How many parents are going to spend that much money on a phone for their kid? Instead of an iPhone a smart parent would just give their kid a "non-smart" phone.
My girlfriend works as an interpreter (she is Japanese but got BS and MBA in US). Last year around this time her work visa was revoked, her employer spent 5 months and thousands of dollars to get it re-instated. It was an incredibly long and stressful process for her, the company had to jump through hoops proving that this was a job that could not be readily filled by US citizens. Being able to translate verbally is one thing, being able to translate documents is completely different and a very unique skill in the US.
Experiencing what she had to go through was horrible (not to mention my personal fear that she'd get shipped back to Japan with no prospect of coming back). It seems so rediculous how easy it is for foreigners to get a visa in the IT field when the skills are universal... meaning so many Americans have them.
So basically China is the wikipedia of research papers? While there is probably plenty of legitimate research being done and pubilished, there is enough fake or plagerized data to make everyone skeptical. It may be a good starting point, but never reference a Chinese paper or get laughed at by other professionals.
No laughing here, just a bunch of "that really sucks" type comments. We have been seeing a number of stories about Americans stuck in Europe and how the locals have been extremely welcoming and helping while they hang out, in limbo.
I'm in the midwest, though. We're use to dust clouds from the farmers prepping their fields. My car stays clean for about 2 hours after I wash it before it has a thin lair of dust covering it. I was smart this time and bought a dust colored vehicle.
It's amazing how the responsible people I know never got in trouble with the real estate bust.... yet those who lived beyond their means got bit in the ass.
Sure the mortgage companies should share the blame, they were predatory, but the average person has to become better informed when making such a big decision. Heck, when I bought my first house about 5 years ago I was approved for a loan that was 50% more than what I thought I could pay and still live a comfortable life.
In MO, it's legal to make a right on red unless a sign prohibits this. I googled for the traffic code, and what I found was appalling: full stop on red is required before making a right, and this was added in the same bit of the traffic code that added the provisions for red light cameras. So the city criminalized formerly legitimate behavior, banking on the general populace's ignorance of this change, all for profit.
Are you sure it was legal to roll through a red light? In Ohio (as well as other states I've driven in) you can make a right turn at a red light at 99.5% of signals BUT you have to first come to a complete stop. That seems like common sense, red means stop. I have a hard time believing it was ever legal to roll through red lights in MO for right hand turns. Are you sure that part of the code was added and not already there when they put in the provisions for the cameras?
The lists are stupid. If I was 18 and got caught having sex with my 17 year old girlfriend, I would wind up on the sexual predator list... even if we got married. Would you avoid me if I was your neighbor, or just move without saying anything?
I think if Barack Obama wasn't half black, he would not have been elected. Younger voters wanted to prove that their generation could look beyond race. He had very little experience, he never offered anything but vague ideas, and he came from Chicago which is known for corrupt politics.
Not that I'm saying there were better options out there, I just believe if you put a white guy named Barry in his place he never even makes the Democratic primary ballot.
I am a North American. I was born here, so were my parents and my grandparents. Most of my great-grandparents were also born here although one set did come over from Germany, so they were actually European.
If you were going to be pedantic, maybe you should have suggested they use the term 'Caucasian'
My girlfriend's aunt (who is a nurse in Japan) said that Japanese have a longer colon that evolved from their high fiber diets. Sounded logical to me (someone with no medical experience). They also have no issues eating beef or pork, they just don't eat it nearly as much as us Americans.
On the other hand, I think Japanese taste buds have devolved... they will put anything in their mouth.
From my experience in Japan, the 'natives' love it when I try and speak Japanese when communicating. I've never sensed an ounce of condescending tones when I struggle.
I hear 2 or 3 incidents a week on the local news about an elderly person mistaking the accelerator and brake pedals. They have no bias towards any specific make/model from my observations.
Heck, about 5 years ago my own grandma was backing out of her garage and she missed the brake pedal and kept on going backwards right into my RSX. She was mortified, I was shocked, the rest of my family ran back into the house because they were laughing so hard.
Basically what happened is Toyota pulled a GM. All they were concerned about was being #1 and that came back to bite them in the ass. Years ago I was telling people that Toyota's quality was going to begin to suffer because their top priority shifted from putting the "best" car on the road to putting as many cars on the road.
If they solve these issues and refocus the company, they should be fine. Most consumers won't switch brands after just 1 foul-up (otherwise GM would have died in the 70s and 80s). If Toyota continues to have these issues, then I'd worry about long-term consequences.
My gf gives me a free pass to stop by Wendy's once a week so I can get my fill of a double cheeseburger. If they weren't so unhealthy I would probably get one every day. I do have a sliver of willpower left.
Same thing as Europeans giving Obama a Nobel prize for giving a few speeches. Just the outside world trying to influence US policy (something they ironically chastise the US for doing, though I can admit sometimes it is warranted).
Oh give me a break. Just because it hasn't happened to you in Malaysia doesn't mean it never happens. You're going to label an entire country based on one dickhead border patrol agent?
On second thought, stay away. We surely don't need any more 'my shit don't stink' people here.
How much did it cost to develop the vaccine for yelllow fever?
The Air Force Museum in Dayton might also be a good option for one of them.

Not that I believe the girl and her family are telling the truth, but doesn't their story deserve to be heard at the very least?
Back then you were also paying $1500 for a brand new computer (normally without a monitor). Prices have dropped across the board.

Ever been to a festival, fair, or flea market?
If you're speaking on a national sense, I'd agree. But on the local scene it's easy to see "free trade" at work.
Too bad this isn't a racial issue but a regional one.

Sushi does not always contain fish. Sushi is rice wrapped in seaweed that normally is stuffed with something else, such as vegitables or fish.

Beer must have an extremely strong magnetic field.... morality goes out the door whenever I consume a few too many.

I think you assume insurance companies have our best interest in mind. They will find a way to charge more people more money.
At that point our currency will be 'cheap plastic toys from mcdonalds' instead of dollars and we will easily pay it off.
