Admiral Farragut was given his first command (a prize ship) during the War of 1812 when he was twelve years old.

For every Farragut, there are THOUSANDS who "took a prize ship" into their dock and ended up with a LOT less fanfare as a result.

Consequently, the boatmasters also ended up with child support payments.

At least now that this stuff is available to the public, the public can push for better regulations and controls over what is allowed to pass.

If it exists, criminals will already have it. If it's public, it's a larger priority for those that (sometimes) represent us.

  3. As a DAD... this is NOT a Good Thing(tm)... on Teachers Union Opposes Virtual K-8 Charter School · · Score: 1

Not only does online schooling require TONS of self-discipline, part of the bond forged early on between an instructor and a student is vital. There is an underlying, yet HEALTHY level of stress involved with keeping up with the others, observing and being a part of other's educations regarding social norms, and modeling your 'early life' behavoirs in general.

K-8 graders require the basics, but also, require personal attention. How many attention disorders, or learning disabilities are diagnosed by observation early in life? The social aspects of learning and fitting in are so important because they model our behavoir in the more important secondary schooling we receive.

Having taken many college courses online and also having been "bored" at HS, normally this is AGAINST my stance on online learning. However, after 8th grade, I'm cool with it. By then the children have an idea of how to fit in, start realizing what their ambitions are, etc. While HS is very important in my opinion, some excel here and can use the more direct attention (to learning, not the person learning) to succeed faster online - I know I would have and would have loved to have moved on to college even a year sooner.

My children are in the first stages of K-8 and after fathering carefully for several years now, I can honestly say that in school, they learn MUCH more in the group environment than they would on their own. While I have taught them how to read, write, and do simple maths, there are so many other things that only other peers their age can teach. Things that will grow parts of their personality NO online software could.

At this stage in life, it's almost not too profound to expect them to learn LITTLE about advanced topics. Hell, they're still learning how to LEARN!

I believe in home schooling and online classes, but not for K-8. Even homeschooling does more than plop them in front of a monitor and expect them to learn. The successful people in a company, and in LIFE, are the networkers who know how to take intelligence, form it with social skills, and fuse the two into a mastery of social psychology and the topic they immerse their life in. Be it real estate, technology, health, etc.

I'd love the extra cardio from riding a bike, but when the temperature is about to hit 115+ degrees here in Arizona within a matter of months, it's so HOT (you can actually feel your body being directly affected by the direct heat) that doing anything short of dumping ice in your pants won't help.

We have the light rail as well as some other transit options coming, and Tempe is pretty bike-friendly, but unless the companies we work for that demand us to dress a certain way, get there by a certain time, etc. modify things, we're stuck doing the best we can to get out of our house in time to get to work on time.

As others have said here, I think ultimately this will be just like the gas crunch, spyware, and other bottlenecks we seem to squeeze ourselves into.

As a (very bad, busy, and yeah.. lazy) bodybuilder, I do my best to avoid the marketing hype in the grocery store when shopping, but I believe that just like we need to run spyware removal tools, like we go out of our way to save a little gas, etc. - this is not something that will go away.

Anyone as a kid remember doing things like bragging about that 24 pack of mountain dew you just drank, taking 3-4 wonderfully white pieces of bread, squishing them together, and just sinking your teeth into that white goodness? High Fructose Syrup and everything being "Enriched" (test your "wheat bread" - is the first ingredient whole wheat or enriched wheat [read: white] bread?) is going to cause this to be just another thing we have to deal with.

There is no fountain of youth, and every new invention is a potential pandora's box waiting to happen, just seems we're getting our come-up-ens now. All of the marketing hype says "NO FAT!" or "REDUCED FAT!" but what they don't say is "WE JUST UPPED THE SUGARS, THAT'S ALL". What about the great chocolate getting marketed now as sugar-free when in fact there's a good possibility it'll metabolize in your body just like sugar and be transported as such?

The nice thing is, if this proves to be true, it should toss some accountability to those that normally want nothing of the sort.

    Old Convo:
Me: So, puttin on a little for the winter?

Fatty Fatty McFatty: Oh no, I caught the fat. This dude was eating an OMFGWTFHAXBBQ sandwich, coughed, and sure enough, I got infected with the fat :(
Me: Ouch, I guess you'll have to come up with a fat management plan then, eh?
Fatty Fatty McFatty: Oh shit, I actually have to DO something about this now?

    ...

Point of the story is, that no matter if the fat came with ya, ya caught it, or you just don't diet healthy, folks should hopefully start to allow accountability into their lives. If you were BORN with AIDS, nothing you can do, just hope for a cure. If you CAUGHT AIDS, you're probably more likely to want to fix it, as you actually remember life before-hand. Sometimes, the idea that God DIDN'T make you that way (the AI for his ID extension hasn't been patched for FF 1.5 yet), allows reason to kick in, hopefully.

Folks have got to learn more about their bodies nowadays or face the consequences. Hopefully this helps some of those that are too lazy to help themselves. If not, always a good time to get into the healthcare field, lol.
