  1. Bundling always seemed bad to me on FCC Rules Telcos Need Not Provide Naked DSL · · Score: 4, Interesting

Take cable television. I'd prefer not to waste my money on the 50 garbage channels and just pay for the several I actually watch. However, I have to pay for packages instead of an al la carte scheme.

As for telephone service. I don't have a land line. I have a cell phone and internet from my cable provider. If my internet came from Verizon through DSL, I could be forced to buy a service just to have internet.

I don't know how much the government should regulate businesses like this, but if you only have one broadband provider in your area and they want to hit you up for more services than you want, there's not much you can do about it.

Take a look around. You either get a good method for a few outdated packages, or you get a great system that takes forever to compile packages. Obviously, I haven't dealt much with debian based distros and their magical apt-get, but the major distros like Suse, mandrake, and fedora are still RPM based. I think RPMs have really slowed down linux adoption due to dependency hell. I hope systems like autopackage can help things out.

  9. Re:the 'good enough' argument on Java Fallout: OO.o 2.0 and the FOSS Community · · Score: 1

I was thinking on similar lines. I think OO.o is a good product and I can use it without having to spend any money. If Sun wants to use F/OSS Openoffice to help distribute the free but close source java then I can understand it. I think that's why they're doing this in the first place. Java doesn't have any license fees and it's not difficult to install on windows or linux so I don't see the big deal. I think that by them doing this and spreading Java is better than Microsoft doing similar tactics to spread .NET.

There's no free lunch when it comes to a corporation trying to make money. So if all I have to put up with is using java for this pretty damn good office suite, I'll accept it.

I'm sure they did that purely out of license issues. I'm not saying ogg is bad, I'm saying that these little mp3 players are not tiny computers running mplayer. I say that because people act as if adding ogg support is trivial. These embedded devices use custom built chips to play the mp3's and wma's and adding another format on would be expensive compared to the increased sales from ogg users.

I'm sorry, but I really don't understand why you brought up the fact that a game that uses all the resources of a computer is using an audio format that they could simply drop in.

Nobody wants to lose their job because they "gambled on an open source alternative and lost". It's going to take more court wins to substantiate the GPL and dismantle the threat of patents that have no basis. This is a smart move on the part of those who do not wish an "open source revolution".

I'm all for open source, but I can understand how companies are afraid to risk backing it if it means it could end up costing them more later. And sadly, I feel this can slow down adoption of open source software. But for companies with good lawyers who can see past the FUD and who take the risk and use OSS, I hope they are successful because they are paving the way for others.

However, if you are sure you didn't do anything wrong, then fight it. Using bittorrent to download linux ISOs is not illegal or immoral and many people will back you up.

Let me just reiterate my first point, if you used bittorrent to download anything you shouldn't have, don't bring other people into it because you'll make them and yourself look like idiots. This will also set a bad precedent for somebody trying to fight a bogus "p2p charge".
