  3. Media Coverage on ESRB Revokes San Andreas Rating · · Score: 1

It's all about the media (blogs, game sites) coverage. Nobody would give a damn about this easter-egg - thats what it is - if there wouldn't be that interest in the media.

I mean, I'd never patch my GTA to have the scene unlocked, because it would be to much hassle for a CGI rendered (what is it?) blow-job scene? Just enter an accordant string in Google and you'd find much harder pictures/movies.

The fact that Senator Clinton is that interested in incident is funny enough.

I think, it's a well-planned PR trick from Rockstar Games.

  4. Apple to Pears? on What Mac OS X Could Learn From Windows · · Score: 1

I think that it doesn't make sense to compare Windows to OSX or - say - KDE or Gnome. "What can learn OSX from Windows?" - That's not a serious question.

Microsoft is putting out patches from time to time to fix vulnerabilities, but thats all. Apple releases feature upgrades every now and then. And thats the major difference. Realisticly, it'll take another one or two years until Windows users will have transparent windows and eye-candies like you can see on OSX. ONE to TWO years!

Sure, there might be some features that could be "ported" over to OSX, but it'll take just a few months until they'd be available.

The development-cycle of MS Windows is just too slow nowadays. Nothing really happens anymore. If I see a Windows-box at work, I feel like last century and I guess that a lot of customers are feeling the same. All the "inventions" in Longhorn are already there: OSX, KDE(!), Gnome, and if not, they'll be implemented in the next time.

MS is just too slow. It's just rediculous. The world is not like it was ten or twenty years ago, where it was easy to paint a one-OS-monopoly for MS. The potential customers are realizing that the real inventions are happening somewhere else.

BTW: Some of the majer "analysts" are saying the same and I hope that the shareholders are realizing whats going on with MSFT.

  5. 400.000? on 400,000 Windows Users Switch To Mac · · Score: 1

First question: 400.000 users in what timeframe?

Sure, more and more "users" are switching to a more modern operating system. The development of Windows has stalled since years - in the customers perception. So what do you expect?

Apple seems to put much more effort in the OS development than Microsoft, because MS is focused on so many other target groups/products, like the new XBox360 and so on.

It takes another year until the next version of Windows comes out and I don't know, but it'll take at least another five years until they announce the next version after Longhorn.

There is one rule, that works out pretty fine in the software "industry": "release soon, release often", and thats what Apple's doing.

Times are over, where you had a os-monopoly when you released a major update every decade. MS is going the wrong direction: downhill.

Disclamer: I'm a Linux-user since 14 years, but I'm very impressed by Apple since a few years. Go on!

  6. Demarc on Network Intrusion Detection and Prevention? · · Score: 1

IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems) are all fine. Snort is in my opinion the best system around. The difficult part is the overview over the whole network. You can set up Snort at your border gateways to collect all the attacs, but in my experience you'll not pay attention to the alerts after a while (half a year). There are just to many alerts every day.

The best solution you can get so far is a product which was called "Demarc PureSecure" not long ago. It is based on Snort, does file integrity checks and monitors all your services, disk space, CPU and a lot more.

The cool thing about that solution is the web-based centralized management console. You can update the (Snort-)roule-sets at once, and have a look at all the attacks to your network in a browser window. It's the most sophisticated and most underestimated system around. Just have a look:

    Demarc

Most of the commercial IDSs are based on snort, but the Demarc stuff is what you need for larger networks.

Disclamer: I don't have anything to do with the company behind Demarc, but I know, that this solution is pretty unknown to most of the admins out there.

  7. DST on One Step Away from Changing Daylight Savings Time · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'd be so happy if "they" would give up the daylight saving time. All my clocks are running UTC and I'm just calculating the local time on the fly since years. It's much easier than setting all my watches and clocks all the time. In the broadcasting business nobody cares about any time offsets anyway. It's all about UTC.

The funny thing is, that the switchover is not happening at the same date worldwide. That makes the whole problem more difficult.

It's confusing enough for me, that for example LA is nine (or ten!) hours "back".
