Maybe, just maybe, this is "good enough", and they have no reason to put more money in because they have 5 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS with the current implimentation.

Business is about maximizing profit. Maybe they _think_ that this is the _best_ way to run the business. Perhaps they did the math and found they are at the peak of investment vs. return. If they put more money in, they don't linearly (or exponentially) get more subscribers, so they are happy... VERY HAPPY.

Gmail: Storage, yes, OKAY UI yes. The UI isn't that great, there are lots of bugs STILL, Sometimes I can't even access my mail, and others report the same problem. Yahoo Mail has always been there for me, just didnt' give me the massive free storage. It's easy to give out 2.5 gigabytes of free storage though when you DONT LET PEOPLE SIGN UP.

Google Video: I won't even give my own comments on this one, it's been raped by enough other people that its very ammiture I don't need to get into any detail.

Google Web Search: It is awsome, of course. Very fast, and very speedy, *but* it is technical heavy. Yahoo/MSN mix tech/non-tech. Ask Jeeves is way out in left field mainly returning non-technical results. I actually think Yahoo is the better all around web-results engine, but they bloat it down with heavy pages and its not as fast. This still is googles one and only bread and butter

Google Maps is great, but don't rely on them for directions AT ALL. I swear to god, I've gotten lost using their map directinos here in the bay area so many times. The last time ending up in the middle of no where surrounded by f*cking fields trying to get to a resturant for a lunch meeting, I switched back to reliable MAP QUEST (who btw have been updating their site to provide more "local" style searches and AJAX'ish interface enhancements). By the way, when Google got me completely lost, I was low on gas, my cell phone dead and not a house in sight. After driving around on fumes, so pissed off, I found a UPS truck and chased him down. When he pulled over for a delivery I jumped out and asked him for help. GO UPS! Heh.

Alot of Google's other products are low-profile and not used much relatively speaking, which brings me to the main point, I hope for the sake of the Google Share holders, that Google isn't going off on the deepend with the "throw a thousand darts and see what hits" approach. It's easy to get caught up in yourself, especially when your stock is soaring.

Then again, who knows, maybe Google will "get it right", and be the world power 5, 10, 20 years from now. Every department outside web-search @ google smells an awful like dot-com 2000/2001 to me.

It'll be interesting though to watch! :)

This is something a good router will take care of, but very few of them do, not even the customized Linksys routers, nor the linux routers like Smoothwall do BOTH of the required things.

All you need to do to get outstanding performance on an asymetric line is the following:

    [ON THE ROUTER]
    1. Prioritize TCP ACK Packets as #1 to always go upstream first to your connection
    2. Restrict upload rate by 2% - 5% of the actual upload rate of the connection

Do these three things, and enjoy a fast connection in both directions.

The reason your downloads choke when you upload, is because the TCP ACK packets that need to go UP to the site you are downloading from (to get the next chunk of your download) can't get out because your saturating your upload connection. By prioritizing these ACK packets, they go out first, and your download runs full speed, while your uploads fly as well.

The reason for #2, is that most DSL and Cable modems have a large buffer in them... If you saturate this buffer, then your router can't guarentee the TCP ACK packets go out first since other packets are sitting in your DSL/Cable modems buffers... This is very important to do #2.

There are more things you to can do to help, but they get more sophistated. If you are interested in managing asynchronous TCP connections, check out this document, which covers everything including the kitchen sink:

Believe it or not, most (> 99%) of all computer users in the entire world, don't buy hardware, they buy the operating system software.

You buy a Dell, HP or Gateway _because_ it is Windows. You buy an Mac because its the Mac operating system.

Less than 1% of all computer users in the world will buy a Dell computer, then put OSX on it. Less than 1% of all the computer users in the world will buy a Mac and put Windows on it.

IMHO (again) this only affects Apple in terms of CPU speed, price and availablity. It affects Apple's end customers in the same way.

A computer isn't a computer because the hardware thats inside it. People buy the complete package. Apple is Apple, Dell is Dell. Who cares what CPU it's using.

You have to "know" your environment the second even ONE little thing goes wrong, or else all hell breaks loose. You know how long it took me to find the damn "lspci" command? Sheesh, I was looking for an hour. I didn't even KNOW if Linux had this ability, after I realized it MIGHT, then I had to find the thing. Uhhh ... pci[enter] no... fuck it. Google where are you.

I've installed Windows on at least two dozen machines, sure sometimes there is a problem, but nothing like this guy is talking about.

There are some basic ideas and steps you need to know to fix "drivers" and such, once you know them its a snap. The same goes for linux.

My point is Windows is NOT more difficult or screwed up than linux, and vice versa. They are both pretty horrible, but personally I give WINDOWS the hands down on being slightly less horrible as far as install-experience.
