  3. Re:Parents on Take-Two Interactive and Sony Sued Over GTA · · Score: 1

Almost every post here is telling the same thing: Sony and TakeTwo should not be held responsible for actions of those who play their games, especially when the rating restrictions where violated. And many of you went on criticizing those who blame the whole world but themselves.

Although those are very valid points, you are forgetting what this lawsuit is about: compensation. The kids that committed the crime, and maybe even their parents, are already guilty and punishable by law, there's no question about that. But the victims family, who lost their loved ones, will gain nothing from that. They and their lawyers know they can't win a lawsuit against the gamemakers, they are going only after a settlement. This has worked very well in the past and the lawyers know that.

Is that the right thing to do, to go after the game maker? I think Slashdot readers have voice their opinion. But the lawyers aren't trying to do the right thing, they want maximum profit.

  7. What is the problem? on Big Company on Campus · · Score: 1

When Apple donated Macs to school, we loved it. And many of those benefitted became loyal Apple fans.

    So why criticize Microsoft's actions?

They were both trying to do the same thing: grow interests and innovations for their product by having students learn about their product. Helping community is good PR, but that's not what most companies go for when they donate. Company executes are investors. They constantly face the challenge of where to put their money on. Many of them invests in school for their company's future as their main interest.

In fact, I feel it is the school's responsibility to decide whether the amount of donation being offered justifies the impact on the students. A business's best interest is always money, I won't blame them for that. A educational institute, on the other hand, should look out for their students.

The Chinese goverment has always been promoting local business above the foreign business. It's not just about whether they would adopt open standards. There are many issues when dealing with China.

In my experience working in the semiconductor industry, I know China's economy in that sector is growing at a rapid rate. Many big name companies here, like HP, SUN, etc are all trying to get a piece of the pie. The only company to successfully grow their business in China is Intel. Everyone else aren't finding a good way to set foot in China. There are many business standards that China does not adopt from global businesses.

A main one is China does not recognize Intellectual Property. You bring your products to China, a local company to rip your design and sell it at a cheaper price. The goverment will not protect you against that. In fact, I might suspect they allow that kind of business conduct.

This is what I've learn about growing business in China for the semiconductor industry. I would imagine software industry is similar.

We have organizations such as Better Business Bureau to make sure businesses are doing things right and fair for their customers. They would encourage people to point out flaws of a business. It's the same idea with security flaws.

The one that should be punished is the COMPANY that leaves out security flaw, not the guys that points it out. It's about who's responsibility is it...simple as that.
