I can say the same thing about people from just about any country in the world. If I had to guess, I'd say only the average European does more "international" traveling.
You think the publisher is going to charge significantly less for the material if it's delivered online? The cost of textbooks is high largely because they take a lot of time to write, you need a certain number of skills to get a complex subject across effectively and you don't have anything like the economies of scale seen in the latest John Grisham so if you need to pay the author $X, you have fewer customers to spread that $X between.
While most of what you said I'd agree with, this part struck a nerve. If the cost of textbooks is so high in order to pay the authors for their time invested, why do the 2nd, 3rd, 4th (etc) editions all cost the same when the only thing done is to fix a few typos and change the end of chapter questions a bit. And on top of that, it's not like mathematics or the physical sciences have changes THAT much over the past few decades to require so many new textbooks and/or editions.
So you're an idiot because I know more about accounting than you do? Sure, my degree is in accounting and I may do accounting related activities as part of my job, but you're an idiot for asking me that question about your taxes. You must be one of those people who uses TURBOTAX....
Do you see the absurdity? You are an IT professional so it's your job to know more about computers and if you don't know more than your end user, you should look for a new profession. If everyone knew as much as you, with your attitude you probably would have problems finding a job because there would be millions of others willing to take it.
For those following the story you might have already read they believe the debris they picked up is not from the Air France flight. Is it possible there was a mid-air collision with an unregistered plane/jet?
My boss is a former pilot, he said lightning strikes planes often and it there is almost no chance the plane was downed by a lightning strike. Sure anything is possible, but I'd bet thousands of planes are struck each year.
I use that basic attitude while golfing. I frequently end up with a tree in between me and the green.
If I think about it and try to play it safe, I will normally shank it into the tree anyway. If I just hit it, tree be dammed, maybe I'll hit the tree but maybe I'll make it through.
This is an additional tax, not the total tax. I don't live in Louisiana but in my town in Ohio I have one choice for broadband, Time Warner Cable, and that costs $45 + another $5 or $6 in taxes that are tacked on (which is about 97-100 Reals). I'm suppose to get a 7Mbit connection but it's normally only around 4Mbit. Not to mention if I stream video it seems to magically slow way down.
If they don't offer what the market wants then they'll see fewer sales. Either more people pirate XP or people stop buying completely new PCs and just upgrade their old ones one piece at a time.
It's not like they are going to brick all current computers running XP forcing people to upgrade to Vista. Sure it may be a dick move by MS, but I don't see it as being anti-competative. A company should be able to set it's own market mix.
I would have thought most people on/. would actually welcome this news. MS could annoy more of its' customer base and send them looking for alternatives. Either piracy or a switch to Mac or Linix is less money to MS.
And I use to blame IE6 for making/. look like shit but then I go home and use Firefox and/. still looks like shit. It makes me wonder if there's any browser that will load up/. correctly.
I wouldn't say I necessarily believe it. The majority of users probably have no idea what DRM is and are thus unaffected. Those that do know what DRM is will either buy the software anyway and deal with it, buy the software then download a cracked version, or forego paying entirely and just download the cracked version.
I'd be more likely believe the percentage of people who skip paying and just download the cracked version hasn't changed much over the years.
Give me a few years and a grand for $1,000,000 and I'll do a study that proves this. Just like there have been studies that have also shown that DRM lowers piracy... and this one that shows DRM increases piracy. Now we need a study that shows DRM doesn't affect piracy.
From Toledo you could get to Detroit quite easily. Cleveland is only 90 minutes away (from downtown Toledo). Columbus is also not terribly far. There are plenty of nice communities between the larger cities to live.
While there might not be as much in Toledo itself, there are plenty of opportunities in the general area. In Ohio you can travel 60 miles in 60 minutes. In California you can travel 10 miles in 60 minutes.
And it smells pretty good at the fuel stations! Sort of reminds me of driving past the Jim Beam plant that is near Cincinnati.
What you are forgetting is Brazil uses sugar cane based ethanol and the US is trying corn based. Everything I've seen says corn is less efficient for ethanol.
I've always wondered, if this all came from the big bang, what caused the big bang in the first place? What made that singularity expand. What if this is actually the 5th edition of the universe... It expands from a singularity for a few hundred billion years before contracting back into a singularity. Then once it hits that singularity it "explodes" again basically re-making the universe from scratch.
It just didn't live up to the older Star Treks, where the focus was on the sheer joy of discovery and the strength of the human spirit. There was a bit of the latter, but it was mostly just standard action-movie fare.
Give the new crew a chance to make an impact. Although a bit far fetched, I enjoyed how the story showed the key players getting aboard the Enterprise. To me at least, this movie was just the groundwork for future movies/series using the same cast.
Just because someone doesn't like the game doesn't make them whiney or uninformed. My guild that I played SWG and WoW with moved to AoC at launch... and within 3 months people started moving back to WoW. I made the mistake of paying for 6 months worth of AoC when I first created my account, about 3-4 months in I was completely bored of the game. The class I chose was horrible playing solo (barbarian). I can't remember what level I reached but I didn't come close to hitting the max.
I think the combat system had a lot of promise. It's too bad they released an alpha version of the game which was so bad that it ruined the game's credibility for ever. AoC is known as a flop and they will have a hard time ever getting rid of that stigma.
The only reason Biden basically got a free pass during the election was because everyone was either focused on Obama being half black or Palin being a MILF. No one really talked much about McCain or Biden.
My gf has lost about 10lbs this year so far (not that she had a whole lot to lose in the beginning). Well one day I told her she looks good and her retort was "why, did you think I was fat before!" Men just can't win, it's better to just act dumb and say nothing because any compliment will be turned around and used against us.
I've been getting calls on my cell phone and my work phone (many other people in my office have been getting calls too). Funny thing is I have a company car that is only a year old, I doubt the warranty is running out, especially since my company BUILT the car.
I actually called the number back to figure out what the scam was, the guy on the other side asked me for my auto information. I told him that since he called me up, he should already know what my information is. Then the guy hung up on me.

I hope the electronic books work, somehow.

You're not a very informed American, which makes me sad as an American.
Why couldn't there be time before the big bang, it just happened to have been erased when the singularity was formed.

My grandad, who I'm named after Must be tough being in the miiltary with a last name of Coward...
Maybe more appropriate to smack him in the face with a chair, though.

I hope there is a public lynching.
I learned that trick from Mr. Wizard.
