Seems like GDPR compliance in the EU is likely to be a problem. I suspect that HIPAA compliance in the US might be a problem for medical data, but I don't know enough about HIPAA to be sure.
So far, Microsoft has been very agreeable to meeting HIPAA terms and signing the needed business and HIPAA agreements to deal with hospitals and PHI. Google and Amazon, not so much IME (which is a couple of years out of date).
... aaaand now I'm trying to figure out how to rig it for finding gold nuggets in the earth...
And my first thought is that it wouldn't have much use with a 2' range. Then I started thinking about placer deposits in river bed rocks. Might be able to use it to determine if an area was worth digging up into a mining sluice. Of course, I have no real clue to the realities of prospecting for placer gold...or how these wifi things work.
Sorry for my cluelessness, but what does expression "7+B" mean? Search doesn't return anything useful...
Seven or more billion. No worries. It's not surprising that a native Russian speaker AC such as yourself wouldn't pick up on the subtilties of a non-standard English abbreviation.
The war here is simple... They want us to become Venezuela...
Naw, that this says is that they want us to become Canada or Northern Europe. Where they wish they had grown up, and where they'd probably think would be a better place to raise their kids.
...that at least 90% of the people do not even understand what "Socialism" is, but they also realize that "Capitalism" has been taken over by "Crony Capitalism", I'm only surprised that the percentage isn't higher.
"And these children that you spit on, as they try to change their world...They're immune to your consultations - they're quite aware of what they're going through..."
I'd probably say those things are true. Even then, the 10% who do understand "socialism" probably couldn't agree on a definition let alone a method of putting it into practice. It's a fairly large philosophy by this point with hundreds, if not thousands of people with different ideas expanding the ideas which different people are working off of. Similarly, with "capitalism", from talking to other people almost all of them are mean some sort of profit driven market system rather than the ability to own and control the means of production. It'd be nice to sit down, start with some basics, get a working vocabulary together and have a good discussion on such here on/., but that doesn't seem likely. What this this article is probably really telling us, is that young americans are more and more interested by the systems of Canada and Europe. I've had several friends move out of the US, usually those who have lived overseas or whose spouses had, and that which places would be a better place to raise kids was also a factor. And, ya, I'm more down with drinypoo's Ministry lyric.
chunks of the corona actually accelerate and break away from the immense pull of the Sun at supersonic speeds.
What's the speed of sound at the surface of the Sun, compared to sea level on Earth?
Probably doesn't matter. So long as the corona hits you before you hear it breaking away, it's super sonic. Although really, this is outer space, so they should have used the prefix of hyper- instead.
Cooling towers are used in many plants, nuclear and coal, and seem to work.
Cooling towers work to specifications they are built to. I believe what the parent is saying, is that the current heat wave is driving things past those specifications. Cooling towers would work, as would large water reservoir but they'd have to be rebuilt, perhaps from the ground up and the current conditions would probably be over by time the money was paid and the work done. That's assume they had the money and available water, but they certainly don't have the time.
It wasn't until the master changed to a woman that changing of sex was even a possibility.
Moffet had introduced the possiblity years ahead of that. The eleventh doctor checking to see if he was still male in 2011 after regenerating. Refering to another time lord who had been female in two regenerations in 2012. The Sisters of Karn saying they could make the doctor regenerate as female in 2013. Then the Master in 2014.
Actually, better: no. Please DON'T move to the midsection of the country. It's terrible here. Much better to live in your car.
Having grown up in the midsection of the country, I would agree. So would all my friends who also moved from the midsection of the country and are now on the coasts.
Ummm, your proposal for giving Mars a magnetic field strong enough to shield the atmosphere from UV/ solar wind stripping is... ?
Just some very rough designs that don't actually break the laws of physics. Not detailed plans. They're a couple of millennia from being necessary.
Probably the most likely one I've read about would be putting a satellite in Mars' L1 spot or similar orbit between Mars and the Sun (a little leading most likely) that had a magnetic field. All you have to do is deflect solar radiation enough for them to miss Mars. Haven't done the math, but just to terraform Mars' atmosphere to human livable pressures will require energy in units of total output of the sun over time and, like you said, are millennia from being necessary.
That's not the case for phones. People at least want to make phone calls with them.
tbh a lot of people wouldn't miss it if their phone stopped making calls.
If I couldn't get phone calls, how would I ever talk to my parents? Honestly, I checked and the only people I've had to use my phone to talk to in the last year were my parents and then one call each from my girlfriend and my neighbor. That excludes texting which gets used a lot, but my parents can't learn to do that. Past that, there are only robocalls. Endless robocalls. So many that our state government has simply told people not to answer the phone if they don't recognise the number.
"Unemployment is at record lows, and still dropping as I type this."
Only if you are dumb enough to use the u2 instead of the u6. And even that is well-known to deliberately not count people. Why everyone keeps repeating that obvious lie is beyond me.
U6 is down too and almost to an all time low for 30 years. Only being beat by the height of the.com boom. They pretty well seems to track each other. Median adjusted household income also seems to be at a high similar to the.com boom and the housing boom. The only real thing that stands out by looking at the historical data is wondering what bubble is about to burst.
Somewhere I read that Mars lost its atmosphere because it didn't have a magnetic field to keep the solar wind from blasting its atmosphere away, and, if we tried to build up an atmosphere again, the same thing would happen.
It's a lot, about 3kT/year gets lost. It's twice the amount of CO2 humans currently produce every year.
If you have technology that can produce a viable atmosphere on Mars, the question of where you need to live has become moot, you could pick any object in the habitable zone of any star and terraform it.
OK. I was going to disagree with you earlier in the thread, but I'll agree with you here. Even with good amount of CO2 and the like on Mars that could be used locally to make an atmosphere, there is still a need for an 10^16 kg just to get in the range where the atmospheric pressure would be survivable by a human. If that is possible, then restoring the annual loss of of 10^3 would be pretty much trivial on the time scales that matter. FYI, last time I checked, the minimum energy needed to move that material from the moons of Jupiter to Mars is in the order of 10^29 Joules (about one minute of total output of the sun). Mining Ceres might be a bit cheaper, but I haven't done that math yet.
Have we forgotten that Mars doesn't have a magnetic field to shield the solar winds from stripping away the atmosphere that's already there? Trying to terraform it to the point of having a stable atmosphere is a fools errand. It'll be like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it.
Not really. Mars needs so much atmosphere compared to what is being stripped away, that if there is any ability to actually give it that atmosphere, making up for the loss would just be a trivial maintenance exercise. For that matter, if we have the ability to move the 10^16 kg of material just to give it the pressure enough that a human could survive (nevermind be Earth-like), we could probably give it a magnetic field. It would just be a mater of figuring out what combination of artificial magnetic field and shipping more atmosphere would be the most efficient.
I don't care about raising and killing, I worry about the cost. Essentially the energy wasted to raise an animal that you then only get to use a fraction of hurts my capitalist heart when you could get the same from some dirt cheap soy with a bit of flavoring.
Energy really isn't the issue. Most livestock lives off of stuff that humans can't eat and is easy to harvest. Ox and cow eat grass. Chickens eat seed and insects. Pigs eat trash. (Horses eat grain, but they are usually too important as work animals so we don't eat them.) We only feed them things like corn because there is a filthy amount of cheap corn. Even cheaper and less energy intensive than non-food stock options with modern production methods. (We'll leave out subsidies.) In the past and still in many places in the world, raising animals for eating and milking is the least amount of energy required, otherwise, they'd do otherwise and choose not to starve. Indeed, the common theme these days is that the modern vegan diet is pretty much only possible in areas like Europe with a particular climate and serves only to promote colonialism and dominance of the West.
Every nation spies on every other nation. This has been going on since before the invention of writing. Blaming Trump is absurd.
True, and that Trump, the leader and spokesperson for the country is doing nothing once they have been caught is effectively telling them to increase their efforts till they are at least told to stop. However, it's worse than that as he has actually encouraged them to step up their efforts literally back on the campaign trail. At best, he does this because it is self serving over the concerns of the country.
Indeed. I believe BBC did a study after some outrage issue and found that much of the conservation money comes from those dentists and other great white hunters. Also, that $50k is just for the license for that one animal. That doesn't include all the other costs the host country typically requires like hiring guides, rangers, gun holders, etc. Even then, the creatures they hunt are usually the ones that need to be culled anyway.
But that was the one that was about a straight white male... Surely if diversity was the problem then the other three new-era films would have flopped and Solo would have been a huge success.
Maybe it's just not a very good film, or we have reached Star Wars saturation point.
Maybe it was because it was right after two other big block busters? Many of the shared fans went to see Infinity War and Deadpool multiple times. Solo landed at the wrong time. I like going to the movies, but no to the point of going to them every Friday for a month. While that probably wasn't all the issue, I bet that it didn't help at all.
...(is OneDrive considered HIPAA compliant ?)
OneDrive for Business is. Of the cloud enterprises, Microsoft seems to be the one that will deal with HIPAA agreements the easiest.
Seems like GDPR compliance in the EU is likely to be a problem. I suspect that HIPAA compliance in the US might be a problem for medical data, but I don't know enough about HIPAA to be sure.

It hasn't been tried many times.
It's been tried in many places that monarchism or capitalism was tried and had already failed.

Is this post cleverly disguised as a troll to get yet more comments going about a anddroid/iphone religious war?
LOL.. Yea, I miss the Emacs / vi debate too. Nothing lasts forever, but many things just have the names changed when they get recycled....
Ya, but at least vi died a well deserved death of obscurity.
You know what I really miss on Slashdot? John C. Dvorak articles. Here's one: The Traditional Laptop is Dead

Medical devices with Windows 7? That's a laugh. We have medical devices around here running Windows XP. How's that for a nightmare?
Shall I talk about when we actually retired the last Win95 boxen over here (running on Novell network no less).
Oh wait, they don't exist anymore, except in zoo.
Zoos are exploitation. Those will have to go too.
