPerfect, but at least up until version 8 or so the "Reveal Code" function followed what it did in WP 5.x.
It is redundant to say, but this is one of the main reasons many WP users still choose WordPerfect over Word and OpenOffice. I used to use WP until I switched to OpenOffice, but I still feel that it's easier to edit part (or all) of document using the reveal code function than using the mouse highlighting lines or words and apply format change, which often causes unexpected results.
Why? Well, quite simply, using biodiesel not only are you saving money and the environment,
The (sub)products of fuel cell reaction => ???
Answer: electricity, water
I don't know abut Biodiesel, but to my eyes fuel cell is much safer a power source than nuclear reaction. I wonder if there will be any use of fuel cell for household, to ease our dependency to distributed electricity generated by nuclear reaction.
This is a great news as we really need open standard codec for broadcast streaming. BBC is already influential in the broadcast business. Once their new codec is acknowledged by SMPTE, it's matter of time that the new codec will be used widely by media conglomerates in the US. It may take some time to catch up, and/or there may be attacks by proprietary codec providers, but open standards will eventually prevail (...hopefully).
As a non-Windows OS user, compatibility is extremely important for me. I'm sick of media contents that don't play but ask me to "update your browser/media player/codecs." Someone may think "proprietary technology" that locks in consumers is synonym to "business opportunity." Apparently BBC has a different opinion and doesn't want to swallow the pill.
What kind of blind OSS zealotry is this? If somebody said something similar of IE there would be a unanimous uproar of upbraids from the slashdot community against whoever said it.
I thought the reason IE gets bashed harder than Moz/FireFox was because the browser is integrated to the OS by default, making all sorts of spoof activities like popup warnings for false Windows updates possible, even when you are not browsing the web. If you don't like FireFox because it's vulnerable, just uninstall it and find alternatives. Can you do the same with IE?
p.s. BTW, the OS I am using now is not integrated with IE. Although I use Windows also, it is a stand alone machine with no network connection.
it is a 'teaser' not a 'trailer' considering they show absolutely nothing but
Not necessarily absolutely nothing though. The very first thing I thought while watching it was that there was no legacy whatsoever from the world Tim Burton created in the previous series. ABSOLUTELY no more Joel Schumacher's so ambiguously gay theme either. Obviously Warner is reinventing the series, which is good. The film appears so British!!
Director: Christopher Nolan
Actors: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson Location?... hmm
It's obviously more pessimistic and darker than the previous series. I was becoming sick lately of optimistic live-action adaptations of Marvel comics. I can't wait for this one.
So long as I can download Windows XP and get a valid serial number generator, I have no reason to install Linux.
And that makes you spend more maintenance costs and troubleshooting time than using Linux. Pirating and using a poorly designed OS will cost you in the form of time, money and personal data even if you feel that you're saving money. Even if obtaining a copy of XP is free, using it may not be free after all.
I am sure that powerful corporations will take advantage of "closed" BIOS and/or make deals with motherboard manufacturers sooner or later, implement software activation and DRM to work with proprietary BIOS so that your computer is always "secure", keeping you/your computer from hacker's attacks or potential law suits from RIAA and MPAA and BSA by protecting you from pirated music, video and software.
Day by day, the world is getting better and safer a place for us. I am happy as long as there is a BIOS that allows me to install an OS of my choice on my PC. 90+% of market share doesn't and will not take away my rights to choose what I use.
Even though this may look like a bad example of a private company violating the freedom of expression, this program should have started much earlier in the history of the Internet in UK. This is a shame. I mean, how many children are still being exploited everyday? Only if I could turn back the time.
It doesn't matter to me even if this would make it difficult for me to finish my research on child abuse. Has this program started, say, only a few years ago, I wouldn't have become a registered pedophile. Dammit.

p.s. I've been using news groups lately. They are awesome!!
I believe that the TCO studies may have valid points IF they are unbiased, but the data MS releases is partial and everything else that doesn't make Windows look good will be disregarded. they are the one who conduct the study, so they can choose only the desirable results to be released to public.
another problem is that MS funded TCO studies do not accurately anticipate downtime caused by malware or virus outbreaks. windows may be the winner in some studies, but statistics on paper can't guarantee a lower TCO in real life. If MS wants to be more credible, they should conduct a research on average downtime and estimate of financial damages caused by malware/virus last 6 months. My guess is that the world biggest marketing company won't do.
I can't be sure, but I believe that newly rebuilt vision sends upside down images to the brain, and it takes a while for a person to get used to it. I read this in a psychology book. Why upside down? Remember eyes work like lenses.
A newborn can cope with it very quickly, as they don't even have a sense of dimensions. However, it is more difficult for an adult to cope with it.
I've heard of a similar story, about a man who couldn't live in the world he could see. I think Hollywood made this film inspired by such incidents. The film, however, was a bomb. It is a very interesting subject, nevertheless, and I think there should be some sort of counseling available to those who are gaining vision for the first time.
Your comment misleads people to think that economical factor is the only resource that allows software to mature. Is software for Windows buggy because everyone pirates it and don't pay for it? I don't think so. I rather think that Windows has fundamental problems in the OS and the development environment.
If money is the only issue for programmers to write better software, why not can the company run by the world richest man accomplish it? Considering money as resource, Microsoft is by far the wealthiest and Linux/FOSS development base is the worst. If you think the number of developers as resource, probably Linux or Windows will come on top of the three, leaving Mac behind. Considering talent as resource, probably all three are even. Lastly, if you think management as resource, IMHO Apple comes first, Linux/FOSS the second, and with a large margin, Microsoft comes very last of three.
It's all my opinion, of course, so you may have a different opinion. And yes, I agree that Apple is doing a fine job for where it is now.
Living in Los Angeles, I may feel much safer if cars on LA freeways are driven by Penguins rather than by typical LA drivers, or in other words, by a bunch of illegal immigrants from all over the world with a "valid" driver's license.
I have absolutely no doubt that mplayer will remain in my system as a primary media player regardless of what helix will bring to the Linux desktop experience. And meantime, I am hoping to see NLE apps which offer features that are on par with Avid and FCP (mainactor is still low-key).
No one can foresee how successful Helix will become, but I couldn't stop wondering about the possibility of Helix-based NLE. I don't care for Real as far as media format/codecs are concerned. But if GPL'd Helix (with no real codecs) has something to offer, that should be multimedia solutions to Linux.
I may be too naive and optimistic to think about this, though.
