    Quickly:

I agree with most of what you said, but regarding the job creating you mention it's worth noting that those are, all of them, service jobs.

Service jobs are not really beneficial for building a local economy because they don't create wealth, they feed off of it. If there is no wealth creation in the form of manufacturing, programming for local businesses, agriculture and cetera, their economy will remain dependent upon foreign companies who could destroy the foundation by simply picking up and moving elsewhere.

Not to mention the fact that service jobs usually suck for the person performing them.

I would have loved to get him one of these, because he had to change tunings so often that the audience would get bored in between songs. You misunderstand me. I'm not saying that Linux==GPL, because clearly it isn't. Software cannot be the license it is released under.

What I'm saying is that SCO may actually realize that the GPL IS valid, and that to save their asses in the coming copyright lawsuit they are getting on record saying that they understand the GPL to be in disagreement with copyright law and thus non-binding (note: even though they understand to the contrary). This way, when in court they have plausible deniability against WILLFUL infringement.

It is my understanding that copyright must be willfully infringed in order to be punishable. Mistakes can be made so long as after the mistake is brought to the infringers attention, they correct their error.

The book didn't emphasis it at all, and the part about Elrond opposing the union ... grrr.

Um, did you read the same books I did? It's been a while since I last read the trilogy, but I remember the romance between Arwen and Aragorn as quite obvious and relevent, as well as the conflict caused by Eowyn's attraction to Aragorn (and vice versa) and the fact that Elrond objected to the union because it would force Arwen to sacrifice her immortality for a life with a mortal man (she's only half-elven, remember? Ok, I'm not saying it makes a lot of sense, but thats the way I remember it working. Or maybe it was that she would end up staying behind in ME rather than travelling with the rest of the elves...anyone want to refresh my memory?)

Bottom line is that Elrond wasn't thrilled that he would lose his daughter to a mortal (however the details worked out), even if it was Aragorn.

That's cool, I hadn't even considered the trouble a dyslexic would have with a text based interface.

I was thinking as a musician (which some might consier to be another result of mis-wiring in the brain :-) that we are generally trying to minimize the amount of friction the interface contributes to the task of controlling the computer as an instrumnt. I believe this is one of the reasons it has taken so long for them to catch on in music in general, and are still rarely used in performance for anything other than playback (i.e. nothing interactive). This will make manipulation faster and more natural, and provide a better visual representation of the hierarchical structure inherent in most synthesis and effects algorithms.

This is definitely a huge step in the right direction; now if only it will go into some kind of production (or I find time to research and build on myself).

Hmmmm, I've read of Muslim leaders denouncing terrorist attacks of all kinds. Just because some muslims are misguided doesn't mean all muslims misguided, just like the existence of christian bigots like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson doesn't mean all christians are bigots.

I'd like to see some proof as to your source for the above quote also. Not saying it doesn't exist, but it sounds a bit too sensationalized to be believed. Even though there is/are a passage(s?) in the bible instructing parents to stone misbehaving children, I haven't heard of many children dying by stoning, yet this is still paraded around by anti-christian bigots as proof of the hypocrisy of christianity.

Maybe you should work on finding some perspective and try not to abstract the actions of certain members of a group (e.g. terrorists) to apply to all the members of another group (e.g. muslims) to which the first also happen to belong.

  22. Re:Autotune is THE DEVIL! on Perfect Pitch for Those Without It · · Score: 1

I can detect an autotune-processed track within seconds of hearing it, due to the utter piano-like lack of pitch sensitivity and expression.

You're either delusional or listening to very poorly engineered music. Have you ever used Auto-Tuner? It allows you to maintain vibrato, scoops, and whatever other pitch variations are recorded, while only adjusting the frequency average to be around the desired pitch, and with whatever precision one would like.

Furthermore, a really competent engineer won't lower themselves to letting auto-tune do it for them. They will bust out a sine wave and tune it by ear, to what they feel compliments the music best.

The fact that there is no sensitivity or expression in most pop music is because, well, there isn't. Most performers, as has been pointed out repeatedly, lack any real skill or talent (other than maybe dancing).
