And if running on the microsoft mapping software, the sharks could quite possibly be swimming from norway via newcastle then back to norway before taking chase....
1. Go to MSN Maps & Directions(http://mappoint.msn.com/DirectionsFind. aspx)
2. In the Start section, select "Norway" from the listbox and enter "Haugesund" into the City field
3. In the End section, select "Norway" from the listbox and enter "Trondheim" into the City field
4. Click on "Get Directions"
5. Laugh very hard at the result.
Also try changing from "shortest" to "quickest"
It seems like quite a cool tool to me, although it is pretty random what appears on the little "chips" (just whatever google puts in the "in the news" sidebar) and you dont really know what chip has what story on it, although that is part of the idea I guess.
Does it actually have anything stopping you from doing all that? If they are just MP3s then surely you can play them in any computer you want....??
How exactly do you "register" a computer with them anyway?
Presumably they are not MP3s and require a proprietry player to read them?!
The article mentions that the work on the Open XML standard was complete and their website shows that this standard will be used in the 'Business Colloboration Model'....so where is the problem? The site doesn't mention Windows or Windows-based systems anywhere, nor does it mention Microsoft. With IBM so heavily supporting *nix based systems, I doubt MS can wriggle their way into making the standards supported only on their platform, otherwise it's not really a standard....
I hate to say this, but actually, I use photoshop on SuSE Linux 9, without ANY problems. Okay, it's only 7.01 (CS isn't supported yet), but take a look - www.codeweavers.com
Oh and I can run office too...but I haven't found a need to so far...
I am running Flash MX as we speak, and it seems to start up okay. I haven't really used it to such an extreme that it might crash- what problems were you having? The fonts display better now I have installed the true-type fonts from YOU.
I'm not running the latest version of crossover yet, but the previous version 2.0.1 (?)
A friend of mine has two Dell laptops of similar speed to that. He doesn't have any problems running Linux. He runs SuSE 8.2 I think with windowmaker as the GUI.
I am not sure about that. Firewire WAS a mac thing. It works pretty much 99% of the time, but has problems with hotplug - it is hot pluggable but not hot unpluggable..you have to type a load of commands before you can unplug the PC card and if you unplug the firewire cord then try and plug it back in, it doesn't always work. I have to turn off everything, unplug everything including my laptop battery then plug it all back in again and it works again.
I have a Sony DVD Writer in a Formac firewire case (not orig combination) and I have had no problems with the drive itself. You can download cdrecord-PRODVD which works pretty much the same as cdrecord. K3b pops up when I put a blank DVD in (kind of it isn't it?) so I can burn the DVD very easily from an.iso image or select my own data. I checked that this drive worked first here: cdrecord site . There is also DVDR tools which I haven't used. Both are free though.
I do however have occasional problems with firewire, but under SuSE 9.0 it's not stable yet.
I am planning on building my own arcade machine over christmas. Me and my girlfriend are going to slave away in the garage whilst it's freezing cold outside, cutting, sawing and glueing. In the end we should have a cabinet to be proud of!
I already have retro joysticks, buttons and my MAME linux box and monitor:-)
I know when I am shutting down my computer from a command prompt, it pops up saying the computer is being shut down in KDE. Obviously I know this because it's my computer, but don't you get a similar message when you shutdown your server? I am sure you can delay the shutdown for 30 seconds or so to allow users to unmount.
I remember at our university, the 'server' when down on our solaris machines, and everything froze, but then re-started again in a couple of minutes, without problems. People booted into Windows got blue screens....
Eddie Izzard made a comment about pears: " And pears can fuck off too. 'Cause they're gorgeous little beasts but they're ripe for a half an hour...and you're never there!"
SuSE give you free updates as far as I know...and have done since 8.0.
I've been using SuSE since 8.0 and you simply run the YaST wizard, it downloads the updates you want and installs them (security patches, updates to programs, kernel updates) without any fuss.
the days when they used those nice little reliable computers called BBC Micros! They had one in the corner of each classroom and they were wonderful machines. We used to waste hours typing in listings from books to play pointless games. I'm afraid if I hadn't started with BBC Micros, I probably wouldn't be so blatantly addicted to the internet as I am now. In primary school I don't think we used them very much though, from what I can remember. I know they did by the time I left the school, because I really wanted their digitizer pad!
Since they 'upgraded' to a load of Windows computers, I didn't go into the computer room again, it just wasn't the same.
I found out this when I was working over the summer. Your mobile can still be tracked even though it's switched off. The only way to ensure it is not tracked is to physically take the battery out of it. This can be proved by listening to the interference caused by the phone when it's off and near a radio/stereo for example.
"During Gates' address, a Microsoft staffer gave a demonstration of Longhorn, highlighting among other features the "sidebar," an area on the right side of the screen capable of dynamically displaying messaging lists, stock quotes, news feeds, times and pictures."
Can't you do that with kappdoc....???
I'd like to see some screenshots of this 'new interface'.
The article rambles on a lot, but doesn't actually tell you anything. And..well.. I've never really tried it, but is Outlook that amazing:-/
Possibly something like that. I don't know, really, but I doubt microsoft will be able to force us to run windows. Numberous people run dual boot and will simply avoid a windows-only BIOS, I think. Trouble is, I don't expect the retailers will make it clear whether it has been asymalated my microsoft or not.
I was *just about* to post about this:-D
I am actually planning on getting linux BIOS running on my old box, so I can do stuff like boot off CD which my standard BIOS won't support.
I've never had any problems when changing a video card under linux. Under Windows I get all sorts of messes (98). If X windows crashes (which it does sometimes), it's not the whole system, it is possible to restart X with a few keypresses or a couple of commands. I think I have had linux crash maybe 3 or 4 times in the past year when I've been using it solidly, and that was because of things like popping in and out PC cards which is not supported with the firewire protocol or not installing my USB devices properly (my laptop is dodgy).
I haven't had windows crash on reading mail under 98, but on XP it did it all the time. Eurora didn't work properly under XP and crashed frequently (maybe it's a conspiracy!). That is mainly why I changed over.
I'm not saying that linux is perfect, but normally when something might not work, at least you are told i.e. the drivers are experimental. At the moment, everything appears to be working 100%, abeit not as 'easy' as windows to get everything working, when it is working, it doesn't just randomly give up.
I wish I had kept my 'certificate of authenticity' from MS, so I could have sent the license back saying I didn't agree with it, but I'd used it by then anyway. I doubt I would get anything back from them!

You know there IS a client for Linux users for yahoo messenger. If you got to messenger.yahoo.com you will see it ;)

I know flash MX runs fine with crossover office product. Although, it's not official, I've had no problems. Photoshop 7 also works like a dream.
And then when a major security hole is found in Windows 98, nobody cares...

This HAS to be the best. It doesn't mention in the article, but I am sure I read these were linux powered PCs!

Rememeber that these are the same people who run .src.exe or .pif.exe files on their computers from emails on outlook........

It's more likely that it will boot from the BIOS chip, thus forcing the user to use a windows operating system or patch the BIOS (see above)
