A phase change air conditioner doesnt "create" energy - it merely moves it around. It's like a 10000L petrol tanker only needing 100L of fuel to drive around.

The process for air conditioners is that cooling might be around 300% efficient (you pump 3 times the energy you consume), and heating is around 400% efficient (you pump 3 times, plus the consumed energy adds to the heat load).

What I dont understand is that they "save daylight" during summer, when there's an abundance of extra sun. I dont see the point.

It would be more practical during winter when it gets dark so early that people cant play outdoor sports etc (assuming its not too cold).

    Yeah, I agree.

Here in Australia many of the states have DST, making it light until 9:00 - 9:30pm at night during summer! What is the need for this?

Im in Western Australia and we thankfully dont have DST. It works fine.

If you need a special clock to tell you when you can stay outside longer, then you've got bigger problems than "saving daylight" - you'd better start looking after your few remaining braincells.

Not really. People will just buy a cheap DVB set-top-box. Here in Australia we have a similar deadline looming and standard definition STB's are gettting down to A$70 (around US$50).

It's the high definition decoders that are annoyingly expensive, and it's not worth going to standard definition prematurely as there is no clear benefit.

  19. Re:Insulation on Liquid Hydrogen UAV · · Score: 2, Informative

    Easy.

You let some of the liquid hydrogen evaporate (called boil off gas) - that draws thermal energy from the remaining liquid like an evaporative cooler. You can then consume that boil off gas in your turbines/fuel cell/whatever.

This method is commonly used on LPG tankers.
