People are throwing "pro level" around way too much.
By the same token, there are just as many people throwing around the implication that you can't do anything with this software - simply untrue. You should actually try and use the software before you dismiss it as something unusable.
Hydrogen is very usable - and expandable in a way that BFD et al are not.
They're all getting that way. I just ordered SUSE 9.2, and in my purchase history, I bought 9.1 in May, '04. Prior to that I bought 9.0 in October, '03. Seems like all the distros are shooting for six month release schedules.
From everything I've seen, self-determination is largely a prerequisite for UNIX use. Predigested package deals might work for Windows...but I think the Open Group's UNIX slogan of Live Free or Die definitely applies...and those sorts of terms do not imply to me that hand-holding is an option
I disagree. Look at Mac OS X. Predesigned and packaged seems to work quite well there.
I can't speak to SuperNOS, or even to Wordperfect, but I CAN speak to what they've done for SUSE...
They've continued to refine SUSE for desktop use, which includes players and plugins you won't find in any most any other distribution, for one. YAST being open-sourced/GPLed is another great thing they've done.
On the server side, they've open-sourced Open Exchange. They're certainly doing something with Linux.
81% of American adults identify themselves with a specific religion according to national studies.
I don't think many people have a problem with that. The problem is when people try to replace your religion with theirs (via legisislation). My morality may not be the same as your morality. Doesn't mean I have no morals. Just different ones.
...
His parents were afraid that he would confuse English and Finn and thus fall behind in school... I just wish my grandparents had had access to this information...
My grandparents were 100 percent Norwegian. Their generation is entirely different than this generation as far as multiple language acceptance. My grandparents were ostracized for speaking anything other than English. That's the way is was for any immigrant group in the US during the last half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. More likely your grandparents were worried more about that than him falling behind.
Are your grandparents still alive? If so, ask them about it. You'll be a bit shocked at the bigotry based solely on language (it was really a class thing, but language was the escape goat).
put a shortcut on her desktop to Firefox, and gave it the IE 'e'-icon.
I know you think you're doing a good thing - and maybe you are, in the short run - but in the long run, it's really not. You're slighting any kind of credit the Firefox people deserve for their work.
Not to mention the fact that she'll eventually go to an IE-only site that was previously displayable to her and now doesn't display correctly (you do know that they exist, right?... and that MSN-types frequent them, because they are built precisely by the MSN folks, right?)
A better option would be to be honest about the addition (not replacement), and show sites that function properly. They exist and are nice alternatives to anything IE-specific that's out there.
Don't know about manufacturers shipping laptops with Linux preloaded, but SUSE, since 9.0 at least, has loaded very nicely on four different laptops I've thrown at it (currently running 9.1 on all but one).
As a matter of fact, I've had much better luck installing/upgrading SUSE than I've had upgrading XP Home to XP Pro.
While nobody was looking (or they were focusing on RedHat/Fedora) SUSE's become a top-notch distro.
I love stupid turist stories. Anyway, in my travels its always Americans who are the stupid turists.
Well, we Americans don't have a stranglehold on being stupid turists (although we're probably more visible, due to what we consider casual wear). Turists are generally stupid, no matter where you find them. I spend some of my time every year in Italy. I speak the language. I can honestly say I've never met an Brit who speaks anything other than English. Not saying that the majority of Americans speak more than one language, because in my experience, we don't. But if you're going to talk about being accepted in another country, at least learning a few basic phrases goes a long way (I'd say much more so that the way you dress). I think the majority of the locals will be happy to fall back to English once they see you've at least given it a shot.
Today the good professor warned that the fun bus could all come to a crashing halt in less than two years because of steady increases in everything that makes the Internet such a pain in the rear. Viruses, trojans, spam, and security flaws
I suffer from none of those things. Never have. And I use both Linux and WinXP. A good portion of my friends, family and coworkers don't suffer either.
Will it bring down the price of the game(s)? If so, I'm OK with that. If the price stays the same, or goes up, all it is is greed, and, well, I'll probably pass.
The thing about the Zaurus is that there is such a big developer community behind it. That meant you got your choice of "distributions" to run, not to mention a goldmind of apps. There's pretty much an app for every need (within reason, I suppose) to run on the Zaurus.
... nor has it been modded to run Linux how does this rate as News for Nerds?
No modding needed. Does it need to run Linux to qualify as News for Nerds? A lot of Win-whatever, Mac, Solaris, BSD, etc. people will be upset if it only qualifies as news when Linux is involved.
Would you rather have a a system that booted correctly this morning routing your flight, or one that booted correctly last year and may have its components functioning properly anymore?
To that I would say that you put a (another) system in place that does all the monitoring.
Really, damn Microsoft for making it acceptable to call a reboot preventative maintenence.
Because we can never have too many "Profit" jabs.

But yes, I agree it probably shouldn't be that way.
Maybe it's a toll call to Punta Arenas :-)
Probably branded AOL, much like KFC, which, God help us, is doing well in Europe.

A mute Julie Andrews.

Oh Ick. Just what we need - more ads on a pay service.

Not saying I don't get spam. I do. But I know how to deal with it. I don't suffer from it.

Really. The majority just want to use iTunes together with their iPod seamlessly - something already being doen, and quite nicely.
The web has always been a place to do new things.
And we're still seeing evolution when it comes to content.

Now maybe you could repeat that little exercise in, say, Spanish, or better yet - how about your other second language?
Less anger, less laziness.
To that I would say that you put a (another) system in place that does all the monitoring.
