  1. At My University on Attack of the PowerPoint-Wielding Professors · · Score: 1

There is an Engineering Professor who does online videos of powerpoints. In place of lectures. They drone on. It's funny, in lecture, he doesn't speak in monotone. In his PowerPoints, he does. Almost impossible to get through.

  2. First Hand Experience on Toyotas Suddenly Accelerate; Owners Up In Arms · · Score: 5, Interesting

Toyota has a serious problem. Have for years. It's not the floor mats.

I was driving a '98 Toyota Camry. Foot on the brake. B-R-A-K-E. Yes, I know the difference. Car in drive. Waiting for a right turn. The car revved up high. I did manage to throw it into neutral, and the engine continued to surge. Luckily I didn't hit anything. And it was pure luck.

The car did not have All-weather floor mats.

I have racing experience, and a background in Mechanical Engineering.

The reason the problem hasn't been found is that it's probably a subtle fault (like the AT&T crash back in the early '90s, or the stress concentrations in the DeHavilland Comet) and they're (by they I mean the NHTSA) probably not looking very thoroughly, due to lack of manpower. They don't do investigations of car crashes the way they do for other serious engineering failures, like plane crashes or bridge collapses.

Finally there is the point that a lot of Segway owners are, like the author of this, smug dickheads. They have this attitude of "Oh this thing is so amazing, and I feel so sorry for all you plebs who are uninitiated in to the glory of Segway."

Nail on the head right here. I talked to some guy going around town in one of the "off road" (I laugh too) versions. He was talking about how when gas hits $5 a gallon, I'll get one too, along with everyone else. I was walking at the time. The look on his face, when I said I'd rather invest $20 in shoes than $6000 for a toy was priceless. Then he went into fits when I said it wasn't as fast or versatile as a bicycle. They say that was what killed the Atari 2600, and caused the video game crash of '83. The platform was wide open, so too many games came out, flooded the market. None of the games were profitable, due to fierce competition.

Of course, the consumer won out. Games could be had real, real cheap. So when a small Japanese playing card company decided to release their own system a year later, everyone said they were crazy. But, with the lockout chip, they kept most unlicensed games off their Famicom, and almost all of them off the US version, the NES.

  11. Not unreasonable (Fox + Universal)... on Halo Movie Deal Moves Closer · · Score: 1

The average action movie has something like 20 weeks of preproduction these days. Sci Fi is more (you can't even hope to shoot on location). The script probably has to be tossed. I hated 28 Days Later! Garland is not the best choice to script it, Dan O'Bannon would have been better.

As for the writer's bible, these are fairly common... on TV. The movies are a whole other game.

I also wonder why M$ didn't buy out a small studio, or build one. They could (would) have shot it on spec if they really believed in the project. My guess is that they just want to use this as lead in advertising for Halo 3. They don't expect the movie to do better than break even, if that.

I may be wrong, but I think the Studios are concerned that MicroSoft will leave them high and dry.

Yeah, but there wasn't much homebrew on the PS2, which Sony opened up for home dev witht the linux kit. There may not be a groundswell of support.

Nintendo has a pretty nasty reputation with homebrew games (at least in the US. In Japan, they made a programming kit for the Famicom).

And I've seen some pretty bad bugs in games that were officially signed off on. How many games for the N64 showed clipping errors?

Nintendo is in trouble. Their longtime cash cow, the venerable Game Boy, is going to lose market share to the PSP. If they add the hard drive to the PSP, and bring the price down $100 (or even $50), Sony's going to eat their lunch. Nintendo can't afford the development costs that M$ and Sony can (not that there was much in the way of Development costs for the Xbox). And they really can't afford the same marketing costs. This approach is intended to be a sort of grassroots marketing campaign. And is laughable considering Nintendo is the group that set up this whole proprietary, licensed marketing scheme, and now wants to change course because its been biting them in the heiney.

If they really wanted to reach out to the fans, they should make an add on (or better yet, build in) an adapter for old NES and SNES cartidges. They've been touting the emulators, and a third party sold one for the N64. I HATE having to repurchase games (or any media) that I've already bought, and I'm sure you all do too.
