I earn my salarie in local currency, that translated to u$s would be about 200 us dolars. With that money here, you aren't god, but you can live if you are creative enough, and do some coding on your own. o, right, this is/., i mean "I Live in Argentina, You Insensitive rich clod!"
In order to be FREE. All this "Free Software is Technically not as good as propietary software" or "Propietary Software is Technically not as good as Free Software" is pointless.
When the GNU Project was born, *NIX was there!, if the goal of the GNU project were to improve technically, rms wouldn't have done what he has done, instead he will be working for AT&T, improving Unix, or just keep his job at MIT.
This is about Freedom, if i tell you that you can be Free to use the most incredible tool know to man with total Freedom to do whatever you feel rigth, and you tell me that you need to import your Quicken data, then you don't diserve This Freedom.
>>we could say the work was flat, but it was not >>till we were able to look at it from an external >>view.
Actually, we defined the shape of earth long before we could travel onto space, and actually seen earth from an external view point. Comparing things we don't understand yet with very familiar things, is actually a good thing, the ability to abstract over some defined problem is mandatory, but the ability to come down to earth and compare that problem with what we allready know, and come with a good analogy, will open your mind and let you then abstract over it.
- It's Stable (Windows is very unstable, so this project will be too) - It's Free as in Freedom (Not anymore in this case, since it depends on a propietary software, like we discussed a few articles ago about Java) - It's Free as in Free Beer (Again, not, since you has to pay for windows) - It's Unix (What's the point of running Unix on Windows when you can run Windows on Unix?)
So, this takes away all the advantages of GNU. The GNU Project started in '83 with the goal of making a FREE Operating System, don't you think that porting all the work that has been done to propietary plataforms is like laughing at this? I think the people that writes this kind of projects, may have good intentions, but are missing the hole purpose of GNU.
We should work to improve tools that lets you run Windows apps on Unix, not apps that do the opossite.
This "Google is God" concept is really interesting, We (Geeks) tends to have a "good guy" and a "buy guy" in the bigs company world, IBM has been the bad guy for years, m$ / sco could be thought as the bad boys, and google seemed to be a good guy candidat all the time, it's run by one of us, could it be otherwise?. But what is really interesting, is, beyond the fact that some geeks has gone out of proportion in their google dependence, many non geeks has too!. So the word Google has gone out to the streets, When you see all your techies friends has the same page as their Mozilla's home page, you just say "Slashdot, you are powerfull"; but when you see lots of non-techies that has the same page as their IE's Home page, and that page is not sport / porn related, Then we should start worring.
So, m$ is going to allow them to use old machines that will performe poorly in a legal manner using the systems they are no longer able to sell (so they don't loose money), on machines that are out of the range of their possible customers (since none of the systems m$ is actually selling will run on less than 400 mhz,128 mb, 4 gb)
People could be using LTSP (or just DHCPD + TFTP + NFS + X11 + {PXES,Thinstation,Any Little distro})
That way they would have lots of low end PCs, that will performe BETTER than a new pc running windze xp, at no cost, and using only Free Software.
I Think the reasons of why people still uses windoze are explained on today's poll.
Well, IIS and ISS are actually very similar. They both Costs a fortune, weight a lot, and they can fall at any time, without any chance to get them up again.
Slashdot gets spammed every day, and not only with publicity. Actually, i don't care very much about comercial spam, because it's rather easy to filter with bayesian filters. Actually other kinds of spam, like those carring viruses are harder to filter, and more annoying, since the intentions are differents, and so the spammers sends MORE emails every day than commercial ones. So good i don't use windoze:)
Functional Programming sounds to me as Pascal put upside down: Pascal Doesn't let the coder make mistakes. This lets the coders make mistakes, and just ignore those.. This may sound ok, but it helps you create big nasty bugs that will go unnoticed until they popup and ruins your life. It's actually easier to debug such things in languages like C or ASM.(Not only easier to debug, but also harder to create such a monster)
Are they goingo to have Internet access? Don't be surprised if we start seeing posts like "... I am a Disembodied Location-specific Conversational Agent, You insensitive Clod!"
If they actually taked Hotmail into account, i am sure it's the main source of spam. May be not for the big spammers, they have their own smtps, but those spams are the easier to block, i mean, come-on, if it says viagra, no mother how obfuscated.. bayesians take care of it. But, let me tell you, lots of little spammers hurts more than one big, and those people uses mostly hotmail to spam. Besides this, I sysadmin, and let me tell you, once i did something like "grep -i hotmail maillog > hotmail; grep -v hotmail maillog > realmail; ls -lh"; let me tell you, the hotmail file was REALLY bigger than realmail.... Not only spam, also most of legitimate mail goes through hotmail. I Know it can't be done, but banning hotmail would help a lot.-
Why is a comment that HASN'T BEEN RATED, rated as overrated?, overrated by whom? I think it wasn "overrated" the word the moder was looking for, it was "overflowe", "buffer overflow", in your head, massively destroying yoru allready frighten brain. Mod me down. I have been so badly moded lately that i just don't care anymore. Take a look at http://slashdot.org/~GNUALMAFUERTE and explain me how can i have bad karma... Just Hit me and call me Marta.
The whole thing about "free software" is a lie. It's a dream created and made popular by people who have a keen interest in having cheap software so that they can drive down their own cost and profit more or by people who can easily demand it, because they make their money out of speaking at conferences or write books about how nice it is to have free software
No Richard!!, don't do that, aiiiee, no, not in the face...
Where did the money go? I can't really remember where it all went, but I guess "lot of partying" or "Girls, Drugs and Rock'n'Roll" would be a reasonably good explanation. Hey, I was 21 and that's what one is supposed to do at that age, right?
oo, off course, there wasn't slashdot subscriptions at that time... now i get it:)
i has been looking at the specs... It has a PIV 512 mb DDR inside... there is this USB webcam hidden, it is based on Slackware 9.1, uses xawtv... mm... they seem to stick with the old X version too...:)
Well, RMS created the Free Software Movement, which predates the OpenSource movement, and all this other Free licenses... So, i think that the licenses has to adapt to the GPL, not the GPL to other licenses...; besides, if you Beleive in Free Software, there is no real reason to use a license other than the GPL.
We should, more than ever, show that we are a community, to show that we have similar goals and we are not going to spread living people on their own. If we don't show stability, people won't think that Free Software is more than just a hobby. This license diversity just confuses people; and it's not really necesary, As long as it's free software, you shouldn't care. Just use the GPL, if you think it's to protective, use the lesser, that is why it's there.
Yep, there are _lots_ about any subject, but the fact is that:
a) There is no many people in there... b) They don't last more than a year. c) They only has ocational readers. d) And the more important thing: those forums are a big disaster, many people slashdotters complain lately about slash, let me tell you that in those forums you name, noone hear what the others has to say, everyone flames everyone, and they are full of spam.
It's easy to maintain a good comunity of 30 readers, it's NOT to maintain a good climax in a site where thousands of people a day reads/posts. The only examples of forums with lots of regular readers/posters that is not a disaster are slashdot, some usenet groups, and some very technical lists, like the LKML.

Why do we use GNU/Linux?
- It's Stable (Windows is very unstable, so this project will be too)
