Although there might be an issue of contributory infringement to worry about
how do i know the person im dowloading from lives in canada or somewhere else where sharing is illegal? a typical user wouldn't know this information or how to find it, they would just download
when IM first became popular and ICQ was the only major one, i used it and there were never any problems, now everyone i know uses something different it just gets to be a big hastle...
well, if there is no proper supervision it could lead to problems rather than improve learning. my accounting class was in a computer room, all we used to do is play multiplayer shockwave games and hearts
I don't know about this new mplayer on Windows, but the 0.9 at least was very slow on my computer. On FreeBSD it works fine.
make sure you minimize the command prompt window, window has trouble updating the time status constantly (or disable it somehow) otherwise it will be very choppy.
when i do this, divx movies are just barely playable (takes 90% of my celeron 733) in windows 98 SE
Of course, SCO/Caldera being an American company trying to enforce claims in a foreign country that doesn't (yet) have software patents might be partially why.
huh? IBM breached a contract and included some of SCO's code in the Linux source code (at least this is what SCO is claiming). This has nothing to do with patents.
'The European Parliament has delayed voting on a controversial software-patents directive
hmm, well I as long as the voting is delayed, european software patents wont exist, also this will help more people become aware of the situation and hopefully gain more opposition.
They, call center's in India, are even teaching their employees to talk with various American accents, and the call center employees take a new American name for their job.
Oh yes definitely, i heard about this myself. Not only American, they teach some to talk in British accent (and my guess is accents from other places too).
For one choice only, I would choose mozilla ie. the XUL toolkit.
Yes I use icewm too:)
But XUL is a terrible choice, it has very high latency on slower processors, eg, celeron II 700. You may have Athlon XP or P4 so the difference is negligible, but not for me. I will never use mozilla until they fix this. There is a delay when opening up windows or popping down menus that you can actually see the widgets being created.
i believe the reason why mozilla, firebird, etc are slow is because they use XUL ui, which is slow. They want firebird to be faster but they won't save much more than memory if they don't hit the core of the problem.
You seem to be misinterpreting what he meant, as you left out the word software.
ahh, you are right, my mistake... i didn't see the word software
i did have SB PCI, and everything seemed to be software, even the bass/treble controls,
NOT in Emu10k1 though, everything is done via the ac3 chip... not via software,... he may think this because the dsp effects/tone controls can only be applied to one source, that's because only one analog source can be routed through to the ac3 chip at a time, this is because of some ac3 standard i believe...
if he thinks that this is software, he is just mistaken even more...
Such sound distortions are not desired by the audiophile or professional community. Additionally, there are plugins for XMMS that can do anything you can do with Creative's drivers, like chorus, reverb (see Freeverb), echo, etc.
fyi, it's not called distortions, it's called DSP... big difference:)
and yes, like i said not everyone wants it or cares about it.... that doesn't change the fact that it is a feature that is not supported by the linux drivers, this alone isn't a reason to not implement it.. that would be like saying, "nobody uses midi, we won't put [much] effort into implementing support in the drivers" (people do use midi im just saying this to make a point)
and yes, if you just want simple effects xmms plugins are fine, but these do not give the same effects that you can get via the emu10k1 processor...
i know what you are thinking, "hardware, software, whats the difference?" the difference is the chip is so versatile, if you open up the EAX control and tweak the internal features you will see how complex it is...
if there was an xmms plugin that could do the same, sure that would be sufficient, but nothing comes blatently close.... i guess like you said, the general population don't want extra features....
I'm just not certain how one would benefit by "ruining" MP3s with some form of EAX effects. Just what do you use it for? EAX is most useful (in my opinion) for gaming.
i just like messing around with it, for fun, it doesn't ruin it, it just gives the sound an effect which i occasionally like, also sometimes i like using effects like this for watching movies to give it a 'theater-like' sound...
but yes it is very useful for gaming, but i dont think EAX will come to linux though, it will just be openAL....
Then buy another card or get different drivers. A lot of those "features" that you get in Windows are useless Creative Labs software effects and things.
you are kidding right? im not going to buy another card just so it works with linux..
this is quite wrong, just because these features are useless to you, doesnt mean it is to everyone...
but I've got totally different experiences
probably card dependant, and yes OSS mixer is cleaner..
As for EAX, such things exist in Linux. They just aren't used because nobody cares at this moment.
oh dear you are misinformed....
first of all, you are again assuming things, i use EAX just to listen to mp3's in windows.... i would do such things in linux too.. it doesn't need software support... the live drivers in win32 support it directly....
the openAL is i believe software only, (not supported by my live hardware), so my guess is it will only work with software that use it...
the OSS drivers support is only for dsp effects, it is a pain to enable (requires weird command line options) and nevertheless it is *not* EAX..
Well, i'm sorry but i found sound drivers is the one thing that can't be matched in linux.
Sure older cards such as the Creative AWE32 can be easily matched, but newer cards are much more complex.
My Live 5.1 has about 50 mixer controls with alsa drivers (most of them dont do anything), so it can be very inconvenient at times. The routing to the ac97/i2s output is very messy in linux. In windows i can easily select 'microphone' as recording input, and it will route it to ac97 and mute i2s. In linux i must set it as recording device, set the microphone volume to 0 (to mute i2s) and then raise the 'igain' volume, if that isn't logical i don't know what is. Sometimes the best drivers are the ones created by the manufacturer, unfortunately Creative's work on their drivers have been limited (and only for OSS).
Also such 'extra' features like EAX is not to be even talked about.
I'm not sure of experiences with other modern sound cards, but mine with the live 5.1 is poor.
This makes me wonder, i recently bought a pack of 20 AA batteries by a small unknown company (can be misleading since the package looks and the name sounds like it is duracell) at a dollar store (yes!!! 20 AA batteries for $1 CDN)... seems to work fine in my remote control, but im a little worried now
It's times like this i feel relieved i live in Canada.
Now i'm not sure if the RIAA can launch legal action against Canadians (IANAL, although I believe they can't), but even if they can I'm pretty sure they have enough to do in America as it is...
Professional Graphics Cards are sort of an oddity to us here at HotHardware.com. Admittedly, we don't get to tinker enough in this area, since frankly the market that is served by these products is a specialty niche, where there just isn't the same level of Marketing buzz, as in the Consumer Graphics space.
You are certainly right, no need to capitalize 'Graphics Cards', nor 'Consumer Graphics', nor 'Marketing buzz'. It's pretty bad throughout. For some reason my respect for this article has dropped because of this. If it was one or two silly mistakes it's ok but this is quite a lot of false capitalization.
Some great comments. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to understand the "free as in speech" of "free software":
"You see, I'm not in this just to get free software. No. 1, I don't think there's any such thing as free software. I think there's a cost in implementing all of it."
Maybe he doesn't, why should he have to though? In this article he is talking 'free' as in beer, not as in speech. Some people say 'free software' means 'free as in speech', this doesnt mean everyone else has to as well. It has a dual meaning, and just depends on what context you use it in.
hmm, where is the high resolution (1000x540) trailer like they had for reloaded that half the/. readers' had trouble playing because of the very high CPU usage;)
Redundant -- Redundant posts are ones which add no new information, but instead take up space with repeating information either in the Slashdot post, the attached links, or lots of previous comments. For instance, some posters cut and paste otherwise legitimate comments in multiple places in the same discussion; the pasted versions are Redundant.
redundant doesn't mean the post is wrong, just that it is repetetive and useless...
does it have a greater affect if said 100 times?.... not really.... anyways this is needed otherwise people could just cut-n-paste and 'rack up' karma...
What about sound cards? These should be discussed more than anything since most benchmarks are useless... They usually compare latency, which is possible the worst way to compare sound cards... and also midi features and surround features, which many people dont even use.. and 3d quality, which is required in a test, but not the main aspect
what they should compare the most is the sound quality, this i find very lacking in sound card benchmarks... such things as Signal/Noise ratio, frequency response, bass/treble controls, etc...
pcavtech does a good job of this, too bad more sites don't do something like this..
but the site did get the right point, speed is not everything, quality counts for much..

i think ill stick to email and IRC
he would be better placed in a movie such as 'spaceballs 2' as lord darkhelmet's nemesis.
And in other news, failure to regularly exchange carbon dioxide with oxygen frequently results in death to animals and people!
i think the point they were trying to make were not that people die when there is an accident, but the number of people is quite large
would be neat if we could take the times square video, and set it as desktop background :)

Debian/Gentoo vs. Redhat/Suse/Mandrake.
wouldn't it be:
Debian/Gentoo/Slackware vs. Redhat/Suse/Mandrake
Slackware is a major player, and many people still use it.
