You're absolutely right that forming opinions on all the people of a country based on a movie is wrong. And I didn't do that. I think what I was trying to say was that the movie gave a little reality check of some utopian ideas that some people tend to have about Scandinavian countries. I think a lot of people tend to idealize those countries as Meccas of openness, tolerance, and understanding, (a perfect paradise of liberal ideas) and forget that humans are humans wherever they are, and different cultures just have varying degrees and mixes of those qualities, just some are better than others, but none are 100% one way or the other.
No problem. I didn't mean to imply that you were looking to be with people of the same color. I was just trying to illustrate that I think that a culture with a lot of blending of races would generally be bound to not be as conflicted about race as some countries are.
I know, I was shocked about those soccer stories in Europe too - unbelievable. As far as Japan, I've also read comments here on Slashdot that there's a lot of racism (or perhaps xenophobia instead) there. I think your best solution would be to visit a few candidate countries and observe for yourself how people treat you and others in minorities there. I hope you keep Brazil in your list because I think you would like it there. Good luck in your search!
I would say look for a place that is very racially mixed to begin with, and good racial relations will probably come along with it. Read up on Brazil. There might be other places that fit the bill, and I know that it's not in Europe, and it's a developing country, but it generally has better race relations than the US. It's also not as corrupt and messed up as most of Africa, and it's a major economy (9th largest in the World if I'm not mistaken).
I also saw in a BBC documentary that in many ways old African customs (music, dance, food, religion, etc) is better preserved in Brazil than in African countries themselves. It isn't the racial utopia that it is sometimes portrayed as being, but it is very racially mixed (much more so than the US), and I think it's significantly better than the US in racial matters, particularly in daily interactions among people.
At least go visit if you ever have a chance - I would recommend the state of Bahia and the city of Salvador (the capital of the state, and former national capital), because that's the center of African culture in Brazil, and a beautiful colonial city. But the country in general has a wonderful mix of European, African, Indigenous, American, Asian, and all other peoples and cultures.
Regarding Scandinavian countries, in the past I would have said that they would be cool too, but seeing this movie (it's called The Celebration in the US, and it shows on IFC once in a while) it kind of gave me a different perspective on racial relations there (at least in Denmark).
Working at a Fortune 50 (yes, with just one zero) company here. We still have some workstations and servers on Windows 2000. But we're about to upgrade them to XP and 2003.
I was wondering if BK still offered the veggie burgers, after I found out McDonalds nixed theirs. I also didn't know that Wendy's has them (we don't have A&W or Harvey's here). Thanks!
I'm no expert at this, but hang out in certain audio/video boards and read professionals' opinions on this (and stayed at a Holiday Inn last night). The common advice is to get an external audio interface that hooks to your computer via USB 2.0 or Firewire. The reason for this is that the electronic environment inside the PC case is extremely noisy (RF interference) making it almost impossible to get really clean audio if the analog audio circuitry is in there. That's why any professional audio card you see is usually external. I have seen M-Audio and motu recommended too. Oh, and what someone said about noise-free environment (quiet room) and correct microphone are also very important.
By the way, I imagine you'll probably find a better selection (and prices) of these interfaces at your local Guitar Center or discount music superstore than at your regular computer parts store.
That goes along with a couple of other weird name/profession matches that I have heard about: My dad's dentist when he was a kid was "Mr. Molar", and the school where my wife was an after-school program mentor for a while had a shop teacher, "Mr. Wood". This is all 100% for real. Again, too funny.
Ah, true then. I always find it easier to spend that kind of money on hardware than on games though. It doesn't sting as much because you get this elaborate physical thing that you can tell was costly to make. True, games cost a lot to make too, but it's not the same feeling trading your $50/$60 for a plain plastic disc.
The part where they say that a Wii-mote AND a nunchuck will be included in the base package! So there's no need to worry about developers not using the features.
Haha, you're right! The news channel video is even more jittery. I'll still buy one too. I hope it's just a case of settings or conditions being wrong, because the difference between the videos is pretty striking. Maybe they made the videos earlier on and have since improved it?
Whoa! Wii to be Region-Free!

I think this will be huge. Supposedly developers will have the ability to make their games have a region lock if they want, but it seems like it won't be used by Nintendo themselves.
We must be watching different videos. I've only seen the weather and the main menu videos so far (they're kind of slow to load right now), but I'm impressed with how smooth the pointer is!
PC's are becoming a niche market - for MMORPG's. Everything else to this point seems better fit for a console.
I'm sure there will be a ton of replies to mention that FPS and RTS games are also still better suited for PCs, because of the controllers. However this could quickly change if the Wii's controller does the job well.
I took a personal finance class at a local community college and the professor (who also teaches two investing classes) is a professional financial consustant, both for individuals and for companies or other organizations (pension funds, etc). He seems to be very well off. He said he taught these classes (only a couple of nights a week) because he would always learn something new from the students (cool new websites or whatever), and because he got a great deal on health insurance for doing it! He's a total money geek - heck, maybe he even reads Slashdot.
Weird, I had posted another reply to your original message thanking you for your post, but I guess I must not have hit the submit button. Anyway, it was just thanking you for an encouraging post for a CSS beginner after seeing so many posts complaining about CSS.
I would love to play/own this game since I first heard about it, but after reading the horror stories about Starforce and what it does, I just couldn't do it. It's very unfortunate...
that just as easily as they can come up with fingerprints for TV sounds to identify what you were watching, they could also come up with fingerprints for words that someone speaks, and just as easily send that data over. This is just way creepy. When I first read it I wondered if something had gone awry and an old April fool's day story got posted late on Slashdot.
The government deadline that we keep hearing about is not to convert to HDTV - it is just for conversion from analog to digital broadcasts. Most over the air TV broadcasters already have this up to speed, and from what I understand, most of them are using their bandwidth to broadcast something like 4 standard definition channels over the same space of 1 HD channel (this is a choice they have and apparently only a few are choosing to broadcast HD).
In other words, all that is needed is a digital TV tuner set top box, not a whole new HDTV.
This is an interesting story of a guy's experience setting up a Tivo to record over the air digital broadcasts:

That would be awesome! But I'm sure the FCC would censor all that pr0n...

Exactly. These are kids that probably wouldn't get any exercise otherwise.

Wii to be region-free
This thing is starting to look like it has all the ingredients to be a big success.

Do you have a link or more info on this non-semantic div fix for IE's box model? Thanks again!

I will buy this game when it doesn't have something like Starforce.

The OP says that they only need to keep the CDs/DVDs for several months. I think they'll be pretty safe in that time span.
