We're going to have a brain drain if we continue living in the past, which is what this administration seems to want. It's not about innovation and leadership, it's about taking our ball and going home.. and then the rich kid down the block taking your ball and locking it away in his private gymnasium.

Income inequality is getting worse, that is not a good sign for a developed economy. I have yet to see any concrete plans to create well paying jobs. $15/hr manufacturing jobs aren't going to strengthen the middle class.

Now I'm not saying the planet will be inhabitable from a climate perspective, I'm saying the greed of the right is going to turn this country into a shithole for most citizens in a few decades.

UBI absolutely does something to help address mental health. I get it, work is work and isn't always enjoyable.. but I think if everyone has that basic income they might be more willing to take less money for a job they actually enjoy. You're always going to have the "go getters" and you're going to have those that work hard simply to make ends meet.. it's that second category that really drains overall quality of life.

I'm in corporate America.. I like the company I work for but not that thrilled with my current role. I would rather spend more of my time working for non-profits that benefit the "greater good" but know I would take a huge salary hit. It's not a choice that is easy to make especially having a young child that we're raising and want the best for. With a UBI, making a choice to take a more satisfying job would be a much easier choice.

Does it really matter if the top 10% earners get just a little more salary because of UBI? Drop in the bucket for them. If someone uses their UBI for drugs.. well, it's already that way now. Maybe we could fix our draconian drug laws to encourage responsible drug use of those that are on the safer, more natural side.

As someone who lives in rural America, most people here don't realize how much Federal aid comes our way. They just assume that because our taxes are lower than urban areas, it means our costs are lower and that we more wisely use the tax revenue. In fact, we probably (making an assumption without citation) receive more federal money per capita than urban areas. More roads, more utilities, more police, more fire are needed to provide the same service in my town of 25k that is spread out over approximately 12 sq. miles (31 sq. km).

Education level does not matter, life experience matters. Most people here have never spent more than a week or two (vacations) away from the region and have certainly not traveled to other countries. They don't know the benefits of urban living and don't care to learn about them. It's different from their life and they'd rather be ignorant about it.

The other months they are either collecting unemployment or having to find some temporary job to make ends meet. The point is, their income fluctuates. With UBI, they would at least know during those down months they'd receive $x/month and could plan around that.

When you look at implementing UBI, you must also look at what can go away. Half of Americans probably receive significant government assistance already. Now you get rid of food stamps, extended unemployment benefits, lower other programs like medicare.. if you do it right, with the amount of waste in most governments, you can probably do it without raising additional funds.

I'd love to dive into the financials to see how it would work here in the states.
