Just sitting idle with this article open has both of my processor cores running 25% higher (using Chrome on Windows 7 64-bit). If I close the tab with Slashdot in it, my CPU load immediately drops.

Also agree that there's way too much whitespace. I don't really like the left-hand nav bar either. There doesn't appear to be any obvious reasoning behind their grouping. I can see why stories/recent/popular/userID are grouped together, but why are ask slashdot/book reviews/games/etc. grouped and alphabetized separately from cloud/hardware/linux/etc.? Is there some logical reasoning behind that? Maybe put a line some other more obvious separation if they really belong separate.

I'm not sure, but I think you might be referring to The Light of Other Days, by Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter. In the story, they develop a wormhole technology that allows an observer to view anyone, anywhere, and at any time - past or present. The technology was made universally available and so privacy is essentially lost since anyone could be watching anyone else at any time or place and there was little that could be done about it.

Yes, he stole the special light cycle that his Dad built that's faster than every other light cycle in the grid, used it for a boring commute into town, then gave it away to a digital hobo. He could have used his Dad's old beater (if he had one, of course) with the same result. Granted, they avoided the standard movie trope of introducing something special so that it can be used at a crucial point, but they basically forgot about it 5 minutes later. Hell, they could at least have added a throw-away scene like the hobo going on to win some race (or selling it) and getting his life back, but they didn't even do that.

Can you absolutely guarantee with 100% certainty that every piece of avionics on the plane is operating within it's specifications and has 100% effective shielding in place at all times?

Are you willing to risk the lives of 100 other passengers, possibly including your own family members, just so you can check your email or voicemail or Facebook page one last time before the flight takes off? Turn off your damn phone, shut up, and deal with it.

I can understand the fact that you might have bought their video card after it has languished for many months on a vendor's shelf. So it's reasonable that they might require a receipt to prove you had the card for less than the warranty period. Requiring you to register the product is just asinine. They should be able to determine when the card was manufactured to know if it's theoretically possible that the card is still under warranty.

I have to give kudos to Seagate in this regard. I bought an external USB drive from them and it started fail after about a year of use. I checked their website, they determined the manufacturing date, saw that it was still under warranty, and sent me a replacement. No registration required. Hell, no receipt required.
