Just like this project is being done in only one state in India, I know of at least one state in the U.S. that is doing this. Utah. There is a fiber optic network known as UTOPIA that is being rolled out state wide...except where I live. I live in Provo, and the city planners decided to do it their own way. I will grant, however, that Provo's network is being rolled out a lot faster than UTOPIA is being done. There's already a significant portion of the city with access to iProvo (it's on the richer part of town, of course). But, I don't live in that area. I'm a student barely managing to survive on Top Ramen, and really crappy broadband.

[RANT]The stupid ISP that handles the Internet access for my apartment complex doesn't know how to set up their network! They put idiotic bandwidth limits on users - you get 64 kbps for free, any faster and you have to pay more - and the lousy network they set up can't even handle a fifty percent load. I paid extra for 256K, and I only get that in the morning when everyone else is at school, or late at night when everyone else is asleep. Oh, and you're only allowed to use your internet connection for 5 hours a day. Any more than that and they charge you a dollar an hour. Not to mention how poor the installation was.[/RANT] O.K., now I feel better. Next semester I'm moving into a house and getting cable for my broadband.

But to the serious gamer, a Mac is just not an option. It's just not. Why? Because a Mac is not as good for the graphics intensive games as the Windows equivalent.

I have to absolutely disagree. I was just expeiencing this last night. I tried running Unreal Tournament 2003 on a 3.06 800 FSB P4 with a Radeon 9600 - it ran fine. Then I played it on a dual 2.0 Ghz G5 with the same video card. No comparison. The G5 was way smoother, and the graphics were sharper - even at the same resolution. I have the machines on a KVM switch, so I could switch back and forth to look. The colors were brighter, and the textures were much more...3d-ish. There was more of a sense of depth on the dual G5.

The whole "macs aren't good for games" arguments are becoming pretty passe now. Most popular games come out for the Mac within a little while of the PC release (I can stand to wait a while for the newest game, I usually do anyway just so I don't have to pay full price). Yes, there are quite a few games that are not available for OS X, but there are plenty of games out there. BTW UT 2004 screams on my dual 1.8 Ghz G5.

Part of the reason for some programs to have installers (especially programs that are large enough to span over multiple disks), is to get everything organized into those packages that you find in your Applications folder. Unreal Tournament 2004 had an installer for the CD-ROM version, and all that was for was so that all of the files across the four CDs could be loaded into the package for the program.

And I seriously doubt if this will be the thing that splits the Romulans off from the Vulcans. That should have happened a long time before "Enterprise" started. Vulcan civil war...right.

Stupid enter key, I didn't get to make my point. We have three wireless access points and four Panasonic Gigarange phones, as well as multiple Bluetooth devices. We've had Bluetooth, wi-fi, and the phones running (and I think someone was microwaving some popcorn, too) and none of the above had any problems...except maybe the popcorn. It also depends on the phones, too. The phones we have here are fairly new. We had a similar setup at my uncle's house, and he had an older model of the Panasonic Gigarange phone, and I could tell when someone was on the phone because my internet connection was gone. Apparently the earlier versions of the Gigarange phones were geared towards higher transmitter power, and overall sound clarity at a distance. But they also didn't play nice on the 2.4 Ghz band. If the phone decides that it wants to use the channel that your wireless network is on your network (at least until grandma gets off the dang phone!) is toast. These phones run at around 5 watts, while your average access point runs at something closer to 500 mW and will get totally swamped.

That seems fairly obvious to me that they wouldn't interfere with each other. The phone runs on 900 Mhz and the network runs on 2.4 Ghz. They're on different frequencies, therefore they don't interfere.

My school really got me worried when I was standing in the cashiers line to pay tuition when I noticed a sheet of paper on the wall. It said something like: "These people need to come see the cashiers", and it proceeded to list names and STUDENT ID NUMBERS! At some schools the ID numbers thing isn't too bad (it's still bad to print that info in a public place, though) since you just have some odd number assigned to you by the school. Unfortunately my college uses your social security number as your student ID. So they posted the names and social security numbers of about ten people on the wall of the administration building. Not to mention the fact that you can get on the school's website and enter a student's name into a search form and get their address and phone number. They were just inviting identity theft there. I'll never forget the look on the head cashiers face when I told them what some idiot had done. She looked like she was going to die!

Apple's dot releases of OS X are also more than just security fixes (which is what pretty well ALL of Microshaft's updates tend to be). They contain enhancements to the OS such as Expose for 10.3, and speed increases. Gee, imagine that! Making the OS run more efficiently! The Microsoft mantra seems to be "Computers are getting faster, so Windows can become more and more bloated!" And, no, I'm not just some Apple fanboy flaming Windows. I have worked as a PC technician for the last year and a half and the typical customer mentality is "I have a PC, I can install the latest version of Windows." Anyone ever seen a 133 Mhz Pentium with 64 megs of RAM running Windows XP? It's pretty darned painful - even when you turn off the visual effects. But, if you take a Mac from the same era as that PC it'll run OS 10.3 just fine, except for expose since it needs some more modern hardware support for its visual effects.
