I just find it mildly funny (and interesting) that a Picard reference can be taken seriously.. only on slashdot though. I guess I forgot to mention in the original post that I, although I don't really want to admit it, did take the post seriously.
So do those X10 camera ads still exist? I know they used to annoy the heck out of me, but it's been at least 2 years since I've seen one of those ads. I hope they don't come back.
These former "IT Professionals" sound like products of the certificate mills. Everyone knows that a true programmer (geek) could never switch to marketing. We don't like talking to people. Heck, we don't like people.
How did this get modded as interesting? I've only heard of the index being stored in RAM. It seems unlikely that all X billion pages in the google cache are in RAM.
What I do, so I get my mail at work and home, is have my client at home leave a copy on the server for 5 days. All of the other clients I use (work, laptop, etc) will just download the mail and not delete.
This works out well because all of my mail clients will download alll of the messages, and I can use the webmail interface to see messages from the past 5 days in case I'm not at one of my computers.
My point was that the article is about a service for getting legit games. Anyone can find pirated software. I don't see how that could be modded up as interesting for such a story.
Yeah, but service mentioned in the article is for people who want to have legit, non-warez software. Anyone can find warez, especially now with all of the bittorrent sites around.
I'm only replying because someone modded this as interesting. I'm pretty sure the parent was trying to be funny, but some dumbass mod thought it was interesting.
You really liked ROTK game better than Two Towers? Man, I absolutely loved Two Towers -- the controls are tight, it's just so much fun beating up on orcs and learning the new combos. That made me buy ROTK because I thought it would be the same engine as TT but with new content, but there's just something about ROTK that I don't like. It's hard to put my finger on it, but it just isn't as much fun -- it doesn't play the same.
Btw, I'm talking about the GameCube versions. Maybe the PS2/XBox versions are better.. who knows.
But then again, there are a lot of time limited software demos, and I don't suppose that anyone tries to hack those...
You're kidding, right? Go run a search here for any semi well-known piece of software that stops working after 30 days. There's most likely a crack for it.
Very unlikely the unannounced title will disappear.
They're talking about Sigil's game. The original creator of EverQuest and a bunch of people that worked on EQ created a company to create a MMORPG due probably around 2006.
I'll have to agree. I have an old laptop that only has 128MB of RAM (can't upgrade anymore). I've fiddled with all of the settings and services and can only get it down to using about 68MB of memory.
That's fine for a system with 128MB of ram.. a web browser or two and an email client without massive swapping but I can't see it working well with just 64MB ram.
Btw, xp was using 122MB of ram after a clean reboot right after the installation. It's amazing how many useless services (and exploitable ones) are enabled by default in XP.
You think the Chinese have it bad... I can only get to slashdot at work from 11:30 - 12:30! In the US even!
Are you hiring? :)

Only on slashdot can someone reference a quote by Picard and everyone takes the poster seriously.
Not any more! I just love being able to edit reference material on the fly.
i, j, k, l, m, n, and o for me. I find i'm always writing innner-inner-inner-inner-inner-inner loops.
...not really expecting someone to analize[sic] it, or even try it...
You're new here, aren't you?
...thank the Gods for Firefox...
Been watching a bit too much Battlestar Galactica, eh? I hope this doesn't turn into a popular phrase.

question: why are you building your house out of straw?
You get to sleep in until 8? I hate you.
yes

Consoles don't need to be upgraded
Well, if we keep getting crappy ports of console games to PC, then we won't have to worry about upgrading our PCs.

There's also a few perks, like lots of good looking women on campus all the time...
BUT, have you ever talked to any of these good looking women?
Government job I assume?

"I envision a programming language that is a notch richer then OO"
I was enjoying the article up to this point, but then I lost total respect for her.
