Step 1) Buy music from iTunes Step 2) Burn music to CD Step 3) Rip music from CD in format of your choice Step 4) Copy to device of your choice
Yes, it might be nice to do all of this in one step, but that wouldn't have made the iPod or iTunes as good of products as they are today. Why should Apple have to support every MP3 player under the sun?
I'm not *positive*, but I believe you are correct. I believe if you want any sort of other functionality, like voicemail, or any sort of menu system, it would be required. If you don't have those features, I don't really see the point of having a PBX though. You might as well use Skype or something similar.
Take it from me.. I work for one of those large close-sourced PBX companies. I love Asterisk. I think the initial jump in may be confusing to those who have never touched the command line before, but once you get the hang of it, it is much faster to configure than other PBX systems, and much more customizeable. Instead of having to use some special client to make a connection to the PBX server to make changes, all I have to do with Asterisk is SSH to the box and use vi ( of course ) on a couple of easy to understand text files. Asterisk can also interact with everything else on the box using perl or some of the built-in commands in Asterisk. So you could have it write to MySQL db, or email you everytime someone hits option "8" on the phone. All that is required for a simple VoIP system is an older machine ( preferrably 300mhz+ ), a NIC, and a sound card. This simple setup can get you up and running making phone calls from one softphone ( software based, no physical phone needed ) to another. Sign up with someone like nufone.net and start making outgoing calls. Or purchase a DID and have incoming as well.
How well did Doom 3 do this year compared to Half-life 2/Counterstrike Source? Doom 3 did not fair very well. Sure, everyone was excited about Doom 3 and it's singe player mode was fun, but once you beat it - the game was quite boring. The multiplayer aspect was well below par. Quake 4 was supposed to change that, but it doesn't seem to have taken off either. Multiplayer > Single player. period.
This isn't a wifi phone. It's a cordless phone, and it's base plugs into your computer through a USB cable. So I would say it's even more archaic. *BUT*, it is likely a wonderful alternative for a house phone for those who make lots of international calls or people who have lots of tech savvy Skype using friends.
Anyone remember the Empeg? The linux based car mp3 player that Rio bought and renamed? That thing was pretty slick. I still see them on Ebay every once in a while.
Although I haven't read the book this review is about. I recently purchased another book titled Web Standards Solutions: The Markup and Style Handbook by Dan Cederholm and found it very good for beginner's to XHTML and CSS. Even my wife, who's never dabbled in web design before is enjoying it. Also, quite a few of the chapter's in Dan Cederholm's book appear on his website if you want to get a feel for his writing style.

So Mr. Citron wants VoIP to not be regulated as a voice service, but as a data service. But says that blocking his data service is censorship of free speech? So if my ISP blocks me from accessing IRC, is that censorship of free speech? They are both data services right? Make you your mind Mr. Citron!
( I should note that I am a Vonage user, and dislike the blocking, but I do find this comical. )
You fail to realize that the typical user doesn't even know what those certificates are for. The Slashdot crowd is probably safe for the most part, but are your parents?

Your friends,
at Ebay/PayPal.
My dad now emails me very frequently to ask if one of his emails is real or fake. It seems like he gets a PayPal or Ebay phish every other day. I've tried to explain to him to hover over the link and make sure it says www.paypal.com or ebay.com and not a dotted ip address. But he doesn't get it. I understand why people do phishing scams, but the spam is driving customers away from all net advertising. This should be a wake-up call for these types of advertisers. They are driving customers away from any future sales.
here at work on a test machine, and at home on my XBOX! It's really incredible all the features that are available in Asterisk. Once you get the hang of the configs.. and there's probably only 3-4 configs you will mess with, it's a breeze. I have call routing rules setup to call my house phone, if I don't answer in so many seconds, it will dial out to my cell phone. Someone has also written a bluetooth presence script so it knows when your at your desk ( as long as the server is near your desk ) and when your gone so it knows which phone to call. Pretty slick. Not only is Asterisk been fun to play with, I've learned tons about telecom that I didn't know before.
Ok, try this.. drag the Slashdot logo into AOL instant messenger.. That should create a link to the picture of the person you were IMing. Now try highlighting this text and without copying and pasting, put it into Microsoft word.. All I have to do is highlight and drag it over.. how about this, when your reading your emails do the people who are signed onto AOL instant messenger have some sort of a notifier next to their name to show they are online? I'm barely scratching the surface here.
I'm a switcher too.. couple months ago I was about to build a new box.. last minute I walked into an Apple store and bought a 12" Powerbook. Liked it so much I sold my Dell laptop and bought my wife a 12" iBook. A month later an iPod.. I'm addicted. Everything just works. I still have my Unix, and an awesome GUI.. what more can you ask for? People don't realize that it's not just the eye candy. OS X has the best features. period. I can drag and drop text from anywhere onto anywhere, same with pictures. Spell checking is used throughout almost every application. And a lot of applications integrate with others, like iCal, etc.

Game analysis: Chinook has a small advantage.
There is code out there for running java based proxy servers on some networked printers, allowing you to gain further access into the network.

It's the same thing. You pre-pay for your minutes, then you use them. Then you pay for some more, and then you use them.

Can someone here tell me what kind of drugs the Katamari Damacy soundtrack producer was on? Cause I want some.
It's getting boring in here alone. If you do a new install, it's automagically in your phonebook.
Yes, it's called Mac OS X.. a close second being Gentoo. /me says goodbye to his karma.

Mark Spencer, the original creator of Asterisk and owner of Digium put Asterisk on an XBOX. Is he an idiot too?
