When they first make a chip, the product yield sucks. As they refine their methods, it goes up. How old is P4 technology? At least a few years I think, and that has given them plenty of time to get decent yields. Also take into account how little the CPU market has changed in power compared to previous years (My AMD processor is only a little cheaper then it was 3 years ago when it was new), and how they haven't really had need to bump the speed too much (Vista will probably change that). I recall hearing 3/4 good chips was supposed to be a decent yield (not all the chips that are made work). And these numbers are also including Celerons, most of which sell for under $80 retail (newegg). Considering how well budget WalMart systems sell, It would be no surprise if they accounted for at least half of their sales.
I am a CS person, and know very little about Web design, so this post may be somewhat unknowlegable. But I remember back 3 years ago doing some stuff w/ DHTML for a class. It seemed quick, simple, useful, yet DHTML was something I hardly ever saw (and still hardly every see) anywhere. Although not as flashy as flash-based interfaces (no pun intended), it seemed to work well on even fairly weak systems. Does this still hold true nowadays with so many web pages going with flash that sometimes maxes out my Athlon-XP 2500+ system?
Now If I actually want a legit version of a halfway decent version of Windows (like XP Pro compared to XP Home), I'll probably have to pay a rediculiously high price like $500 ala MS Office Pricing for the "Ultimate" edition.
I remember back when IGN was owned by Imagine Media, makers of PC Gamer, PC Accelerator, and various other magazines. Back in 96 or so when the n64 section had the colored metal/flying/particle boxes from Mario 64, and I recall Toad for some reason....They were good. No constant Ads, a lot of content (much more then even Gamespot as I recall). But then Snowball bought them... Interface changed, and it eventually became nothing more then a source for more revenue to them judging by the massive number of ads you are now bombarded with, crappy reviews, and lack of gaming news other then around E3 time and big news. It was great back then... Now it sucks..... I hope News Corp can undo the damage that has been done.... There, I've wanted to get that off my chest for a while......
True. It's not called the MX 700 (because it is of course a different model), but in looks and features, I'm pretty sure it's just like the MX 700 aside from BlueTooth. A BlueTooth version of the MX 1000 is what I'm waiting for. Or maybe the one featured in this article if it works with things other then Windows with the indicated features.
I've had the MX 700 for years and I've loved it. I recently got an iBook w/ built in BlueTooth support, and I'd like to upgrade to the latest in the MX line in the process of getting a BlueTooth mouse. Now why the hell isn't there a newer BlueTooth model other then the old MX 700 copy? I've only been waiting less then a month. I'm sure many other readers waiting longer must be quite a bit more irritated.
I got an A7N8X-Deluxe w/ it built into it. It did the job pretty well. I needed it so that I could hook it up to a home theatre receiver that only supported Dolby Digital and Stereo AUX input (Crappy MidiLand S 8200, I ditched it now for a Creative S750). Linux support was kinda iffie..... But seemed to work pretty well even then with the proper settings.
The reason that studio existed was for Myst. Now that the Myst series has ended, the closed. I'm greatful that they made sure to finish up the series (I don't think it was selling so great, so I'm surprised they were able to finish it). I read the Myst books too. Good reading.
Last I knew, PDA sales were at an all time low compared to recent years more or less due to cell phones dupicating most of their functions. It seems wrong that something that has been said to be near the end of its lifespan is considered the "next big security risk".
I've thought for years they should have been doing this for series that didn't have a bad first episode. Free DVDs in anime magazines were a good way to give readers a taste of something new without commiting. Now this gets rid of manufacturing costs, and promotes their anime. Now they just have to hope it doesn't backfire, and cause people not interested in torrents to give it a try, and then realize they can get much much more from torrents if they really want it....
I finally broke down and got an iBook. No more looking for OS X on x86 only to find "gnanananana....." or tubgirl..... I recommend it to others who want OS X. You won't be sorry.
I am not sure sure about them offering iTunes through a Google interface with how protective Apple is with their intellectual copyrights and like of control. I'm thinking maybe it would tie into Google's ad system somehow, and point you to iTunes when you search for a song. And perhaps a means to search through the iTunes music store through google. The idea of Apple allowing iTunes music to be sold any way other then though the iTunes software is highly unlikely.
I do for one. Although HL2's scenery may not have been quite on par with Doom 3 (not to mention Doom 3's excellent lighting system), as another reader stated, it's facial animations were unparalleled. It also is compatible with Direct X 7, and will run on pretty old machines (although not as pretty). I think that's the real kicker, that it can look that good, but still maintain good compatibility with old hardware if it comes down to it.
I'm well aware that most kids would do violent acts, and agree that games aren't the main cause of violence (If it was that bad, there would be more then 2 or 3 stories about GTA inspired acts, and I'm sure the people that commited them would have done something similar if they had never even played a video game). But from what I've seen, at least when they are going through HS and other chaotic times, a lot of kids aren't really all that close with their parents, so it would be difficult for the parents to make a good judgement most of the time. It's no different when a parent trusting their kid not to do drugs or something similar they would deem as wrong. Sometimes they are right. Sometimes they are wrong. I know a lot of people that don't do drugs, but still see a disturbing number that do. (BTW, I don't care to start a pro/con drug argument, it's just an example). Thankfully most aren't going to be weaned into going on a killing spree from a game though.
"My kid is better then other kids, he can tell right from wrong, legal from illegal, fantasy from reality, and will never do anything to harm someone" is what probably 90% of parents think. and the other 10% (at least from what I've seen) mostly probably follow them more closely because of much younger siblings. I had a friend in HS that couldn't play violent games because his younger brother would get into them. I'm guessing that as games get more realistic with PS3 and beyond, parents may get the idea, or game violence will no longer strive to be realistic....
I agree. After installing it, you feel a lot more comfortable tinkering around with it, especially once you realize it would be quite difficult to break it so it would be un-fixable. Although all distributions are open and can be tinkered with, Gentoo practically leaves it's doors open inviting you to do so (su access only of course).
Guess it shows I didn't read the article. I assumed they were just trying to get out of having to pay disability or something by claiming it would have happened anyways (which I wouldn't agree with really, and don't see working for CT). A Gattica-type scenario sounds pointless (a movie, I know, so pointless is a given), since society can weed out those of less ability on it's own (not including the still common class system probably causing some brilliant minds to rot due to low income/class, and people that cheat/lie there way up the corporate ladder).
I didn't read the article, but it sounds like it would be ok with permission possibly. It's no different then health screenings done by insurance agencies sometimes for health insurance.
I'll have to give it a try when I get my shiny new *Book soon. I'm just waiting for commercialization of MythTV. If console makers licensed it, It could probably become extremely popular, and us Geeks wuold be payed to set up Myth servers....
Agreed. This isn't the day of the internet being a research tool and unknown to the public. This site's popularity is proof that 99% of activity done on the internet has little educational value. It's typically "Hmmm, I should probably do a little research now for my report....", when it should be "Hmmm... I think I'll take a break now and then continue my schoolwork". At least I think that's the typical attitude in the US.
Wow.... I'm not sure if that deserves to be modded up or down....

Aftermath? You mean Pyst, the island of Myst after millions of players have ruined it? "If your pissed with Myst, play Pyst".

Might be possible if they can beat the 50 yen per album price Apple was doing as their initial "promotion".

Very well Stated. If you have put enough time into it, aside from not getting payed, how is it all that different then some sort of sports career?

Simple. Get out of this computer industry recession and give them a job!
