  3. Babel-17 on One, Two, Many - Language Shapes Thought · · Score: 5, Interesting

Samuel Delaney's classic SF book "Babel-17" explored how language shapes behavior. A clandenstine group who wanted assassins who wouldn't question what they were doing created an artificial language and raised children in it. The language had no word for "I" or "no". It was all commands, such as "You will do this." They had no way of saying "No, I won't.", because the concept didn't exist in the language. I recently re-read it after many years and it's still an incredible read.

Otherwise, it makes sense to standardize on a browswer layout format -- something not possible if NS gains market share, since it's incompatible with IE's HTML/XHTML requirements. Uhhh...I guess I was under the mistaken impression that browsers were supposed to conform to WWW standards, instead of the code having to conform to a specific company's requirements. Silly me...!!!

That's not even the full extent of his habit. He also spends countless additional hours using his phone's Internet connection to check sports scores, download new ringtones (at a buck apiece) and send short messages to his friends' phones, even in the middle of class. "I know the touch-tone pad on the phone better than I know a keyboard," he says. "I'm a phone guy." Just guessing here, but...Mr. Rappoports GPA is probably about 0.6 and he'll be text-messaging his friends during his shift at MacDonald's this time next year...

Go ahead and flame me, but this is everything that is wrong with capitalism as currently being practiced in this country. Reminds me of an old "Wizard of ID" cartoon.
