  1. My long-winded Best Buy editorial on Best Buy Says Customers Not Always Right · · Score: 1

I'm not afraid to admit that I work for Best Buy. I don't agree with everything that goes on (sometimes I feel like there's major brainwashing happening. I've rolled many an eye.), but from day one, I have been highly impressed by the quality of the customer service that is provided by my particular store. I've worked retail before...CompUSA for about a year and a half, and I saw all sorts of bad. In fact, not much long after I left, pretty much all of the managers were either fired, transfered out, or forced to leave. At this Best Buy, I've seen employees go above and beyond for the customer. It's not to say we're going to bend over and take shit from a trouble customer, but we do everything we can to keep the customer happy. And this is not hack, this is sincere. I'm about as cynical as they come. I'm highly impressed by the employees at my store.

A little about me. I pride myself on being an honest, trustworthy person. I have no need to lie to customers on anything, be it answering a simple question or selling a computer system (I sell computers, by the way). When I first started working there, I decided that I would do a personal experiment: I would sell with complete honesty, and see how well it works. How did it go? Since the beginning, I had been given practically full time hours, and I am now a full timer. I'm often referred to as one of the best salesmen (sincere or not, I don't know, but I believe it). I don't lie to customers. I don't say "Oh yeah, this PSP covers everything." No, in fact I point out some of the major things the PSP isn't going to cover, and that hasn't seemed to cost me a PSP sale. The thing is, what a PSP doesn't cover aren't even covered by manufacturers (accidental damage, cosmetic damage, viruses and software issues), so it's not like they're losing out.

When I don't know something about a product, I don't fudge it, and I don't understand why people even try to fudge it. My geek credibility means a lot to me, and I don't feel the desire to make up some bullshit story when somebody asks me "what does this do?" and I have no idea. I tell them, "You know, I'm not really sure, but I would think that maybe this is what it does...but that's just a theory." Is that so hard to tell a customer? I know some customers that obviously know what they're talking about try to test me. They want to see me squirm. I don't give them the satisfaction. I don't work at Best Buy because I like selling, I work there because I like talking to people about computers.

Those who disagree with this article or raise a stink about it either A) are the customers who this article is targeting, or B) have never worked retail in their lives. I never, ever, in any job, believed that "the customer is always right." This is simply not true. This gives customers the right to be assholes, the right to demand being treated superhumanly because they decided to speak up, the ability to think that they are right and you're wrong. In all my experience in retail, I love the asshole customers the most. It brightens my day to see some prick go off the wall about something. "Oh, you mean I bought these computers from you and you won't service them?" "Did you buy the PSP?" "No." "Well, the reason why we offer the PSP is because things like this do happen. Unfortunately when you purchased your computer, you made the decision that you would not need it, and unfortunately that means we cannot service your system free of charge." I've dealt with that many of times...I've seen many an asshole customer.

The PSP is hardly a scam. If you knew the insides and outs of them, you could see the benefit and then make an *informed* decision as to whether you want it or not. If someone offers it to you and you flat out deny it, you didn't even give the guy a chance to explain it to you. If someone flat out says "No" after I say "Let's talk a little bit about the PSP," I say "You know, I'm sorry but this is part of my job. If you'd allow me to explain a few things and then you can make your decision..." I don't com

  3. Meeting people is easy on Do You Really Want to Meet People on the Web? · · Score: 2, Interesting

For people like me who are socially retarded, the internet is a wonderful place to meet people. I've been meeting people from the net for the past 5 or 6 years, and I haven't had a single bad experience. It was exciting to finally meet and hang out with people who shared the same interests as me. Face it, when you're a total computer nerd with elitest tastes in music, people who share those interests are pretty few and far between. What better way to meet people with those interests than, say, a forum for one of your favorite bands?

So far, thanks to the internet, I've met a number of amazing people. I met my first somewhat girlfriend over the net, I met a band who I ended up joining and moving out to PA to be a part of (then stole the drummer's girlfriend and had my first true love for 2 1/2 years). As recent as this week, I met a girl who I'll be travelling from my home state of MI to IN to go to a concert with.

You do get a good sense of what people are like by chatting online. You say things without inhibition. There aren't any social hangups. You don't have to worry about ackward silence. You can bail out at any time. You can say how you really feel without stuttering or blushing.

The best frozen dinners, no contest, are the Boston Market frozen dinners. I've been eating them regularly for the past several months, and I'm telling you, in a taste test I doubt you could tell that it was a frozen dinner. It tastes just like a home cooked meal. Cook em in the oven for the best results. The food actually tastes real unlike the other frozen dinners. A++++++++ highly recommended!!!!

  6. Extended service plans on Obtaining Replacement Parts for Your Laptop? · · Score: 2, Informative

I'm glad this was brought up, because I thought about sending in an "ask slashdot" on how slashdot viewers feel about extended service plans. I work for a major retailer (one which is mentioned on this site a lot) and sell these myself, and I get lot of people saying like, "My brother says to never get this, etc. etc.," and I'd like to know what people have against them.

In all honesty, I could go either way on an extended service plan on a desktop. Never use past experiences with PCs as a benchmark for what your new PC will operate like, cause it could be completely different. It could fail after 6 months. I've seen people with failed screens and failed harddrives who back after a few weeks. This is why we offer the service plans, because you never know what could happen. To someone like me, who can do all the work himself, it's nice to cover the parts. If the monitor and system were covered (which, depending on the price range, is sometimes the case), I'd probably get it. Otherwise, it depends on the cost and who's dealing with it (Circuit City sends out *all* their systems regardless, whereas CompUSA and Best Buy do most of their work in-house, unless it requires a specific part to be ordered in).

Laptops, on the other hand, are a different story. I wish I could tell a customer outright, but you would be stupid not to buy the service plan on a notebook. This is the perfect example. Notebook parts are so expensive and hard to come by...you can't just walk in to a store, buy a new laptop harddrive (usually), and install it yourself...you gotta have a deathwish to do something like that. Factor in the costs of labor, you're in over your head. I know our service plans cover the battery up to 2 times a year...you're talking a $100 to $250 battery. That in itself covers the cost of the plan, for a single battery which is guaranteed to fail. Plus, if we can't fix it, we replace it...if we mess something up, we replace it.

Unfortunately, people do buy laptops and don't get the extended service plan. It's unfortunate because they're literally up the creek if it fails. They don't seem to understand, regardless of what I tell them, how risky it is to deal with a notebook. I'd give my left leg before I'd have to deal with over the phone tech support or customer service on an issue like this. Granted, people might get gyped or get bad service from an extended service plan; that's the way the world works. But you know, you have options. You can usually complain to the higher ups in the company to have something done about it. You have the facts with you there in black and white in the pamphlet...it's almost a contract...if the company breaches it, you're entitled to fight it. So please, before you tell your friends that "extended service plans are crap, don't buy them," make sure you explain to them the costs and risks they'd be incurring by not going with one, and how much money they'll be wasting in the end. I'd love to hear what others think on this subject matter.

  7. The next .com bust? on Digital Music Stores Reviewed · · Score: 3, Interesting

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but everyone and their brother is setting up their own freakin' online music store. If they all offer nearly the same exact content in the same exact form, why should I go with one over another? The online music market is still in its infant form, and it's already becoming saturated with too many stores. Coke setting up their own music store? What the hell?!

I find it laughable that people would actually spend $1 to buy a song. That's insane. For a full CD, you're almost talking $15...for songs I can only listen to on my computer...in a lousy format...and I don't get any case, media, or art with it. Thank you, I'd rather pay the $13 and take my music wherever I want to. Does anyone else find it shocking that these stores are actually able to stay afloat?

Let's give it a year. I'd love to see an "online music store" year in review next December. Who will stand and who will fall?

I got myself a LiteOn LDW-411S at Best Buy for $80 after mail in rebates. After reading a few reviews it seemed like a solid drive. The nicest thing about this one is that it does 40X CD-R, which most others only do 24X. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lot more of these drives under $100 before and after the holidays.

Someone made a point about the cost of the media. This is very true; it's still rather expensive. However, that's mostly on the retail level. If you take a look around online, you sould be able to find really good media for $1 a piece or slightly more. Ritek is one of the brands that's hailed as highly compatible and overall very good, and you can get a spindle of 50 from newegg for about $55. Not bad!

  11. One of the biggest mistakes in TV history, fixed? on Fox Considering a Return of "Family Guy" · · Score: 1

Canceling the Family Guy has to be one of the biggest mistakes in TV history. At the same time, placing it at 8PM on Thursdays up against *FRIENDS* of all shows (which happens to be the #1 rated show as far as viewers go) has to be another one of the biggest mistakes. Even then, it clocked in about 5 million viewers, which is about enough to keep it going, as some other shows FOX kept around had those sort of ratings (I mean come on, 5 million when you're against Friends' 22 million ain't bad).

Family Guy is, without a doubt, one of the best animated comedies (one of the best comedies, period) that has ever graced television. It is consistently funny, and has a unique style of humor that can't be found in any other show. I happen to work at a video rental store, and whenever we play a Family Guy DVD, most people comment on how great the show is. The majority of those people also have never even seen and/or heard of the show until it came to Cartoon Network. Go figure. I would be extatic if Family Guy came back with new episodes.

Chalk this up as too little to offer, too much to pay, and too late on the technology. From what I understand, the quality won't be near DVD. $2.39-$3.99 per movie for 24 hours PLUS a monthly fee is *WAY* overpriced. And this is coming from Disney! What a horrible pair.

Why a horrible pair, you ask? I'm not a parent myself, but I'm very aware that Disney is like crack for children. Try telling them "you can only watch this for one day" and you'll never hear the end of it. Kids want to watch the movie over, and over, and over, and over, and over, ad nauseum. This will never work! That's why Disney movies sell so well, because the parents have to be hardasses to rent the movie for a day and cut the kids off cold turkey.

I also work at a video store, where our new releases are $3.90 for 3 days (including tax), and all of the older childrens' movies are free the first day, $0.49 each additional day. Pay per view pricing, while only a one-time view (unless you're sneaky/sleezy enough to video tape it), is around that price (and no monthy fee besides your cable bill), and now at least Comcast is offering "on demand," where it's like PPV + DVR features of ff, rw, pause, play and stop, and you can watch it for as much as you want for 24 hours, still around the same cost. I'd love to see where this thing goes.
