Uhm - does he have auto pilot on or anything during that time?
The site is dying on me at the moment, but wouldn't he lose focus during that time? (Search on google for "How long can the human body stay awake" leads to this SciAm article.)
have the Chinese or the Indians build that 'Son of Hubble' telescope that someone mentioned (I cannot find the linky at the moment)... as I recall, it could be done at around $50 million and would probably be better.
We outsource everything else to them anyway, why not our manned missions?
I was just looking at that article, and was playing around with the numbers too...
I was wondering more about the image presented in the article here that showed the objects orbit and Earth's. It seems to me that this thing will pass very close by the orbit of Venus, which makes me wonder - do astronomer's also include the possible pull of Venus' gravity on this astroid as they do the calculations of the astroid's orbit? I assume so, but I was wondering how exactly do that factor that in?
Crazy, I was just checking my bookmark on this when the slashdot article popped up. Anyways..
Here is the wikipedia page explaining the Torino Scale. I still wouldn't worry about it until the thing hit at least a 8 or so. The article gives a nice explanation of what astronomers would do in warning the governments in the event they thought this thing deserved any real attention.
We had a discussion on this in US History class - if you want a situation in history that mirrors where we're at now, go look at the rise of the Republican party in the 1920s.
Take a look at how their rule finally ended. (Hint: Black Tuesday).
I thought that was common, though. Isn't it common for parts of bills that would normally get shot down in Congress often sneaked in by being attached to other parts of bills? I forget the term used to describe them, but I was under the impression it was common (though it may be etched out after the bill is debated).
Oddly enough, I had the same problem with the previous release of Firefox, but it disappeared with the new one.. not sure if that will solve your problem, though.
"and warns that they "may" use their searching technology on it. "
Actually, I noticed that the other day while using gmail. My cousin had mailed me a personal letter detailing a health problem my aunt has and how they had been to several doctors to figure out the problem... lo and behold, to the right of my email in gmail, there is a text advert for listings of doctors and other health-related adverts. Go figure.
Got me thinking about what really google will do with your emails.
On the note about the whole making the Icon look like the real thing... uhm guys, can't you do this just as easy as in Windows?

From that page: "Dangerous Commands That Can Be Embedded
PIF Shortcut Extensions
Some hidden file extensions can easily be programmed with hidden commands that could do damage to your system. Following is a simple test:
1.
Right click your mouse on your desktop and select New
and then ShortCut
2.
In the command line type: format a:/autotest
3.
Click Next
4.
In the "Select a name for the shortcut" area type: readme.txt
5.
Click Next
6.
Select a notepad icon and click Finish
You now have a file on your desktop called readme.txt with a notepad icon. Make sure there is a disk in your drive that you do not mind being wiped and click on the icon. The file that you click on will do a format on the disk in the A: drive. Of course, the hacker's icon would target another drive, or maybe have a name such as 'game.exe' and with a command to delete your Windows directory or (deltree/y c:\*.*) your entire C drive!
If the PIF extension were not hidden, this would not be able to fool you."
Or, you could also do the following:
"SHS Extensions
Scrap files can also hide embedded commands. Following is a simple test:
1.
Make a copy of notepad.exe and put it on your desktop.
2.
Open Wordpad
3.
Click and drag notepad.exe into the open wordpad document.
4.
Click on Edit and select Package Object, then select Edit Package
5.
Click on Edit and then Command Line
6.
Type a command in the box such as format a:/autotest and click on Ok
7.
The Icon can also be changed from this edit window
8.
Exit from the edit window and it will update the document
9.
Click and drag notepad back to the desktop
10.
Rename the file that it created (Scrap) to Readme.txt
You now have what will look like a text file. If it is run it will format the disk in the A: drive. As seen in the example above for PIF Shortcut Extensions, the hacker could use more dangerous commands."
Various other types of info available there. Enjoy.
Ah, I should have checked the comments before posting my own comment. My bad.

I was wondering about that. When *did* jpg come out?
Or could it be that for all intents and purposes that was the first image, just in JPEG format?
C'mon folks, seriously. It's not even off of the front page yet.
feel that we just need to kill off NASA right now?
I mean.. its just sad. It really is, the way it's going these days. From the hubble to the ISS, it's just not right.
Amazing how this post has always made it into any thread talking about the moon.
Search slashdot to see the same post in almost every thread discussing the moon or space.
Hope you don't mind, but I copied and pasted your comment to google using the feedback form on the http://maps.google.com page.
Thought I'd just go ahead and give them some more things to work on.
Mod parent up. I'm a bit confused myself.
A quick search on google brings up this page. Also on Wikipedia.
Any med geeks out there who could shed light on this?

Whatever happened to the idea of putting a telescope on the moon?

Not exactly what you want, but close.
Today I noticed that hotmail finally added the 250 Megs they promised me for my hotmail account - anyone else think the timing is quite interesting?
And has anyone else noticed the added 250 megs in their hotmail accounts?
The beast looks pretty good so far - I've played around with it and found the results to be very similiar to google.
Anyone want to give their own quick reviews of the site? Despite the fact that it's from microsoft, I admit it seems a decent enough engine.

Well, if you download it and do Help -> About Mozilla Firefox, it says the version is 0.8.0+
So really its still 0.8, I suppose, they're just releasing it as a preview for testing before they call it 0.9 (I think.)
Uhmm.. dude, you've never played the Age of Empires campagins? You can relive the senarios for like William Wallace, Genghis Khan, El Cid, etc.
Pretty fun actually, and they do include a bit of info on medieval warfare.
