As usual, the colonies are ahead of the mother country. The CBC has Ogg streamin www.cbc.ca/listen/ogg.html ...if only the Ogg plugin in iTunes could play it.
A quick check reveals that the ABC uses Real and Windows
Why is everony giving this guy a hard time. Just wait until Apple wants him to work on the Panther server Admin tool. Think about all those Grandmas using a new G5 in some new complex in Florida. A tool like this might prevent a huge DDoS! It might also be good for people usin Linspire, but I doubt Linspire is in use on that many high speed networks.
Yes, the first poster was right. People who should read every line of thier logs should read every line of their logs.
And if you are the ultimate dork, I'm sure you wouldn't mind a hiking/out dooor backpack. You'd have all the pouches and cases, plus the weight of all that hardware would no longer be on one side of your body.
My one PowerBook and gear and a nice big book travel in a Targus bag with the plastic latch on the strap that I had to re-enforced. I probably sholud have a backpack, but I don't want to look like a dork.
If he's lugging two power supplies etc. for two identical laptops I don't think he's interested in an secenario where you are running one OS at a time.
No one would buy Windows for the Mac - unless it was setup like WINE XT to run Windows applications. No one wants to run Windows over Mac OSX, not even most Windows users.
What people want is to run their games, and decade of other software they bought for their PC underr OSX.
I'd pay $$ for a working version of WINE XT for my PowerBook!
... then I go out for the night and miss watching the discussion unfold.
I thought slashdoters might like this one. My favourtie comment was: "Smashing your head into a wall while taking steroids is as healthy as professional football!"
I think that sums it up. My problem was that "Beer has the same limited benifits found in wine as long as......" didn't quite fit in the submision box.
Clearly, we all know alcohal has risks. I hope my next submission is a comparison of Pepsi, Coke, Coffee, Tea, Beer and Wine (maybe a merlot) in a 'which is worst for you' shoot-out. My hope is the black stuff is the healthiest of the bunch.
Fahrenheit 9/11 begins on election night 2000. We are first shown Al Gore rocking on stage with famous musicians and a high-spirited crowd. The conspicuous sign on stage reads "Florida Victory." Moore creates the impression that Gore was celebrating his victory in Florida. Moore's voiceover claims, "And little Stevie Wonder, he seemed so happy, like a miracle had taken place." The verb tense of past perfect ("had taken") furthers the impression that the election has been completed.
Good for Dave Kopel for offering all that info up - all sides need their say. My comment is are we disputting facts or symantics?
On Monday I replaced my now falling apart PowerBook G3 with a PowerBook 15' and through an educational offer in Canada 'Cram and Jam' I also bought an iPod for $90 after rebate. I knew the 4th Gen was soon, but I needed that PowerBook and I can't knock a $90 15GB 3rd Gen iPod.
Things got even better today when they e-mailed me to tell me I'd now get a 20GB and the ship date was moved from the 27th to the 21st!
Now I just hope that PowerBook shows up at work with the afternoon mail!
I run the GREAT daapd project on my Gentoo system to stream out my music to all the machines at my home network and to work. I was recently thinking "how much power would it take to embed that project and take on the squeeze box?".
But, knowing how small the mach kernel is, could this all be run via real software? Airport is mainly run my hardware controlled by a tinny bit of firmware, but given this thing has more features than your average home router, do you think Apple has stripped down Darwin to create it?
Think about, the development for getting CUPS, mDNS, DHCPD, their DAAP, their firewall, the airport driver might out weigh the cost of a hardware with enough power to run an embedded system.
As a Canadian Linux and OS X user I really wish M$ would stop using ski destinations in British Columbia for their code names. If they must use Canadian based names why not things like "Sea King," Mulroney and Hamilton?
I'm kinda in the same boat. I have a pair of Macs and a couple of Linux boxes to work on at home and work... but I only write PHP and flash.... I just needed to compile other people's code and use 'make' and 'gcc'.
So I'm happy to be a member, and I'm glad to have all the tools I got (Rendezvous can be sooo useful when trying to manage an ad-hoc network,) but a developer, I don't know.
The problem with *nix GUIs is that they are simple CLI command replacements or an editor for a specific config file. *nix GUIs are rarely designed to achieve a task.
When I was in public school I had a couple of Amigas, in High school a Compaq (dark days), in University I got a PowerBook with OS 10.2.whatever and now I've graduated to the working world and my own Panther machine and a few servers to admin (SuSE and RedHat AS).
I've found that for the most part, Linux world GUIs are GUIs for the associated command or config file (esp. with RH AS!). When we installed RH AS I looked forward to perhaps using the some advanced GUIs for server config to save time etc. - I even wondered about setting up a secure VNC system.
NO! As most to who read the article would agree - It's quicker to just do it on the CL then wade through a GUI. Most Linux GUIs are useless and just mangle config files, the CLI is the only way to get anything meaningful done.
Compare this to a Mac OSX, where the GUIs are designed to do a specific task - not replace a specific command. The whole printing situation on *nix has been used to illustrate this before. My under standing of Panther Server is that it has applications that preform tasks, not replace a command - but I have yet to use its tools.
If linux GUIs continue to be just replacements of commands and config files then we'll never see linux on the desktop.
Simple Example: If Aunt Tillie wants her printer to work she'll need to ensure CUPSD is running in level 5 in the init level GUI plus working with all the other GUIs with an actual printer icon.
I know, www.nsa.gov/snac/os/applemac/osx_client_final_v.1. pdf is not only a 404, it's an IIS 404. Why should I trust someone to help me secure my machine if they are running IIS?

The trick to getting an early post on an ask-slashdot question is to give no useful advice.
On that note, have you tried Schubert's PDF Browser Plugin, http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf .
It uses the fact that Quartz uses the PDF standard to quickly draw a PDF in the browser window. So easy to do, yet not done by preview.

Standard foreigner's question (perhaps Canadian) to US citizen:
- How can you live within a two party system?
- I don't know. I like the checks and balances.
- Can you name any?
- ummm...
LostCluster post is a good example to refrence. The intent to produce a verion of a popular game for the Mac is news.
I love my PB and other machines, and most of all OSX, but it's a good thing my favourite game is Google.
It is a poor citizen who blames his tools.
Google is no replacement for memory
Suddenly I'm like Dick Cheney with URLs

Apple also annouced that Canada is too cold for iTunes quality soundwaves to work and plans to never let the canucks into the iTunes store.

Soon the iPod will be sold at a price that reflects its components, not its demand. Finally I'll be able to afford the iPod I've been waiting for.

I saw that on MacSlash.org (I think) last week, but off the shelf, there are no USB WiFi adapters for OS X.
My point - the price of the base station might be wroth the hassle.
Granted, Pismo is the first one and only one. Bronze Keyboard and all non-firewire PowerBooks before it don't have a spot for it.
