It's funny, but I am the manager of an ISP and after the whole MyDoom DoSS stuff, me network resolves http://www.sco.com as 127.0.0.1, just in case someone got infected.
Mod this: Offtopic and Informative
actually rathergood has been around alot longer than the Quiznos commercial.. It is cool to see the stuff made it to TV...
perhaps (IANAP) it is because the software update was released on March 18th, and the worm was released on March 19th. Sounds like it was hurried to avoid losing any ground to people who (suprisingly) update their software based on security exploits...
So your just doing your part now to waste our resources by devouring all those eggs and oninons for nothing, eh?
I personally one day envision labels on food at the grocery store: "1.2 killawats per serving, (fine prints: exceeding 10 killawats may induce scary explosive disharge,..."
1.) Post Slashdot article re: Windows vs. Linux
2.) ????????
3.) CHAOS!
really though (cough* chevy... cough* ford) I use every tool available to get my goals accomplished.
I agree.. although I love getting my communications for free, and will always maintain a way to do that, i.e irc... a 1/5 a cent per email is not a big deal in my book, but millions(cost per email) would be a nice dent to spammers...
I have a suggestion for the idea though... how about making it free to send email to known contacts, or people you have allowed to send you email?
I fail to see what the combination of a RF sealed faraday cage and running WiFi outside of said cage would have any benefits or otherwise. I have been trying to sit here and figure out what you meant by putting an antinna (sic) outside of a sealed box. (Well, if you run a cable through a true faraday cage, it is becomes a big metal box). True cages are sealed and bonded. If you are referring to a mesh cage, than.. umm ok.
But still. Not trying to be rude, and maybe you were just being funny. In that case, sorry I missed the joke.
On another note, I have a friend who has built a neighborhood mini ISP with a cable connection and wifi equipment. It is a very cool way to eliminate the "Big Guys" from the equation, although in order to pay for the wireless equipment, you had better have some pretty cheap shared rates. I run a Wireless ISP and the going rates for solid, combination 18db antennas and WiFi/Ethernet converters is around $300.00 vs. $80.00 for a cable modem.
I am thinking in a historical sense here, so bare with me.
Us as a species in general have been pretty adaptive over the ages. We adapt to new enviroments through the plasticity of the body, we adapt to new problems through the complexity of our mind. There is a change now in the way our country outsources work to a place where it is cheaper.
Regardless of whether or not we like this, it is a business decision at best. I have seen companies make decisions like these on a daily basis, this is just in different context.
We could opt to fight for the return of the way things were done before, or we could adapt. Develop skill sets that make us innovative, and refresh the markets we currently work in.
Evolution is funny like that. The saying is only the strong survive. Time to see who's been limping along in the herd and cull it.
*note: authors opinion is not a reflection of Slashdot's, Computer Geeks, 90% of apes with egos, or pretty much anyone but himself*
Let's see... today I have:
1.) Been diagnosing a poorly designed motorola canopy shot;
2.) spent the first half of the day ordering software (and dealing with accountant/account crap) to upgrade the firmware on a tower that:
3.) died because of a bad amplifier, and now:
4.) it is a 150ft high doorstop, if only because in the process of uploading the firmware, the utility crashed (only works in windows) and it got corrupt firmware, which makes it useless, which:
5.) bites because due to the market area I work in,it appears all tower climbers around here are vastly afraid of heights or money, and last but not least:
6.) have a user associated with my WISP network that apparently clicked the olsentwinsandadonkey.pif file that came in their email, their computer is spamming the tower and breaking it, upsetting every other user on the tower....
Stressed? Um yeah. I provide the technology for other people's lives to be easier.
Don't mean to have a sandy vagina about it, its not always bad, I love the business I am in, and the tools I get to use, the stress just makes it a job.
Don't hate me for complaining, the question was asked and you just picked a good time for the post.
(and I still have time to post on slashdot.. priorities??)
What you wrote so bold and bright in html only shows your ingnorance. Here is a couple of points for you to consider.
802.11b is not true 11 mbps. It's more like 7. Go ahead, test it sometime.
G uses the exact same frequency as B, so range does not change. Might I suggest a nice wireless book with some pictures in it for you?
Last but not least, using the words "New Age" only makes you sound like an ass or a marketing representative.
Listen, buddy, I know somewhere inside you you feel as if because* of your superior knowledge to the rest of us humans you feel the urge to enlighten the rest of your fellow, yet inferior, peers, but do us a favor. Shut Up. I think the new age of bullying (you like that?) comes fom oppressed geeks with too much time on their hands.
Well... (cough* Beagle) I thnk the US has a different way of looking at what is more important in the long run. Smart bank cards, GSM in Europe beats US crdit/debit cards and cell phone standards.
I personally don't want my bank card to be any smarter, it serves it's purpose just fine. (sometimes it does it too well..) Cell phone standards? Motorola.. hmmm.. sounds familiar.. maybe you have heard of them... being pioneers and all in the industry.
Here is what the treasury department says you can do with photocopies of money. I have a firend who runs a group of businesses out here and makes fake money with his companies logo on it (yes.. cough* cheesy, but if you understood the mind of our tourists) and it falls within legal terms. This seems like it may actually prevent people from doing legal things, for instance with advertisments.
Photographic or other likenesses of other United States obligations and securities and foreign currencies are permissible for any non-fraudulent purpose, provided the items are reproduced in black and white and are less than three-quarters or greater than one-and-one-half times the size, in linear dimension, of any part of the original item being reproduced. Negatives and plates used in making the likenesses must be destroyed after their use for the purpose for which they were made. This policy permits the use of currency reproductions in commercial advertisements, provided they conform to the size and color restrictions.
Granted: It is illegal to drive over the speed limit, but do you see car manufacturers installing speed governors on their vehicles?
Hey that's pretty cool... all it needs now is a soccer ball on the gas cap and It would look quite normal in rush hour traffic next to the onlsaught of SUVs currently cruising the highway...
My names Slim Hades, and I work for a company who's lifespan is about out. It is from years of previous Network Engineers doing half-arsed things with Wi-Fi and basically turning a great WISP opportunity into a money pit. Sigh. Just when I found a career I like. Really, though, it's sad because as an employee of the WDA, it makes it hard to find pride in what you do when:
1.) You know in a year it won't even be around
2.) Every cool idea or new thing you think of is only good for your own personal satisfaction, and geeky braging rights, should you choose to exercise them.
It's nice to have a great enviroment to learn, but not when it's hostile.
to this article... Spam is the one word that gets any geek's blood boiling... It's like yelling "Atkins" an the all-you-can-eat buffet...
"Senior Managers who want to keep their jobs by avoiding a repeat of 2003 are funding enterprisewide personal firewall deployments. Now let's hope that they will be able to effectively manage them and still retain the ability to manage the PCs."
As long as these "Senior Managers" manage windows, job security is the one issue not present in 2004.
w00 h00 first post... I have to wonder if this is an attempt at making things better for them or us... Now I can get a blue screen before my O/S starts? sweeet.. eliminates any diagnostics
I am a net engineer, ergo I know how networks work or don't and are sercure or not. Does this mean I am a security risk myself? I can throw a brick through a windows just as well as I know how to pick locks, physically and literally. I choose not to be malicious, and thats the difference. (Besides, federal-pound-me-in-the-ass prison does not sound like the place you send postcards from, and too many people end up there for the wrong reasons.) Well.. my.02 worth, flaimbait me if you feel the need.
hee... so the Mandrake Fairy starts installing, happily humming along.. hello Processor... hello Ram,... hello CD player.. "POOF", your a doorstop
I use and like Mandrake.
Just think of all the fun we've had, though.
It's funny, but I am the manager of an ISP and after the whole MyDoom DoSS stuff, me network resolves http://www.sco.com as 127.0.0.1, just in case someone got infected.
Haven't removed that DNS entry yet.
^-^
Alot of why people do YYYY MM DD is when you are naming a file and want to have the files when arranged by name such as:
Timesheet20040322.txt
the next timesheet would fall in the same are but lower due to the date.

Maybe they should work out sending a dog successfully first.

the flux compression generator, or FCG, is a good choice
Marty! That's impossible! Unless... you can drop the bomb when the clock tower is struck at precisely twelve midnight going 60 mph...
ahhh.... "America - The Scared"
I personally choose to not be scared. It makes people more violent.
