"It should be noted that these percentages apply only to the handheld market, which for the purposes of this study excludes the widely-popular palmOne Treo 600. The Treo line has had a long history of reclassification, and often bounces back and forth between different market categories in different studies."
Gartner has had a long history of producing studies that suggest Palm is losing to Microsoft. Their latest tactic seems to be to exclude the best selling Palm product from their studies.
If you are never more than 15 feet away from a computer, you will probably never understand the benefit of a pda. My current job requires me to constantly be in the field and at someone else's mercy for electricity and computer/internet access. A pda allows you to take lots of files/documents/passwords etc with you without requireing you carry a laptop with you.
Once again this means nothing if you are never too far from you computer and are immobile.
There are lots of VGA pdas coming out soon

This is actually something the people who run googlewatch.org are worried about. They feel google's suggestion to archive and never delete will cause lots of privacy problems. Here's a quote from http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/
"After 180 days in the U.S., email messages lose their status as a protected communication under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and become just another database record. This means that a subpoena instead of a warrant is all that's needed to force Google to produce a copy. Other countries may even lack this basic protection, and Google's databases are distributed all over the world. Since the Patriot Act was passed, it's unclear whether this ECPA protection is worth much anymore in the U.S., or whether it even applies to email that originates from non-citizens in other countries."
I think it's odd that with all the things they did to these cards, they did not put them through a microwave. It's not like that would have been hard to do and should happen more often to cards than being nailed to a tree.

"Apple patented by Microsoft
Apparently, intellectual property does grow on trees.
Microsoft, amid an IP spree that has won the company patent protection for everything from XML dialects to video game storage methods, mistakenly received a patent on Tuesday for a new variety of apple tree.
U.S. Plant Patent 14,757, granted to Robert Burchinal of East Wenatchee, Wash., and assigned to Microsoft, covers a new type of tree discovered in the early 1990s in the Wenatchee area, a major commercial apple-growing region. Dubbed the "Burchinal Red Delicious," the tree is notable for producing fruit that achieves a deep red color significantly earlier than other varieties. It is sold commercially as the "Adams Apple."
Yes I know the patent has been acknowledged as a mistake but it makes you wonder how many of these 3000 patents are going to be approved because someone got tired of paying attention to the fine print.
Because you said that google.com existed for a while before froogle.com, I got curious and did a whois on google.com. I don't understand some of what I got back as a response. Here's a portion of it:

" Now THERE is your linux IM-EMAIL-VOIP killer app."
From the blurb: "It's out first for desktop Linux (maybe the start of a new trend?) but it's open source so expect a MSWin version shortly from Gaim team."
It's a possible killer app that is not exclusively linux. I don't see how that will make it a killer app for linux as much as I'd like it to be.
Although I have not really heard any complaints about scratches on the ipod mini, anodized metal scratches too. People who don't understand anodizing often complain that the paint on their Sony Clies is coming off even though the Clies are made with anodized magnesium. Anodized metal is better than paint because you can buff the scrathches out to some extent but people who like to whine will still do so.
"Shouldn't it work against both Kazaa and BT similarly? If kids are on vacation, they download less as a whole, so the decrease should be similar for both programs by my reckoning."
If we assume that kids have no interest in linux distros and other legitimate P2P uses and are dependent on P2P for copyrighted materials, then when kids are not online the majority of stuff that is still downloaded via P2P will be legitimate materials.
Since there are not many legitimate materials to download from kazaa, bittorent will come out ahead.
PUPPY Linux http://www.goosee.com/puppy/flash-puppy.htm
allows you to boot off a usb card and does not require a hard drive. Damn small linux and dynebolic are two other distros that work well with underpowered hardware and don't require harddrives but they both require cd drives.
We have different usage patterns so I guess our perceptions of snappy will be different. I rarely close any app that I use on my ibook so start times are something I hardly notice. The only time I start itunes, mail et al is right after a reboot (which according to uptime was 31 days ago).
For me snappiness is defined by things like how long it will take me to replace all instances of Phrase A in a 700 page word document with Phrase B. My XP box technically has more than twice the Mhz of my ibook and yet does not perform mundane tasks such as this any more swifly.
The fact that I have come to see Zone Alarm as a necessity has also caused me to view my PC as slow compared to my ibook.
" It's true to say that OS X has gottten a lot faster since it first came out... But it's still not as snappy as XP. I own Macs and PCs and you notice the difference the second you jump off your mac after working on it for a while and get on your XP box...
The Mac is now workable for any type of task... it's *that* fast... but it's still not where XP is."
I also use XP and OS X on a daily basis and don't find XP to be snappier at all. My XP box is a 2.8 Ghz Dell with 512 MB of RAM while my Mac is an 800 Mhz ibook with 640 MB of RAM.
If I turn Zone Alarm off, the two computers perform almost identically even though the Dell comp has the Mhz advantage. (I will not run an XP box without spybot and zonealarm. It's always amazing to see what windows apps phone home when you are using them.)
Ephod has to be installed for you to retrieve mp3s and while that may not be a big deal on your home computer you may want to try sharepod which allows you to copy songs from your ipod to your computer without any installation. Useful when dealing with someone else's computer. Here's a link: Sharepod.
Here's a quote from the page:
" wrote this program because none of my friends have an iPod, so of course don't have Ephpod/iTunes or similar installed on their computers.
With SharePod, nothing needs to be installed, the program is stored and run from your iPod. All you need to do is plug your iPod into a computer and run SharePod.exe
SharePod reads your iPod database and allows you to extract music files to your hard drive, either individually or by playlist.
You can also create Winamp playlists from the music on your iPod so you can listen to it without needing to copy the mp3 files to your computer.
If you are on a network, (e.g. at work/university) and you share the iPod drive on the network, other users can run your copy of SharePod from their own computers, and download music directly from your iPod! This allows P2P type music sharing just by plugging in your iPod:)
There are several programs out there which do these things and more, but are required to be installed on each computer first, or require large supporting files to be downloaded, which is a pain when round at a friends house.
VB source code is also available"
Cliesource.com had created a contest for the development of a compact flash driver for the Sony Clie line. Some developers said that Cliesource did not give developers enough time to develop a working driver but the contest did help getting a working driver into circulation.
" Automatically delete messages over a certain age.
The only reason people keep them around is that they're too lazy to delete them themselves. Not because they want to refer back to them.
It's a hell of a lot more irritating that email doesn't get through because your mailbox is full then it is if you lose the email of the latest oversized video file people were sending a year ago."
That would work nicely with accounts you check infrequently if you had the choice of "locking" some messages from being auto-deleted.
