    Extortionists.

You get the code, look for flaws, write a program that exploits the flaws, and say "Hey Microsoft, give us $50,000 or we'll release this new virus that will wipe out every computer running Windows 2000 that's connected to the Internet."

Now that's assuming such a security flaw could exist...and at this point wouldn't surprise a lot of people around here.

I doubt business rivals would care much because their only competition right now (wrt Windows 2000) seems to be from people in the open source community. You DO NOT want leaked code appearing in OSS.

When I was in high school, I also felt I knew a lot about computers. Now I realize I knew shit. I still believe I still know shit, just a lot more shit than I used to.

One of the main reasons for college is to teach you how to learn. High school won't do that, so they make college a requirement because you'll keep building on that.

I'm not saying college is required or you won't do well if you don't go to college. Certainly not, but there are benefits to college besides what your teacher tests you on.

That's exactly why I got a desktop replacement laptop. I own a dell inspiron 8200 I bought over 2 years ago. It's fast and I can use it at college and bring it home without a hassle. It's big, heavy, and a shitty batter life, but I always keep it plugged in anyway so I don't care. I also don't have that much room at school, so it fits nicely on my small desk. It's also got a UXGA 1600x1200 screen that is beautiful.

There is definitely a niche for people who want a fast computer, want to travel with it, but don't need to use it off the battery much. I think this niche will eventually grow to exceed desktops as laptops are becoming faster and cheaper.

  14. Cool stuff on China's Superior Technologies · · Score: 4, Insightful

They have some cool ideas in China. The Styrofoam in the super markets might not work in the US because people might find it unsanitary. I like the traffic light idea and I've always thought about the system of identifying free parking spots every time I'm hunting for one in a large, crowded lot.

However, some of these seem great because they didn't have to replace old technology. They mentioned how landlines were never popular, so they went from no phones straight to cell phones. The US had to piggy back the new system on the old system.

So in 20 years, will they still be cutting edge, or will they be surpassed by other countries that either are just technologically developing or have been developed for a while and are "upgrading".

Photoshop 7 works fine using Crossover. Photoshop 8 does not, but there are little enhancements between the two versions.

I have mixed feelings about trying to make windows software "wine-compatible." On one hand, it gives them a much cheaper method of essentially porting their software to another environment. However, it gives them no incentive to make a true Linux version.

I've used software in Crossover Office, and while it generally works well, it still seems very flaky and slow.

I use open office whenever I create a document, but I still need office to open some documents. And I need to use Orcad PSpice for school work, I'm grateful that works in Crossover.

The reason this should concern liberal who truly believe in their cause is because the next election could sway to the republican's side for no reason. Say for example John Kerry is elected president tomorrow and does a horrible job. Some crazy right wing candidate pops up and suddenly it's cool to vote for him. The liberals would then go nuts trying to figure out why suddenly everyone wants to vote for a guy who's "not John Kerry". Maybe then they'd understand our frustrations.

I know this because when I hear other people discuss politics, Kerry supporters can't base anything they say up with facts. Bush supporters actually know what they're talking about.

This is not a criticism on Kerry, just the young trendy ignorant tools voting for Kerry without having formed an opinion. I wouldn't mind people voting for Kerry if they actually knew what is going on in this world and based their opinion on that. It's amazing how many people think "Bush is an evil warmonger!" is can win an argument.

I can't wait when tomorrow' election is over because I am so sick of politics at this point.
