    having played with both old and new hardware...i would say the old stuff is higher quality, might be that all my "old" is server grade, and all the new stuff is consumer grade. i have 350MB scsi drives that work beutifuly. just my $0.02......

    see theres this funny thing about the group I play with i guess..... of the 6 PC's 3 are women, and 3 are men.... we just got done with a mini campain set in that same world, i was a black dragon and had a pet nymph that was yes a PC and another member of the group....so i guess my groups is just weird

    my install on my P100 with 192MB ram feels just fine, just to clarify i usually only have 2-4MB free and i'm running mysql, apache, nfs, smbd, ssd and a few other things.... i also do not have X installed :-) probably why it feels fine :-D

    yes but what if i already have a dual 939 system can i upgrade to a 4way system but updating my bios? yes i know this would be over kill for just about everything(currently) but it would allow expansion/upgrades to be very easy/cheeper, go buy a dual core processor, update bios, install new dual core chip, sell old one on e-bay, and have a 3 way box, repeat for the other when you need/want to. i hope someone thinks of this update/upgrade scheme so that i can use it, it would almost be like buying a 4way board and only putting 1 chip in it now.

    Back in highschool they used to have a dog come in and sniff the entire parking lot for anything... not just select cars but a good portion of the parking lot. How is that any different? and yes there would be people that had problems everytime, and this happened about 2 times a semester.

    Considering that i'm 19 years old and remeber using a rotery phone untill i was 10-12 or so I must be old. anyways I also remember my family getting a CD player. No 8 tracks but i know what they are. but vinal and tapes are fairly common....
    anyways it seems that the definition of old might be a little bit off
    P.S. I also played on atari 800's and 2600's.

    wow you have a large battery.... i can get 3 hours out of mine and it's only 12.496 volts and 1900 mAh, i hope you get 6 hours out of that thing.... :-) granted i have a fujitsu p2110, with *gasp* a transmeta proc in it......yes a real one...

    there is only on problem as far as i can tell with NFS.. If i don't get a static IP and the DNS records take 5min to 2 days to update themselfs, the laptop does not get correct permissions..... but with smb and the udi/password combo it makes that easier in some ways

    Yes i have... i have some external kernel drivers i need. I use the Hostap drivers. The drivers for prism2 based wireless cards... it's not that big of a deal(make && make install i think, i just emerge hostap-driver.)

    Not to defend "sony"(i think the whole idea of all of this is bull$hit), but that method only works if "walmart" pays for that "cd" from "sony" before they sell it and not after......

    Portage is the main act. The side show is that it is compiled exactly how you want. As others have said, if you want something like Gaim, it's baiscly, emerge --ask -v gaim, it will ask you if you want to install gaim, and all of the dependancies. other than that, it's a very very striped down install, and very easy to keep up to date.

    Not to be overly hostile... but have you looked thru the prefs and noticed that you can tell it not to reconnect if the connection drops. That would have solved your problem. Also it's not Gaim's fault that they have to hack, the constantly changing, MSN protocol, go yell at Micro$hit for that. Tell them to make the protocal an open API. I will agree that the file manager needs some work. The mandatory connect window that you were complaining about works fine in linux, at least for me, but I run IceWM and have it set not to strict focus undermouse and not to raise windows unless I move my mouse into them. So again a problem with something other than Gaim.

    If you want something simple, fast and clean, try out iceWM. You may have to download a new theme. Use it as a desktop, and notice that you can login in about a 1/3 of the time of gnome. I used to use gnome. What made me switch was the fact that I could not set the desktops up in a 2x2 square and have them behave that way, I could in KDE. I'm over that now and use iceWM. If they made the login time faster, and made gnome use less resources then I would move back to it(probably), until then I'll keep using iceWM. and yes i've tried KDE, gnome, XFCE, and a few others....

    Accelerator for narrowband connections. Predict which pages the user is more likely to visit next, and start loading them as the user still reads the previous page

    not to naysay.... but i'm on a 28k modem on a good day(i've seen 16k, i use the "simple" slashdot), with multiple computers on the network and if they all had this and 3 tabs open and then loaded 3 sites per tab that would 9 pages per box, now to top that off how bout i try doing my "bash# emerge rsync" and be downloading the new kernel at the same time. i would watch most of the pages get a "connection timed out" if it resolves at all. yes I for one welcome my new bandwidth sucking overlords.

    the fastest box that i "own"(really i'm renting it from nmu) is a 1.7ghz pentium m and the slowest was a 100mhz pentium with 128MB or ram.... so yes i know hat it's like and i used that box untill about 2 years ago as my desktop. and now my primary box is a 876mhz transmeta. now the pentium is my server box with a 10mbit card. it's my print/web/nfs/smb/ftp/gentoo distfiles mirror/etc my web site was being served by it for a while. now that i'm back on 26.4 dial-up i don't have a web page... so yeah i know about old hardware even though i'm only 18
