I like the part where there's this worry that the foil will somehow block the heat transfer. Right. If you believe that, wrap your hand in tinfoil and stick it in a fire.

    1. Your example is primarily covective/radiation, where the heat transfer in question is primarily through conduction. It isn't a very good analogy.
    2. The issue isn't the conductivity of the foil, it's the contact surface. When you have imperfect contact it works like an additional resistance. If you measure the temperatures of the two surfaces you'll see something like a disconinuity between the two. Thermal paste conforms to each of the surfaces, reducing the effect of the contact resistance. Remember, convection is generally negligible for small characteristic lengths. Radiation is also a small factor when you're looking at the temperatures inside of a computer.

There are very large immigrant populations in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. As the grandparent pointed out they're mostly from Asia & Africa. Though the actual number is probably much smaller than the US, remember Canada is only about 1/10th its size. I'm not sure what the proportions are, but having spent the last few years in Toronto, I wouldn't be so quick to make your conclusion.

Fiscally, they are comparable to the Dems/Reps in the US, except the Conservatives in Canada want to cut spending along with taxes, rather than just the latter.

Of course the leader of the Liberals well known for his massive spending cuts. Also note that the last Tory government racked up record levels of debt while the current liberal government has placed Canada as the only G8 country without a deficit. I don't think there's really an idealogical difference between the (old Tories) and the Liberals, at least fiscally.

On the first point, I don't know where the Grandparent was coming from. All major Canadian parties are way 'left' of the republicans, and in most cases the democrats too. What would happen if a Canadian party suggested ending public healthcare? What would happen if an American party seriously hinted at implementing public health-care?

The Reform-Tory merger will change things, but overall I hope that the old guard take control over the (new) Conservative party so that there's a reasonable alternative to Liberal east of Manitoba.
