I'm not going to evaluate whether or not you have the math wrong because I think you have the premise wrong. You may accept the death of 2 of your 1000 closest friends, but tell me, how many times will you accept your wife's death in a terrorist attack? Or your children's? Or your own (although technically this would be unacceptable)? Or do you (because of some evolutionary hiccup) place equal value on these lives as you do others?

  9. Re:doofus on Trading the Markets With FOSS Software? · · Score: 1

Regulators messed up? What regulators? The problem with the AIG "bail out" is that it's not a bail out at all. It's just a 2 year bridge, so that it becomes someone else's problem. Bernanke, Paulson, and the rest of them won't be around then to care. In 2 years, when they definitely won't be able to pay back their loan (how many bankrupt companies can you name that could pay back an $85 bln loan @ 11.5% interest in 2 years??), We will give AIG another one. And then again 2 years after that. And so it goes... Financial collapse due to sheer greed and ineptitude should not be bailed out. What lesson is being learned here? Truly free markets are not sustainable, and NEVER have been. Greed always takes over, and leads to poor decison-making and, without fail, financial collapse, which in turn leads us back to more regulation and government oversight. Why not just keep the regulation the whole effing time? Greedy politicians who get big bucks from big business to get rid of all those pesky regulators. That's why. In our lifetimes, I doubt this cycle will change.

People are so dumb. "TV's" as you all refer to them are really just monitors, with different video inputs, user inputs, and resolutions. I can already plug my computer into my HDTV and do whatever i want, and it shows up on-screen in glorious 1300x768 HD. I don't think this is the question that is to be answered anyway. The question is will Web "programming" ever overtake TV "programming". And the answer is.......Yes. Someday. The question doesn't require an answer as to when. It won't happen while your Grandma Millie is still around, but it will happen. Competition will necessitate it. Computers (and the internet) will be ubiquitous. So yes, a week and a half from now, probably even next year we'll all be sitting around the TV to watch the Super Bowl (if you're into that sort of thing). But 20 years from now? Are you kidding? The TV will go the way of the telephone: it will be either "cellular" or "TVoip". How many people do you know with landline telephones? Now, about how many of those people are under the age of 30? Probably not many. Now, who are the jerks who rated this guy's post as "Insightful?" There was more insight in the mess I left in the toilet bowl this morning.

this is dumb. don't report the wapo's case as fact. they were no obscene comments, and while there was a lot of opposition to the ombudsman's original article, it was mostly factual opposition. For instance, many pointed out the Post's lack of attention to detail by noting that Abramoff did NOT give any money directly to democrats. The Post is making the assumption that Abramoff clients were giving money to democrats because Jack asked them to. They say they have proof, but they have yet to publish it. What are they waiting for? The ombudsman's job is essentially to have a dialogue with the readers of the washington post. She has not only failed, but neglected to even try. This post gives a slanted view of the issue, and should be updated/corrected.
