It is well known that these suits don't have any effct on MS business practices. From a money standpoint, it is almost impossible to fine them enough that it is worth their while to comply. The lawsuits take years, at which time the tech will become obsolete, all the while there is an obscene amount of cash coming in that can pay any lawsuits that have been brought forth in the past. I don't have the answer to stopping shady business practices like this but realize that it hurts the creativity of companies that try to compete. Why would I ever compete against a company that uses these practices as opposed to just starting widget company that has nothing to do with their market.
Someone is going to do it eventually anyway. If apple wants to get any cash from PC's using their OS they will have no choice but to come up with a "real" version to conteract the hacked versions that are undoubtedly going to spring up on every torrent site sometime in the near future (if not already)
The way I see it, Google has not held up their end of this mysterious aggreement between the two parties. I think the two companies should just part ways. They are to have no associations with each other that would facillitate other disaggreements. To this end, Kinderstart should not have any links or mention of Google on their site and vice-versa.
Search for Accoona spyware (google or Accoona) and you will see how they advertise. This is not only spyware, but they are apparently spammers, according to Wikpedia. How did this get on slashdot? I am amazed that a site on/. is an ad for spyware. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist , but is this the end of/.
It was a fun ride, but the Wall Street community is large and powerful. All the power to Google if they can hold out, they made all the right moves, but eventually the "can't fight city hall" mentality will creep into the workforce and stifle new creativity. The employees will start working for next quarters results instead of the grand plan envisioned by the company heads.
I liked your post, but the other side can be argued too. An example would be hotmail, that grew originally at a fast pace with no marketing (pre-MS). The product was in itself viral and required no outside marketing. Google and Firefox were spread with groundswell from the lowly man on the street - no paid shills required, all geeks become the shills. An insanely good product will sell itself, and begs the question - if the effort to market a product is inversely proportional to quality of product? I know this is an obviously incorrect theory, but nonetheless often true.
All game developers released a sigh of releif when the new Phantom console was officially postponed. They were all shaking in their boots wondering how to cope with this new console that will destroy all other consoles. It's not fair to have this over their heads for all this time ond now only to postpone and have them all worrying for years to come.:)
What are they going to do? Fine them? - it is already well known that you can not fine them enough to make it feasible for them to stop these practices. MS has moved above the law of any land. I feel the only hope is OSS as a groundswell, this the only way to solve the current software stagnation that is around today.
Why fix an old piece of hardware when you can get a new one faster, smarter, more shiny, etc.
How about a donation to a university to rip it apart or try to fly it again.
Neither did I, went looking through the comments for a link. Very good idea lost in the crap. Just have a higher rate for the large ads and get rid of all the small crap. I was willing to sit through the ad to read the article, but instinctively did not look at the banner crap.
Time to start finding out the real reasons for this happening. The investors that have been pumping money into SCO knowing full well there is no merit to the case. This deserves an investigation. I can't think of any investors, even the most dim-witted that would put money into propping up this boondoggle unless there is another motive involved. The old adage of follow the money comes to mind.
Personal note - weened my 5 year old off of McDonalds. Just went with the phrase "Daddy doesn't go to Donalds" - after a while - he doesn't even ask anymore. The kid knew McDonalds before he was ever there, from birth! - pretty good job if they can advertise to the kids before they can learn to speak.
By definition hack is an art - some old hacks were not necessarily scientific. Think the University that changed the placards that were held up by the opposing team. - sorry can't remember exactly....
Not being someone who carries a handbag - this sounds like one of those - "Damn, why didn't I think of that" ideas. The phone charging setup is also a perfect use of tree hugger friendly and chic. I can foresee this becoming a very useful trend. Where do I get the rights?
This is IBM's foray into the market that is dominated by the Xerox Docutech's. The Printing industry is moving toward Print on Demand. The concept is instead of a run of ten thousand books, it will print a single book as opposed to setting up a traditional printing press with minimum run lengths.

But I thought that SCO has a new line of software. If China went exclusivly SCO they would have the potential to rule (sue) the world.

Another example of government thinking that they can artificially manipulate the market.
Any system that tries to rely on the goodwill of a naturally sleazy business is doomed to fail no matter how you look at it.
Inciteful
I don't believe google goes through the slashdot comments or at least make them count for anything, but I could be wrong.

Imagine gas stations to fill up your car and your laptop.
You're a sick bastard. Although this will become a hobby of mine now.

Check the name.

Used my last mod point yesterday - sorry you'd get one.....

I would at least give a point to reset that, to offset the bad mod if I had mod points. .....I think that makes sense?
