VW is the German equivilent to Chevy. They may look good for a couple years but the cars fall apart very quickly. VW has been at or near the bottom in all quality/satisfaction ratings in the US for a number of years. Sure, there are those who love the brand but I know far more people who have ditched the brand in the past 15 years... and to top it off their new styling look like old Saturns.
I'm in the automotive industry. We currently use a German company for 9 speed ATs. They are among the biggest piles of shit I have ever seen. My previous car had one, it was embarassing to drive and completely ruined the experience. Luckily the relationship will only last a couple more years until a better one is developed in-house and build in our own plants. Point being, German companies have been living off their reputation for far too long. There is nothing superior about German engineering these days.
We have machines that act very similar to your description except the paper copy is spooled through a view window and remains inside the machine. After finishing the touch-screen voting it will print and scroll vote by vote for visual verification.
A couple things that I don't like:
1. It's a Diebold machine (not a stellar reputation)
2. I have no clue what happens if I disagree with the printed ballot since it's all internal
3. One year the paper roll was jammed in the machine. I told the poll workers but they didn't seem to care. Who knows how many paper ballots were printed on top of each other...
I don't like the machines. Eventually we'll get one that is trustworthy.. but not until capitalism has run its course.
Fuyao (they do automotive glass, possibly other stuff) opened up a production facility near by at a former Delphi location.
An aquaintence quit her job and began working there in quality control. She said the Chinese management staff is going to drive that place into the ground, they don't understand American workers are not going to put up with the same abuse factory workers in China occasionally face.
I former co-worker told me a story from his first week in a union shop (he was non-union). Walking the floor, he noticed a screw was a bit loose on a panel, so he grabbed a screw driver to fix it. He got yelled out because maintenance was a union responsibility. Two weeks later, the screw was still loose.
I'm not anti-union. I'm anti-dumbassness. The reason so many people are tired of unions is because shit like this. The desire to work to make the company successful is completely gone in union shops, it's just show up, do the bare minimum and collect a paycheck. (not saying this about all unions, but UAW is notoriously bad).
I'm suprised these companies have not sued convicted murders for damaged due to them eliminating one source of revenue stream from society. On top of that, they basically remove themselves as a functioning member of society so that is two revenue streams gone.
I had a similar experience. Bought a decent HP wireless printer but the cartridges went bad before I could even finish the ones that came with the printer. I cannot justify buying new ones for the very limited amount of printing I do. It's just an 8lb paperweight now.. or something for my 2 year old to play around with.
Last summer we kept our house at 78F (about 25C) but it was relatively dry. This summer we dropped it down to 74F due to an extremely wet June/early July just to get the moisture out of the air.
At work it is similar, I'm in a large open office area. Even if the temperature is reading 72F, you can feel immediately if it stops working because the humidity creeps up. It can get uncomfortable quickly in business casual dress. Of course there are a few women who constantly complain they are cold, walk around wrapped in blankets and wearing gloves with the finger tips cut off.. but overall it's not too bad.
That just would not work in most cases. There is a simple reason the Google car was stopped, it was not safe for it to proceed forward. Either another car was directly in front or it was an intersection with traffic coming from 90 degree angles.
While you are probably correct, I am sure there is much more to the story.
Do we know if the current situation is even efficient? That $2mil might be to upgrade all the systems enough that it will save $100k/yr in more efficient operation.
If you think about how long they have milked the current system, maybe they do well with their budgets.. just not enough info to decide if $2mil is wasteful.
Or ask why He saved Dick Chaney by killing someone else in order to harvest the organs but why He kills thousands of children with cancer every year.
I was debating with someone a few weeks ago. I ended the debate with "The Bible was written by man, it was translated by man, it has been copied by man, and it has been interpreted by man. How the hell can anyone believe it is the true word of God?"
With cockpit doors being locked now, it seems stupid to do anything to an airplane these days. Sure, you might get a few hundred casulties and the loss of a plane and possible some casulties on the ground.. there are far worse things they could do. Black Friday at a Wal-mart? Sporting events, train stations..
TSA is smoke and mirrors. 9/11 cannot be replicated.. even if they somehow breached the cockpit doors the crew and passengers will not sit idley by.
It needs to be a forumula that is based on miles driven AND weight of the car... unless Oregon actually believes that a Civic and a Big Rig cause the same amount of long term damage to a road.
Funny how the NFL officials only care about potential brain injury on players who are good at math. If the risk of brain injury was truly that high, nobody should be playing it.
I don't think that is their intent. Most of the players in the NFL do not have a second career to fall back on once their playing days are done, let alone one that should pay them a decent salary. The players themselves know the risks now but the alure of making millions of dollars for a few years of harsh physical punishment is seen as a worthy risk.
My post wasn't meant to be all inclusive, so that is my mistake. However from an early age they are taught "belief" over "question what you see" and this does lead many people to blindly accepting what they are given.
I agree with you, many of the religious people I know are great people.. most of my family is Catholic and we all got together 2 years ago to celebrate the wedding of my male cousin to his husband.
However, my experience is these same people lack critical thinking skills. They are taught their entire life to obey and therefor never question direction they are given. Sometimes they can be frustratingly naiive about current events.
Personally, I tread lightly when religion is being discussed except with my closest friends (some who are athiest, some who are some sort of Christian). Many times I don't feel it's worth the fight.. when someone will admit they are christian because that is how they were raised, there's almost no amount of "evidence" that could ever change their view.
Not as dumb as you, apparently. Indy car is a mix between oval and road courses.
If you want to bash racing, why not bash F1 where the competition is so limited that only a handful of drivers actually have a shot at winning each week. At least with Indy, the cars are somewhat equal and there's much more variety and excitment to the finish.
My car is not autonmous but it does have adaptive cruise control (will match speed of car in front, works all the way down to a crawl), lane keep technology (on the highway car will keep itself centered in driving lane), and collision mitigation (car will start to brake as well as set off all sorts of alarms). There are also sensors that can monitor just about the entire area around the car.
The technology mostly exists and can be found is most newer luxury models. The lane keep is probably going to be the most difficult as road markings are not consistent and who knows what the hell will happen in a contruction zone when lines are altered.
Conservative values in the US mean expecting more gov't services (suburban sprawl) when it's beneficial but pay less taxes.
Born, raised, and still live in the mid-west. I'd say my county is about 70% right leaning. I was a republican until my mid 20's, then I opened my eyes and thought about what exactly republicans actually want and it was just not logical.
Not that I'm a liberal.. I'm a little bit of everything I guess so it's hard for me to find someone to vote for because I can't stand candidates that toe the national party line. I believe in fiscal responsibility and social awareness. We'll keep on the downward spiral until someone fixes the public school system.
I have used a similar argument with some hard headed friends. I also throw in an extra bit to really make their heads spin:
If we reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, we no longer have to keep sending our young men and women to the middle east to get involved in fights that cannot be won. Isn't the best way to support our troops to go green?
Conservatives are more "rah rah" about the military and seemingly more "rah rah" about sending them off to fight.. I just don't understand why most military personelle vote Republican. I'd want a President and Congress that was going to keep me close to home and only use me if our actual sovereignty was threatened.

I don't think more /.ers are denying scientific consensus, I think most are denying the apocolypic projections that come from the fringe.
Is the climate changing? Yes. Do humans play a part? Yes. Will life as we know it be exterminated in 100 years? No.

Won't somone think of the non-value adding suits?

Swing in the other direction? It's been right of center for a long time.
With cockpit doors being locked now, it seems stupid to do anything to an airplane these days. Does "a human behind the wheel" count as an easily exploitable security hole?
My brother's quadcopter will be able to go 8-10 minutes on one battery. He normally has 4 battery packs ready to go when he brings it over.
It needs to be a forumula that is based on miles driven AND weight of the car... unless Oregon actually believes that a Civic and a Big Rig cause the same amount of long term damage to a road.
In the real world, I use whiteboards and make handwritten notes every day. It's about convenience and flexability.
I like MS OneNote and use it to keep projected organized.. often they start with a whiteboard scan that I paste into my opening page.
