Vint said it would be "suicide" for a registry to do it, because there'd be the 6-month notice period to raise prices and the ability for registrants to renew for up to 10 years at "old prices", that supposedly "protects" registrants. Personally, as a business, my time horizon is a lot longer than 10 years

If you think video games are engrossing now, just wait: PlayStation maker Sony Corp. has been granted a patent for beaming sensory information directly into the brain.

The technique could one day be used to create video games in which you can smell, taste, and touch, or to help people who are blind or deaf.

The U.S. patent, granted to Sony researcher Thomas Dawson, describes a technique for aiming ultrasonic pulses at specific areas of the brain to induce "sensory experiences" such as smells, sounds and images.

"The pulsed ultrasonic signal alters the neural timing in the cortex," the patent states. "No invasive surgery is needed to assist a person, such as a blind person, to view live and/or recorded images or hear sounds."

According to New Scientist magazine, the first to report on the patent, Sony's technique could be an improvement over an existing non-surgical method known as transcranial magnetic stimulation. This activates nerves using rapidly changing magnetic fields, but cannot be focused on small groups of brain cells.

Niels Birbaumer, a neuroscientist at the University of Tuebingen in Germany, told New Scientist he had looked at the Sony patent and "found it plausible." Birbaumer himself has developed a device that enables disabled people to communicate by reading their brain waves.

A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

To be honest, a lot of what is described is available in Japan already. 17-button toilets are not too uncommon in decent hotels there, and I have seen the future and want one of their seats in my house. Such glorious electronic features include:
    - Bidet with adjustable pressure, temperature, etc
    - Noise maker which plays background noise so people cannot hear you making bodily noise (not so important but if you have shy relatives over and have a small house it can be beneficial)
    - Automatic seat heater (although this sounds pointless if you live somewhere with harsh winters and bad heating, the cold toilet seat in the morning is pretty horrible... this is the greatest invention since sliced bread I think :), although it does feel like the toilet has just been used by a really fat person at first so takes some getting used to)
    - Builtin extractor fan to remove bad smells instantly

In addition to all this, some outlandish/development level toilets are now performing analysis of your output to determine medical problems (sugar levels, etc).

Thankfully I think the xbox 360 version will take care of #2. Though now I cant help but imagine trash-talking catan players which would be a bit odd. Still, adds to the temptation to get an xbox 360.

Which is why I have 60 second rsyncs with a server in my parents house as well as the server in my own house. The server room is locked when I am away so someone would have to sever the (underground) communications lines coming into my house before breaking in, then they would need to break down the door/lock to the server room, then destroy/take the 9 hard drives in the correct machine. If I was more paranoid than I am I could rig it up to use my neighbour's wireless Internet connection as a backup connection for the rsync. Servers are UPSed but the cameras are not, so cutting the (underground) power would get the same results (unless I stuck batteries on the cameras too). Should be enough to catch a common criminal in the act and give me enough time through the alerts system to call the police or my neighbours.
