  1. Re:Ouch! on Malicious Web Pages Can Install Dashboard Widgets · · Score: 1

The widget in question is packaged in a ZIP archive, which is why it is autorun. I don't actually think you can download a Widget without it being in some sort of archive, because a .wdgt file is actually a folder.

  2. Re:Serves you right on Malicious Web Pages Can Install Dashboard Widgets · · Score: 4, Informative

No, it's Safari categorising a ZIP archive as safe. To quote Safari:

"Safe" files include movies, pictures, sounds, PDF and text documents, and disk images and other archives.

The ZIP archive extracts automatically, and just happens to place the file in ~/Library/Widgets/. Dashboard runs the Widget from there.

You're right, it's not safe. I think the solution to this should be to first of all disable the whole opening safe files functionality by default. The second should be to declassify archive files as 'safe' (with the exception of disk images), because it makes it easy to write files in this way.

Personally I've set administrator priveledges on my ~/Library/Widgets/ folder so that I now need to enter a password to write to it.

There's a lot of talk of 'choice' going about in this thread. The general consensus is that choice is what Linux is all about. As such, I would like to be able to choose to use commercial software in a Linux environment, as I please. The problem is that, because of the (perceived) low Linux user base, a lot of commercial software just doesn't make it to Linux because there's very little return on investment. And don't say 'open source alternatives'. That's not choice.

I'll be interested to see what happens in ~2012 when the analogue signal gets turned off. In theory, at this point, ordinary televisions and video recorders would no longer come under the licence, only digital receivers. Thing is, it's not just the 'poor' that are in need of low cost housing. Consider the case down in London - property prices are so skyhigh that special provisions have to be made for public service workers. The government's making some progress towards building low-cost conventional housing, but they're up against loss of greenbelt space, plus the fact that less and less space is available because of the increased risk of flooding. Damn global warming.

Of course, the cardboard house would be entirely unsuitable if it has to be powered by solar power, which will never ever work in the UK. Fit it with a wind turbine and let's see what happens.

Personally I'd like to see Skara Brae style housing trialled, if just for fun. It'd be cool to test their resistence to landslides at least.
