I mean why dont you just skip that theres going to be xbox live for FREE in each 360? that you'll have a cool IM system, with some tivo like features mentioned? or that you could even design and sell stuff for games online? point 2: this is slashdot land of the "gameplay first, graphics second! damn it!" motto, and now it turns out we are completely signing out a console because the other flashed some pretty graphics at us? nice bias there bub!
I admit some games shown had lesser graphics (in some cases not, I mean check out gears of war!) but they were all ONLINE capable. In ghost recon 3 each window that pop out was an online partner trying to tell you something or showing you a location in a map, doesnt that add a lot to strategic gameplay?
Is a bit too early to cast out an opinion on this, at least an intelligent, unbiased opinion that is.

Yes, first of all, the stages now are interactive and multi-tier like those in DOA or Mk: Deception, second you can fight online now, and third is soulcalibur! in case you missed it, soul calibur 2 (specially in art) is the closest to videogame perfection you can find, forget tekken, soulcalibur is simply amazing (go and give SC2 a rental if you dont believe me)
Hint: (theres strong rumors, both tekken and soulcalibur will be released in all consoles soon, they just need to be ps2 exclusive for a few months first ala GTA )
This is my last chance to predict the name will be "xbox next" not 360.( but by now Im not sure). check the time this was posted.
Why xbox next? Theres a nice puzzle in colony.org revealing that in ascii code, also xbox360.com has been bought by some kid. xboxnext.com belongs to MS and last but not least, gamasutra has the console listed as "xbox next".
We shall see if I was right in about 2 hours.

I agree, the Woman eating the phone was kind of funny, since it was a bit unexpected. (although pointless as well)
But the other two: some guy screams in his office in extasis while watching his screen and then it explodes, some guy loses his head while using his laptop, Hmm.. wheres the punchline? wheres the difference from this commercial to any other AD mentioning some new spec on a tv or a car? or some new tv series?
Oh... and one hint, you shouldnt label something funny as "funny", laughter comes out of surprise and irony, its a lot more difficult to make someone laugh if you constantly remind him/her what they are watching is "funny" since you are ruining the surprise.
Anyway, whats the big surprise? square already had deals with Nintendo and the result was the highly polemic FF: CC which had more "legend of mana" and "teletubby" look than FF but still managed to be a good game. (although no true FF fan would drool over it) and xbox users well.. MS has a guy who worked in FF. so cheering is optional.
FF is still controlled by Sony, FF XII is coming for ps2/3 (for better or worse since a lot of reviewers have bashed it by now)
(and no I dont have a ps2, so Im not a "fanboi" actually I havent played a true FF since I sold my ps1, oh good times.)
OT: You know what is beginning to get me worried?, sometime along the day we will know Everything about the PS3 and I just realized whatever it is is going to be a real surprise. Sony didnt flashed, hyped or "leaked" info about it, so anything they say is going to caught us almost unprepared. and that includes actual info about Final Fantasy and square (at least I hope)
More likely: "confirmation of all the information we leaked all over the internet;)"
I guess it may be called an unveiling for those who havent checked the web,tv and comics for at least 2 months or so.

What? what are you talking about? PacMan was a HUGE technological marvel back in its day! The sprites were alot more defined than any other game, it had a "neon" light effect in the maps, the sound consisted in something more than "beeps" and it was the first game with actual AI and a real map! (which changed each level) even today amateur coders have a bad time trying to pull pacman clones that actually feel and look authentic. (just look at the terrible Atari 2600 port for further reference) this was "doom 3 meets hl2" 25 years ago!
Sorry but the "gameplay versus nice graphics/features" is pointless. sure nice graphics and features dont make a game, but they do provide an excellent background for good gameplay, otherwise is like michellangelo painting with 2 crayons, or amadeus using one of those tiny electronic pianos, even if they create a masterpiece is not as good as it could be if they used the correct tools. Period.
Actually I would hold back on modding it. Xbox live is not going to be available for modded consoles, and since (Aparently) is going to be free (or have a free mode at least) that could be a major handicap since all games are going to be compatible to live one way or another.
Besides the dash is going to look and work like avalaunch or evolutionx (which are the best dashes to have in a modded xbox these days) The only thing I will be really missing is the ability to have games stored on the hard drive for easy access (theres not even a mention if theres going to be a hdd or not) but you have to take the good with the bad.

Whatever lag other client have will affect you too while you are interacting with it in the normal MMORPG.
It May look that way but actually is not, the server (or the client) is capable of interpolating the data between packets transmitted, also is able to timeout a client if it lags too much. So although it influences lag, is only until the server chooses to kill it off.
In the central server case clients connect through the server. In the distributed case they connect directly.
Exactly, but the way communication works is that you must be connected to each client you are sending data to. (other wise you will be "hand shaking" each client each time you connect to each user and lag would be even worst)
Since you are usually only connected to a server, this is not noticeable, but in the peer to peer case you are connected to ALL users (or to a limited area). that means you are sending your data to all those who are playing with you. And that means your bandwidth must be big enough to handle this. And (at this time) in most cases is not. The motto "each one is a server" enters in function.
Also.. And heres the biggie, how do you know what is the ip of each user that connects? a central server is needed for that and therefore you still depend on a centralized server.

Yeah right, look it may be an "advent" for marketting to use ARGs as a really cheap campaign aimed at geeks, but the truth remains, only geeks, real uber geeks even become interested in ARGs and just a small percent of them (unemployed or students) follow them for more than a week. thats definetily not "mainstream" by any means.
Probably the most succesful ARG ever was "Ilovebees" but then this was because a lot of people thought a surprise demo of halo2 was involved (which it wasnt). and for the international players (which were quite a few) MS cut them off the loop by making phone calls in the US only. The final event took place in sometown close to MS offices I think. (meaning it was a waste of time for 90% of players)
Until theres some interesting price for beating an ARG and not just the "intellectual achievement" (Im talking about some hard cold cash, a console or better) and also the makers of this sort of games realize WWW means "world wide web" not "Close to Washington, Wyoming, Why not canada", I really dont think ordinary people would ever become interested in one. And even then uber geeks (unemployed ones) will have the upper hand all the time.
I thought that xbox360 was going to use the ageia physics card? (they said at least one console was going to use it) if the console using it is the ps3 or revolution (although I doubt it) I think my money is going elsewhere.
Unfortunately this is nothing "new" a good bunch of indie developers have tried to keep down the costs of creating a indie mmorpg by not having a central server (include myself to that list), and keeping it peer to peer instead.
However so far is a lot more of theory (and some mixed bag tech demos) than actual results. Lets face it, if a super MMORPG (like WOW) is having trouble to keep a lag free (more or less) environment by using centralized state of the art equipment and systems with lots of bandwidth to spare. What chances does a run of the mill client in a home PC have? (which is usually connected to a bandwidth sucker proxy which is connected to a bunch of dumb users with a lot of spyware installed) a: none. The lag would be completely unbareable is hardly noticeable for web surfing but for a system sending an update of several dozens of users each 2-3 seconds is a killer.
In the future we are going to see more systems like "guild wars" in which areas are instantiated for a limited number of users (including user based servers I think) instead of one server farm trying to handle all the users all the time. Now thats an idea that actually works! (although it takes the "massive" mostly out of the equation.) and it should be interesting for small developers.

Sorry, but If Namco and Bandai have merged that means they dont need anyone else, Namco and Bandai (together) sum up to a lot of money and some very good and strong franchises.
(Besides if N wanted to merge with Bandai they certainly wouldnt have taken Namco, someone said NO at that final contract Im not sure which though)
I do agree their titles should be multi platform and theres a strong rumor soulcalibur 3 and tekken 5 will be available for xbox and gc soon.
Either we FINALLY get some good Dragon Ball Z/anime games (or at least not as crappy) or all Namco games get merged with anime characters and are launched at subpar quality.
Either way prepare to read this line in the future:
Jokes aside, it does make sense, Xbox had (really) bad sales in Japan and theres little to indicate that will change to a point where the xbox 2 becomes japan top console (in MS dreams perhaps), and then on the other hand Nintendo next console just doesnt sound promising enough, we know little about it, but what we know is old hat tech (hard drive, wi fi, gyroscope controls) and is unlikely for it to be the console wars winner.
So theres a good chance of Sony winning the console wars again. Not because its necesarily better, but due to its competitors not beating it in its own game: the Japanese market and the huge array of japanese developers and fanbase behind it. I mean, Right now MS is celebrating just because they have one of the creators of FF in the payroll, while Sony has FF as a pseudo exclusive franchise.
Theres a chance that xbox2 might come second in Japan but it depends on Nintendo next gen performance. we shall wait and see.
If you want to know Silent hill is a bit "artistic" and obscure so you need to give a representation to it, here is a version Ive read around and liked the most. (of course beware of the spoilers!)
At some point James died, then he got called to Silent Hill (HELL) to meet his wife, he had forgotten what happened to her, he descents layer by layer into the pits of demons and tortured souls like Eddie and Laura (aparently you are tortured by representations of your sins, guilt and fears who become your personal demons) there he meets his personal demons: Maria (a young and "spicy" version of his wife) and the pyramid head (a representation of guilt and punishment).
At the end he remembers what happened: _he killed his wife_ because she was suffering too much due to a disease, depending on how well you did you either forgive yourself (good endind) or you are bound to an eternity of suffering and guilt (bad ending) Or you find out that a silly talking dog is who orchestrated all (joke ending!)
Btw. Silent Hill is hell because thats what happens in Silent hill 1 a satanic cult opens "the nightmare world" to let a demon (Samael) take posession of a kindred (created by black magic) human girl (Samara) so hell is "mixed" with our world in Silent Hill and acts as a shifting portal between both.

The xbox is on top of the playstation (yeah right MS!) but why is Nintendo on another window? they dont consider it a competitor... or is it something else?

How come all next gen consoles are going to be presented in may 12 and e3 except revolution (or maybe they are showing revolution?) why MTV mentioned in its original comercial "a new event, a revolution... "
Some points to freak you out:
Nintendo has been extremely quiet about their console. (more quiet than usual actually)
MS Main intention with x2 is to capture the japanese market. which they are _certain_ to do this time. (why?)
MS refused to create a handheld, even though they could have (an agreement?)
N and MS had been rumored to joint forces for a project to beat sony for years. Lots of economists have mentioned it would be equally beneficial for both.

Sorry, but If Namco and Bandai have merged that means they dont need anyone else, Namco and Bandai (together) sum up to a lot of money and some very good and strong franchises. (Besides if N wanted to merge with Bandai they certainly wouldnt have taken Namco, someone said NO at that final contract Im not sure which though) I do agree their titles should be multi platform and theres a strong rumor soulcalibur 3 and tekken 5 will be available for xbox and gc soon.
Either we FINALLY get some good Dragon Ball Z/anime games (or at least not as crappy) or all Namco games get merged with anime characters and are launched at subpar quality.

Jokes aside, it does make sense, Xbox had (really) bad sales in Japan and theres little to indicate that will change to a point where the xbox 2 becomes japan top console (in MS dreams perhaps), and then on the other hand Nintendo next console just doesnt sound promising enough, we know little about it, but what we know is old hat tech (hard drive, wi fi, gyroscope controls) and is unlikely for it to be the console wars winner.
So theres a good chance of Sony winning the console wars again. Not because its necesarily better, but due to its competitors not beating it in its own game: the Japanese market and the huge array of japanese developers and fanbase behind it. I mean, Right now MS is celebrating just because they have one of the creators of FF in the payroll, while Sony has FF as a pseudo exclusive franchise.
Theres a chance that xbox2 might come second in Japan but it depends on Nintendo next gen performance. we shall wait and see.

If you want to know Silent hill is a bit "artistic" and obscure so you need to give a representation to it, here is a version Ive read around and liked the most. (of course beware of the spoilers!)
At some point James died, then he got called to Silent Hill (HELL) to meet his wife, he had forgotten what happened to her, he descents layer by layer into the pits of demons and tortured souls like Eddie and Laura (aparently you are tortured by representations of your sins, guilt and fears who become your personal demons) there he meets his personal demons: Maria (a young and "spicy" version of his wife) and the pyramid head (a representation of guilt and punishment).
At the end he remembers what happened: _he killed his wife_ because she was suffering too much due to a disease, depending on how well you did you either forgive yourself (good endind) or you are bound to an eternity of suffering and guilt (bad ending) Or you find out that a silly talking dog is who orchestrated all (joke ending!)
Btw. Silent Hill is hell because thats what happens in Silent hill 1 a satanic cult opens "the nightmare world" to let a demon (Samael) take posession of a kindred (created by black magic) human girl (Samara) so hell is "mixed" with our world in Silent Hill and acts as a shifting portal between both.
