At the article it is possible to note that it is very difficult to find the responsable for the attacks. Who the authorities should blame ? The owners of the boxes that were compromised ? This is not justice, just try to hide the source and create a 'fake' solution. Before writing laws to arrest the spammers it is necessary to own/develop enough technology to trace and localize the attackers. Arresting a company owner on SF or Germany or Russia would not solve the problem if the attacker continues to walk free around the net.
... at linux gazette from this month (issue #95) about using an oscilloscope to view signas generated by some programs and how the multitasking operating system (linux in that case) behave when it has to process several things at the same time..
I am brazilian and I am glad to read that but even without the reading we can notice that the Gov. is increasing their support for Linux. I have already installed and configured several servers for brazilian's governament departaments and this is increasing more and more.
We are an under development country but some deveopled contry should learn a little from us.
I am glad to see some work like that, linking math, arts, culture, politics and cleverness. I wasn't aware about that sculpture but getting info about makes me feel good about the humans, I can see some hope at all at our future.
Remember that Simpsons Episode when Bart is playing a device such gameboy than he is asked to turn it off but when he does that the plane starts to crash.. and then
Well, more 200,000 Km it would have a 3rd floor at least [Moon] but I think that would be dangerous, you know, the Al Qaeda could stole or destroy the moon...
No one have ever said that Linux is the most secure OS, the security issue is up to the admin.
Open Source can be "blamed" for this numbers too, since the source code of most daemons/servers running under Linux is open, a cracker with good programming skills can read it, debug it and find flauts on it, exploiting them.
This is good when the new discovery is shared with the free software community, but black box'ing it goes against the main principles.
Thanks for what ? For helping to kill millions of people at the least 50 years ?
Dr. Teller leaded America to an important achieviement at nuclear and atomic research, and that is good, not just for USA but for mankind at all. He was a genius, no doubts about that.
But to use his IQ to destroy his own kind wasn't that clever, and we should think his achieviements as a good and usefull result to Earth and mankind, not only to a country. He was Hungarian remember ?
You americans think about you as Gods and other people are just scumb. This conception is very paradoxal concerning the "high evoluted level" of a nation as USA. You have to remember that USA is placed into Earth, and destroying it will destroy you too.
That is an important achieviment. New users may download old distros and see how it works.
It is easier to understand a simple code than a giant code, with huge modifications. That might be usefull to users who want to create their own distros/OS and don't know exactly from where to start.
We can not be sure about landing a probe safely in Mars, which is our neighboor. I think doing that sucessfully on the 'strange objects near Neptune' will be a little more difficult.
It may be 5 years old, but it's not the same as it was back in the day (say 2-3 years ago)... when it truely did 'google' the internet... Now it has all sorts of filters and junk.
That's the tendence. In 1992 the Internet was pretty different than it is today... I don't know why, but my guess is that some guys have noted the possibility to make money on it. Unfortunatelly my guess is that Google is going that way too, but I don't blame them. Until now, I think it is going fine. Hope they can go on that way for more 5 years.
I am sorry, but english isn't my native language. I am brazilian and I speak a great and good portuguese. You can be sure that I wouldn't laugh you if you made a mistake while trying to learn portuguese or another language.
I have not the enough money to travel abroad and get used to speak and write in english, so forgive me.
This tradeoff between security and freedom makes me remember that movie called Equilibrium, where people was prohibited to fell because felling and emotions are the cause of wars and terrorists acts.
Maybe USA wants to lead the world to a society like that, but it is appropriate to remember that USA doesn't own the Earth.
To fill that amount of time with worthfull TV content you would take about 30 or 40 years... that's too much time be in front of TV waiting for good shows.
Insted developing hardware to use with the actual TV specs they should use their minds to find out how to introduce a better content on TV...
Well, now he lives here on Earth, but I have serious doubts about his origins. He can be a Martian or just a Wookie undercovered as a human, who knows...
I think that's the change that Open Source creates at the business world: the companies must focus their objectives (and their proffit) at service offering based on their products, and not on license selling.
Smaller projects though may not have success that way, and some can think that this can monopolize the market.
Open source can be compared to *JUST COMPARSION* communism: it is beautifull at theory, but in practice it doesn't work perfectly. It is nice to "help our neighboor" and sentences like "helping each other is the bases of our society" [RMS] but is necessary to know how to apply this terms harmonilly within the capitalist world that we live nowdays.
The open source code isn't the final solution yet, though is a good step to achieve a higher position at humans evolution scale. There are challenges on its way, and we have to deal with that, either we want or not.
"People need drama in their lives. Games fulfil emotional and mental needs that cannot be fulfilled any other way"
The experience of living and interacting (trying to) with other humans are already drama. Well, I know what kind of drama she reffers, but she ought to consult a dictionarie before giving press interviews.
Since when en games are the ONLY way to fill emotional and mental needs ?
I am wondering if have already asked to Ms Fryer if she knows books, good music, or just a good and real game (chess i.e.).
I there are some good games, that make you think and make you a better person, indeed, but most of them are just crap.
And look who is talking about the "Human Natural" need for gamming, a XBox seller. A drug dealer would say that coke is good for your brain too.

Let's hope IBM can keep their foot in the door.
IBM seems to be a great allied (keeping their own interests of course)
At my university a partnership with IBM will result in two IBM powered labs running Linux.
I am brazilian and I am glad to read that but even without the reading we can notice that the Gov. is increasing their support for Linux. I have already installed and configured several servers for brazilian's governament departaments and this is increasing more and more.

Trying to erradicate diseases like Cancer, AIDS, etc is a better use for distributed computing IMHO.
participate with my elvish lab mouse ?

It would be more interesting to bind the cable to a monster truck and pull the cable down
After leaving the atmosphere how can one determine if it is going up or down ?
That's true and there is more.

I could go on with this discussion here but it would be too OT. If you want to go on with that please make contact by mail.

Money, that is all about money.
They [big blue] just want to sell their products, and as Linux
is the actual 'insight', they are investing on it.
The Free Software main philosophy is to help your neighboor,
to help our community [mankind], not making money.
Money is important, indeed, but it cannot have higher
priorities than our principles.
It is a nice equipament, but indeed, useless.
... that's too much
